Super Smash Bros Brawl site goes live

Awesome, a heavy character that'll be able to fly! Finally, no more of the infamous fatness of Bowser. I like big doofy looking guys, and as a rabid Kirby fanatic, I think this is a fantastic choice. I was already sold before, and this is just increasingly good thinking. As much as I try to rip on Smash Brothers for being a sloppy fighting game, it's hands down one of the best party mash-up games I can think of. There's really something for everyone now, and it's looking slick.
And they haven't even announced all the old characters. You gotta wonder how many they'll have total.

He was never Eggman until Sonic Adventure. The instruction manuals for all prior games labeled him as "Dr. Robotnik". We even had a game called "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine".Vendetta wrote:He was always Eggman. Also, they could have in-jokes between him and Snake. I weep for thee, Sonic franchise.
Sega decided to change the story with Sonic Adventure. Remember, all the manuals stated that Sonic lived on the planet Mobius with his animal friends and Dr. Robotnik was the villain...in fact, there was a Sonic game for the Sega Saturn that used SatAM characters that got cancelled. When Sonic Adventure came along Sega decided, "Let's put Sonic on Earth with humans and change Robotnik to Eggman!"

Robotnik was always Eggman in Japan (just like Mobius was always Earth), and the change from Robotnik to Eggman for the release of Sonic Adventre in the West was effectively a retcon, kind of like when the western branches of Nintendo stopped using the name Princess Toadstool and started calling her Peach, though much more extensive.
If Robotnik will be in Brawl, he'll be called Eggman, because that's what Sega has always/now calls him.

"And besides, who cares if a monster destroys Australia?"
Though he was always Eggman in the Japenese versions, in the American versions I got the impression that Eggman was just a nickname that stuck really well. IIRC, in Sonic Adventure, he calls himself Robotnik once in the beginning and gets annoyed when Sonic calls him Eggman.
In Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, the words "Robotnik Empire" scroll across the bottom of the screen when he makes his "surrender to me or I blow up the world with the Death Star...er, ARK" threat.
That said, the name Robotnik hasn't shown once since then that I can recall, and if he winds up in Brawl he'll certainly be called Eggman. I doubt he'll be a playable character, though I think a 2-D version of him with his checkered wrecking ball would make a great assist trophy. And who knows, if they do use the old version of him, maybe they will call him Robotnik in the English version.

Robotnik is an example of the Westernized version of something being better.
This is fact, not conjecture.

I realize that he was always Eggman in Japan, but not so in the US. "Eggman" was one of his nicknames; as stated by Trogdor, in Sonic Adventure he seemed irritated, and in all comics and cartoons, Sonic constantly called him names like "Egghead", "Eggman", "Robuttnick", etc. so the name "Death Egg" never seemed off to me.
Obviously in Brawl he'll be called Eggman, but the Eggman name has always seemed stupid to me. Robotnik FTW.

Apparently, Sonic can charge up a Figure-8 move a la Sonic CD. Sweet!
Also, I'm digging the Advance Wars trophy.

Every time I think Brawl cannot get any more awesome...
You can create your own stages this time?! No way. REALLY?! With a feature like that, won’t I be able to play this game forever?!
Apparently it’s true...!!!
Those who enjoy a little effort may be able to enjoy this stage builder for the rest of their lives.
First, start from the initialize setting.
You start by choosing the size of the stage, the background pattern, and the music that will play. Oops! Sorry. For music, you’ll only be able to choose from the songs you have available.
This is the edit screen!
Basically, you choose parts from the palette on the side and place them in the field.
The controls vary by controller, but each one can do the following:
Flip parts left to right
Enlarge or shrink parts
Zoom in or out on the screen
Swap palettes
Erase
...Among other things.
Just place terrain however you like. Chuckity-chuckity-CHUCK!
Then try it out!
Modify it and try it... Repeat as necessary. Make your own ideal stage!
Mmm... That’s amazing.
And you can save a name and a comment for the stage.
You can change the music on the save screen. Choose something that matches the mood of your stage.
And I’m happy that this is compatible with SD cards. You don’t have to worry about size, so make as many stages as you like.
Also, if you’ve finished registering someone as both a Wii Friend and a Smash friend, you’ll be able to send custom stages to each other.
Now, for those who hate putting effort into such things, we’ve also prepared something you can enjoy as well.
"Submit" ...?
That’s right! You can use your Wi-Fi connection to send stages you’ve made to Nintendo! (However, you can’t submit repeatedly. Maybe just once per day?)
And a stage selected from the entire daily collection will be sent from Nintendo to your Wii. A stage made by someone else will come to you over the Internet once per day!
DUN DUN DUNNNNNN! That’s the shocking truth. This means you’ll be able to experience a new stage every day—the flavor of the day, if you will. However, the plan is for that stage to vanish once one day has passed. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
You can submit in both the Snapshots mode and the Stage Builder mode, allowing everyone to enjoy the creations of others. The fun of sharing is one of the ways that I wanted to take advantage of Wi-Fi for something other than pure battling.
Today’s stage has lots of traps...
This is our ideal current plan. We still don’t know the exact service period. And future tuning may result in changes to the spec.
But for now, please look forward to it!
!

I think my heart just stopped. Including Sonic is awesome.

And today's was a new stage for the Ice Climbers: The Summit.
You start off fighting on platforms at the top of Icicle Mountain
Nice Halloween reference, too.
Then the summit breaks off, and starts avalanching down the mountain
And eventually comes to a crash in the water.
The coolest part, as I see it, is the fish that attempt to eat you with madness in their hearts.
I'm totally digging the new stages now.

Apparently Balloon Fighter was meant to be in Melee and removed because he wasn't distinctive enough...some people are theorizing that perhaps Tingle might take the unused assets and replace him, since they did have a "Tingle's Balloon Fight" game.
Oh please no.
Also, apparently Krystal is in the game. The voice actor listed Brawl on her resume.

EDIT: Nevermind, it's not. Hale does Samus Aran and ToS's Sheena, so I knew she was big in the industry.
She removed it, but the blank spot on the resume there under Starfox used to say Krystal, Knuckle Joe, and Zero Suit Samus.

I think you mean "oh please yes"! That way we can beat the crap out of him whenever we feel like it. I was thinking about doing a Tingle torture game, but if they include him, I won't have to. Melee was a bit disappointing in that the worst you could do to him was to drop him in the ocean...Praxis wrote:Apparently Balloon Fighter was meant to be in Melee and removed because he wasn't distinctive enough...some people are theorizing that perhaps Tingle might take the unused assets and replace him, since they did have a "Tingle's Balloon Fight" game.
