From the few reviews I have read and from what His Majesty, King Stark Of The Curmudgeons has said about it, I get the impression its not very good, heh.

I've played it, and concluded that it was total, utter shit.

I've been playing the demo, and I don't know what the hell nickolay is talking about. Sure, it's not the freshest thing in the drawer, but it ain't rotting yet. From what I saw, it's just another 3rd-person action-roleplaying game. Not that exciting, nothing much new, but not horrific either. It was fun to play for awhile.

Are you kidding? Let's see...
Assault rifles with infinite ammo, yet an absurd 20 meter range...
Full-auto fire that can't hit the broad side of a barn from 1 meter away...
Terrible voice acting, on the rare occasions that voices are actually used...
Models/textures that look like they're from 1999, at medium/high settings.
And finally, recycled, uninspired, and poorly-designed levels.

This is after just a couple of hours of play. I could come up with another dozen points, if I got bored enough to continue the game.

Well, if you are looking for a FPS this isn't it. KOTOR for example, had infinite ammo.

But yeah, the game feels ... a bit clinched.

Don't forget dialog that doesn't fit the setting (lol humanity wiped out, resistance war, but I had some demons that got away plz kill 6 bone lords lol), the extremely low difficulty, the really poorly balanced/distinct classes, and the 'randomly generated' levels that seem exactly the fucking same anyway (even in different places).

The only thing that isn't shit is the socket system, and it's not used for anything exciting. Get a sniper rifle, you win. Huzzah for game design.

My brother knows a guy who worked on the game. He wanted to make alot of really good changes like nickolay pointed out, but he was shouted down.

I really liked his geomancer/druid character.

My friend and I got it because, well, we like collecting stuff and shooting stuff, and we like playing cooperative games that don't cost money. Frankly, we prefer Titan Quest and Diablo mainly for the looting, which this game has in spades. The sub-par graphics and unusual play issues like infinite ammo guns and tiny ranges don't bother me one bit, since I still enjoy the gameplay despite its low realism and high kitch.

Partly because it would have costed development more, and also because they didn't want the plot to be too intellectual. The guy's videogame philosophy, which I agree with, is:

Fuck 3 extra months of development. Fuck a 10% budget increase. People STILL play Diablo, and Starcraft, and Masters of Orion 2. Make a game you want to play, and they'll play it forever.

At least they're honest that their business plan is 'exploit obsessive idiots with no regard to quality'. :)

It's not the gold-skinned god of videogames, to be sure, but I don't feel I wasted my money on the product they provided. That's really the problem with something that either appeals to a niche market or is inherently mediocre; the people who enjoy it will enjoy it as a satisfactory - if not roundly exciting - use of their time and money, and the people who hate it will hate it passionately for a few days and then forget it exists.

I dunno, while it's not offensive (just bland), as a Diablo-em-up issues like the unbalanced classes should become a serious problem. Titan Quest had nicely unbalanced classes that were actually different enough to play different, instead of 'lol everyone has guns' even mages. :)

jI'm guessing it was just the Random item/level people from Diablo II that left and made this game. Because its is definitely lacking the well designed classes that makes Diablo II, along with the random items and levels, so replayable.

Looking at the engineer, the first class I've tried, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of variation to the character. Which the great thing about Diablo II, you could choose several skill groupings and have radically different characters in the same class. Go Golemancer and have one huge tank creature supported by curses, go Blood Golemmancer and have a physical immune tank with Iron Maiden, go Bonemancer and be a spell chucker, poisonmancer is more of a melee caster. Paly can be a pure warrior carracter with Shockadins, Zealots, or there are some good Pure Healer Pallys as well as the Hammerdin magelike. Barbarians can be damage intesive whirlers, or niegh untouchable Concentration Barbarian.

There seems to be little/no variation in the classes, except for different combonation of skills(ranged Drone vs Close combat drone + which two bots)

In the end, there are so many hot-shelf games coming out in the next two weeks, Hellgate is almost guaranteed to be forgotten by 70% of its player base one minute after they beat it and move onto the next big thing.

I bought it. I'm having fun with the summoner class and am enjoying the game enough to want to play through it and see all the plot. Will I replay it? Probably not. The classes don't seem to be different enough to offer that much of a different experience for a second play through.
