WANT to keep abreast of the latest in male fashion? Well, the message from Milan is to say goodbye to Mr Macho and hello to Mr Androgyny.

Ms Westwood put punk clothing on the map, featuring safety pins, slashed T-shirts, chains and dog collars in the '70s.

The designer also pioneered the new romantic look of the '80s which featured feminine frilled and flounced shirts for men.

But this time around the Westwood catwalk also featured plenty of cues from womens' wear.

Jumpers came in tones of soft camel and rose, featured blouson sleeves and ruffled cuffs, and were teamed with fetching slim-hipped pants and cute peek-a-boo bonnet-style scarves.

Even the catwalk pose took on a feminine trait – gone was the tough guy stance.

It was replaced by a coy swivel of the hips contrived to give the model the slimmest silhouette possible.

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment, aren't fashion shows sort of like car shows where the manufacturers show off concept cars? Slap every wild idea you've come up with in the last year on one or two vehicles, and see which ones stick? The designer (hopefully) doesn't think falsies will become fashionable on men, but she's probably betting that more feminine styles will become popular amongst men. The boobs just exaggerate the femininity of the clothing.

Hey, I prefer my clothing to look masculine, too. But it's not like it's unprecedented for androgyny to be in. Look at some of the shit they were wearing in the 70s and 80s.

Lots of clothing considered feminine these days was masculine once; and even some masculine clothing these days (well, masculine until recently), was once primarily feminine.

But the combination of mindless, indescribable... Well, I'll leave it there, since it really is both, and crass consumerism. It makes you long for a performance of Wagner in the nude. Or just goddamn anything else.

Of course, the plus side of ubercapitalism is that if there's any hope for society this will flop faster than the leisure suit and can't be forced on you.

I mean, this makes about as much sense as women wearing penile gourds, though probably isn't as uncomfortable as that would be.
