Electrically Charged Catalytic Converters

Post by Enola Straight »

Suppose you had a 3-way catalytic converter (reducing cat to split NOx into nitrogen and oxygen, oxidizing cat to completely combust hydrocarbons and CO into CO2). For the sake of this arguement the catalyzing monoliths are stainless steel instead of ceramic.

A probe is inserted into the exhaust stream upstream of the catcon to measure NOx, HCs, and CO in the raw, unprocessed exhaust.

Another probe downwind of the catcon measures the change in pollutant output, and this is the baseline.

Electrically insulate/isolate each monolith from the other AND the catcon casing, and apply a negative electrical charge tho the reducing cat upstream and a positive charge to the oxidizing cat downstream.

Would electrically charging the monoliths enhance catalytic conversion of exhaust pollutants?
