Stargate Atlantis will continue to a fifth season on SCI FI Channel, the network announced today.
SCI FI ordered 20 episodes for Season Five of the series, which despite lower "Live" ratings this year has maintained its status as one of the cable channel's most-watched original dramas.
"'Atlantis' truly came out from under the shadow of its sister series this year and proved that it's a hit in its own right," said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of original programming for SCI FI Channel.
"All of us at MGM are pleased to be extending the Stargate legacy with 20 new original episodes of Stargate Atlantis for our friends at SCI FI," MGM's Charles E. Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President Finance and Corporate Development, said. "Viewers the world over clamor for exciting new stories of space exploration, distant civilizations and the marvels of technology, all of which continue to be delivered by Stargate Atlantis."
The show will celebrate its 100th episode as the fifth season finale.
Other shows renewed include Eureka for a third season, according to Variety. The fate of Flash Gordon is still uncertain. A brand new series, titled Revolution, has also received the green light.

As it is, yeah. It would take a semi-permanent move over to Mongo and some goddamn rocket ships to save it.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:That was fast. Cheers.
I hope Flash Gordon gets canceled, though. Hard. What a total waste of a programming slot.
And I wanna know what that moon-sized space station is all about.

But is it being renewed bcuase its actually worth renewing? Or simply because they're not willing to give up the Stargate cashcow?
Atlantis has been diminishing in my opinon since they fucked over Ford. And the pointless killing of Beckett didn't help matters. Due to a lack of Sky, terrestial channels not wanting to touch Atlantis and too much laziness to 'aquire' it elsewhere, I've more or less simply ceased watching atlantis. Does Season 4 show an improvement over the last couple of Seasons?

I guess it does if you're a rabid Carter fan like me. But other than that... no, not really. The special effects are prettier and they obviously have more money. But it's getting pretty stale, and it just isn't quite Stargate without Anderson.Crazedwraith wrote:Does Season 4 show an improvement over the last couple of Seasons?

Beckett had to be removed for the show, they are being quiet about it but his removal wasn't pointless.Crazedwraith wrote:But is it being renewed bcuase its actually worth renewing? Or simply because they're not willing to give up the Stargate cashcow?

Problem with the actor. He's guess starring this season (flash back I believe) so it's not a case of a falling out or anything. But for some reason the actor requested, or decided it was best with the creators, to be killed off.Crazedwraith wrote:You mean because there was a problem with the actor? Or they wanted to a storyline, Beckett was incompatible with?

I would suppose he perceived SG as a dying show and just wanted to get off given the way their ratings are going and that SG-1 was canceled.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Colour me surprised... wait no, this was obvious from the beginning.
It is somesort of rule that series have to get to 5 seasons at least for some reason. I find it unlikely they would ditch SGA unless it really bombed heavily just like Star Trek.
I get the impression that the SG crew are starting to become over indulgent since they have managed to set records and generate a massive genre. SGA suffers from the age old attempts at trying to clone their previous success by maintaining the status quo which is blatantly obvious. Some of the stories are definetly beginning to show a lazy convienience and act of plot mentality.

Generally it's because a show has to have at least 100 episodes (which these days breaks down to five seasons of twenty episodes each) to enter off-network syndication. But SGA has already been in syndication since its first season, so it probably doesn't have anything to do with that (and I believe SG-1 itself might have entered syndication before hitting 100).PREDATOR490 wrote:It is somesort of rule that series have to get to 5 seasons at least for some reason.
Perhaps Sci Fi simply doesn't want to lose one of its few shows that people actually bother to watch. After Battlestar Galactica is gone for good next summer, and assuming they don't go ahead with the prequel Caprica spin-off, all they'll have for heavy hitters is more or less just Stargate Atlantis and Eureka.
I believe in a sign of Zeta.

The show's being losing quality for me since Season Three. Season One was good, Season Two was even better, but they seemed to reach a peak when Season Three hit. I don't know if it's the introduction of the Asurans, the continued inability to make Teyla and Ronon relevant as characters, or simply the over-use of familiar SG-1 stories, but I'm hoping SGA can raise itself out of the rut of the last season.
next summer? You haven't looked at their schedule.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:After Battlestar Galactica is gone for good next summer,
BSG Season 4 (Final season) 20 episodes
10 episodes starting February 2007

I think whoever invented 'half seasons' should be taken out into the alley and shot in the mouth.

Season Four of nBSG starts in early 2008, with a midseason break expected in April, and therefore should conclude sometime in late Summer 2008.

Oh, I was hoping they wouldn't do that; I was hoping that after making us wait 8 months, we'd get an uninterrupted final season. This is something that most series have seemed to pick up on. I remember this happening as far back as Voyager with the TV channels cutting off at the mid season hangers. It is extremely annoying to say the least when you have to wait several months just to see the next episode.
Unfortunatly, the SG team seems to have taken this to a whole new level with the genre. You will have dozens of filler episodes that are of little relevance with the only real action at these cliff hangers. Followed by them promptly pushing the reset button on everything.
SGA is getting rather bad for it because their cliffhangers are getting rather stupid to be frank with the act of plot mentality.
1) Get an Ancient warship - that gets blown up
2) Get a Wraith hive ship - that gets blown up
3) Introduce a ship full of Ancients - that die within minutes of being left alone
4) A "massive" Wraith threat is coming to Earth - that gets blown up before even leaving the galaxy.
SG-1 was decent since it had a more real aspect and the threats were actually THREATS. SGA was good in its first season because they were cut off from Earth so they were alone. Unfortunatly, Atlantis has fallen into a complete ditch due to the Ancient obsessed stories. Everything is because of the Ancients in this show and it makes them look like retards while the SGA crew have this 'awe' that seemingly makes Atlantis capable of doing anything because its built by the awesome Ancients.
One would expect them to be able to replicate even the smallest amount of technology out of Atlantis. Nevermind that in 3 years worth of living there they havent thought to try and copy files from Atlantis to send back to Earth or found any sort of materials on the construction of items.
