Off to G&C because really it makes me laugh how either people not getting it, and making a huge shit about it. Or perhaps how odd that a comic should use a parable about slow and steady WINNING over something that obviously is not about that at all.

Of course, I'm not really sure about the entire G80 design long-term, the GS is kinda weak, Arrow might shed some more light there.
Well, it's too long a "long term" to even figure what to buy down the road.
Page 7 and page 8 of the anandtech review shows why it's fucking awesome. Still not sure about SLI. Your choice.
Ghost..uh, may I ask why it was moved? It wasn't meant to be a serious thread and it got hijacked five differant ways.

There are rumours swirling around that there might be a revamped 8800GTS coming out. Nothing concrete though.
Though, if that does not come true, it will definitely be a 8800GT for me (yeah, I have seen the review before.).

UPDATE - 10/29/07-8:29am: A very interesting addendum to this. I just got off the phone with BFG Tech and NVIDIA has been doing some strange things lately. As of this morning, the GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB (unsure on the 320MB) will have its stream processors officially increased to 112, the same as the GT. This should put the GTS back ahead of the GT as per the paper specs. However, the separation in the products is still going to be very small except for those of you wanting to run high resolutions with AA turned on. To do that you are still going to need a $400+ video card..or so. Our new spec GTS is on the way to us now and we will of course be updating you. Given the GT's faster clocks and possibly larger texture unit, we will have to wait and see. Undoubtedly though, the 8800 GT remains a stellar value at the expected price points.

8800GT is out now.
New 8800GTS is on the way, and nvidia is silly for continuing to call it an 8800GTS even though it has a newer, better processor.
But anyone interested in getting a new card now for $200-$250 should really wait a few weeks to see how the ATI 3000 series competes. Hopefully the 8800s will be destroyed and competition will continue as it should.

Thats amusing, given the R670(AKA the HD 3800) has no plans of competing for the high end!Seggybop wrote:8800GT is out now.

Also, in the rumour department.
Techreport
With Nvidia's GeForce 8800 GT out the door and benchmarked, the big question is whether AMD's upcoming RV670-based Radeon HD 3800 graphics processors will have what it takes to compete. Specifications for the Radeons have leaked out already, and it seems like the fastest model (nicknamed "Gladiator") will run at 825MHz with 512MB of 1200MHz GDDR4 memory. That tells us little about real-world performance, but Fudzilla claims to already know how the new Radeon will perform, and says AMD will lose to Nvidia. Quite badly so. For the "Gladiator" Radeon HD 3800, Fudzilla quotes performance 8-10% lower than that of the GeForce 8800 GT.
Fudzilla says AMD will use lower prices to nab sales away from Nvidia. As it did with the Radeon HD 2600 and 2400 series, AMD will apparently undercut Nvidia, this time by around $30-50. The Radeon HD 3800 may therefore be priced under the $200 mark when it launches on November 15.

Fudzilla is a really reliable source, isn't it?
I've heard that the 3850 will compete with the 8800GT and the 3870 will be top-end. Of course, there are no actual benchmarks or even leaks that would serve to detract from 8800GT sales, which seems odd unless the performance is weak. Regardless, it seems silly not to wait and find out unless one is desperate for a new card immediately.

Fudzilla was reliable enough on the R600. I'm waiting anyway, mostly for the cards to even reach the middle east.Seggybop wrote:Fudzilla is a really reliable source, isn't it?

If AMD is going to ship another shit product, it will definitely be the 8800GT. With regard to the 8800GTS with 112 stream processors, I will be interested in seeing if there are any marked improvements, though I am waiting for EVGA's Super Super Overclocked card to come on board. That card is very very interesting.

So far, the info on the "new" 8800 GTS is that it's just the same old core with an extra eighth enabled and a clockspeed boost. Looks like they're trying to squeeze a bit more life out of existing manufacturing parts, and it's not actually a new card at all. Judging by the specs, it will be even with the 8800 GT at best. My theory is that nVidia chose the name GT to confuse people so they'll keep paying top dollar for obsolete GTS parts until the inventory is cleared, and all this bullshit about a "new" GTS has the same objective.

Lack of competition is sad.
And just as ATi's Linux drivers were beginning to shape up significantly too: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a ... =897&num=1
Oh well, my nVidia 7600GT still works and I don't really have time for games lately.

1) The ATi cards should see a HUGE boost in AA/AF preformance!B3D forum member wrote:Just finished reading Josh's latest on penstarsys, summary ..
G92 is 384bit
Nvidia shaved off 80-100 million transistors (ala G71), some undisclosed/unknown feature taking up the space
Not sure if G92 has DP support
AMD partners happy with the way they handled R600 EOL (2900 Pro)
RV670 has fixed AA resolve that plagued R600
Nvidia will refresh their line up in November
8800GTX (new) - 700MHz Core, 128SPs @ 1800MHz, 384-bit
8800GTS (new) - 650MHz Core, 112SPs @ 1600MHz, 320-bit
GX2 in Q1 2008 - 600MHz Core(s), 2 x 128 SPs, 1.5GB
Possibility of dual-slot RV670 at 1GHz to combat some of these refreshes (GTS), also possible that RV670 is 512-bit
2 x RV670 card in Q1 2008
2) The GTS/GTX refresh be good enough to get them the top again compared to the GT.
EDIT: Some people on B3D are commenting that this guy is usually wrong on the ATi stuff, so take this with a grain of salt. On the other hand, I am so not going through the 30 page R670 rumour thread there.

Anyone care to speculate on why nvidia is reusing names like this? It seems like it's going to cause unending confusion for everyone; why couldn't they have gone 8850 or 8900 GT/GTS/GTX instead of releasing identically named products with different capabilities?

Well... Daily Tech seems to think the new GTS will also be G92 based. *shrug* We'll probably see next month.Daily Tech wrote: This would be mean the additional 16 shader units exist on all GeForce 8800 GT cards, but are disabled for yield or marketing purposes. In addition to the extra shaders, the new G92 will also feature higher core frequencies and support for up to 1GB GDDR3.
The new 65nm G92 has a tentative SKU designation of GeForce 8800 GTS. This might sound confusing as NVIDIA already sports a GeForce 8800 GTS card based on the 90nm G80 silicon. However, since G92 sports a 256-bit memory interface, the new 8800 GTS cards will feature traditional memory blocks of 512MB or 1024MB. The older, G80-based GeForce 8800 GTS features 320-bit memory blocks of 320MB or 640MB.
