Ten Commandments of the Mafia

Post by Androsphinx »

Wasn't sure if this should go here or in N&P.

But you've seen the Ten commandments of Driving. Now, the Ten Commandments of the mafia are revealed to all. For example, here
1. No one can present himself directly to another of our friends. There must be a third person to do it.

2. Never look at the wives of friends.

3. Never be seen with cops.

4. Don't go to pubs and clubs.

5. Always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty - even if your wife is about to give birth.

6. Appointments must absolutely be respected.

7. Wives must be treated with respect.

8. When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth.

9. Money cannot be appropriated if it belongs to others or to other families.

10. People who can't be part of Cosa Nostra: anyone who has a close relative in the police, anyone with a two-timing relative in the family, anyone who behaves badly and doesn't hold to moral values.
"what huge and loathsome abnormality was the Sphinx originally carven to represent? Accursed is the sight, be it in dream or not, that revealed to me the supreme horror - the Unknown God of the Dead, which licks its colossal chops in the unsuspected abyss, fed hideous morsels by soulless absurdities that should not exist" - Harry Houdini "Under the Pyramids"

"The goal of science is to substitute facts for appearances and demonstrations for impressions" - John Ruskin, "Stones of Venice"

:D

This just made my day. It's the fucking mafia! They kill people and blow up roads and extort money and run drugs. How moral can you get if you want to be a member? :D

Don't forget, it's the Italian Mafia, so they're all good little Catholics. Which means that killing people is perfectly OK, but porn, sex out of weldock, or using condoms isn't.

Have a very nice day.

Not necessarily. If you recognize where morality came from (tribal society) and why (rules necessary for collective survival and properity), you can assemble an objective, logic-based morality scheme. The only trick is first defining what such a scheme is supposed to accomplish: a question which is answered by realizing where morality came from.

^ Ideally, perhaps.

I probably should have qualified it: Morality is subjective, in practice.

Somewhat, a made man can respect his wife but the Cosa Nostra trumps that. But then again that list is pure grade A bullshit.

Lupara is a common weapon here in Italy, at the point that in some old Disney stories Scrooge possessed and fired a lupara, so I forgot that in other countries someone could don't know them and their old association with the Mafia. For further infos, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupara .

Even funnier is the fact that all those commandments have been broken by Mafia bosses in the past...so I guess those are more designed to actually protect the bosses from the footsoldiers.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

It's a series of rules imposed by a powerful elite on their subordinates. Of course that's what it does!

Based on the story, I figure that these were going to be the rules if this guy had become the BIG boss.[/b]

Is that from The Sopranos or something? :?

Yeah, it's like most organizations. In fact, it should sound very familiar: Live a good life, do as we say, and you'll get a hojillion virgins when you blow yourself up. You think most of the top Islamic dudes believe this stuff? And I mean the crazy fundamentalist stuff, not the mainstream Islam.

You have no idea just how right you are. Unless, that is, you have a senile grandmother charged with taking care of her stroke-stricken husband who moans and wails over those short skirts the girls these days wear and all them gays and Pakis taking over this country, but Pope Ratty and her scatterbrain father are paragons of virtue.

You don't know what are you saying: the godfathers are the paragons of virtue if confronted with Herr Ratzinger. I live too near to them, I know this.

Aren't the godfathers and Herr Ratzinger simply in different departments of the same organization...?

I don't know, but I think no. But the real difference is that the godfathers pay the electricity they use, punish their subordinates that rape women and children and don't tell us what's morality, the Pope doesn't pay the electricity that he imports from Italy because "a country cannot enforce taxes in another country" (the Vatican is separated from Italy), even if Italy pays the electricity that it import from France, protects his subordinates that rape women and children and then tells to all world the nature of morality.

Would you say you prefer the Mafia to the Church as an influence in Italian society?

No, I'm saying that Mafia is more coherent than Ratzinger.
