Imperialtype 3: Hawks and Cubes. I imagined the rearthingies being like big warhammer heads. Was trying to think of something inquistor-y, and I liked the hawksbill prow as well. Guns would be fitted into the trench. Not sure what the two big vertical assemblies would be for, but I bet they're raised weapon platforms, with guns set onto either sufrace, and the top and button flat areas as heat sinks and sensor arrays. I'm also trying to make it a 'rockets face forwards' ship, so the big up and down things would feel, to the crew inside as a front-back section, not as up-down.

Culture in the Kushawni Imperial Province
Ever since the great plague that ravaged them on the trip to the rim, the Kushawni have always been a people who forever felt on their own. When collapse came yet again to the Imperium long ago, the importance of being strong, of inner determination, guts and hard work!
Due mostly to intervention form the CityMind, a sense of striving for a higher purpose, of something better, has been deeply ingrained in Kushawni culture. In a sense, no Kushawni should ever feel to be 'happy' with any given job, as the true ‘job’ of a Kushawni is to always attain a greater goal. In a sense, to always Aim for the Top!
An Artist should not rest till they have become the best Artist possible! A work not content till he is the best worker there is. As a result competition and rivalries are fierce, but the work ethic and production for the society is as equally fierce. Again the CityMind has fostered this among it’s people with very poress class distinctions.
With training, hard work, and determination, even a Cargo pilot (given many many years) could become a military captain or a Freighter could someday become a BusterMachine.

It's an interesting style, though to be honest I don't like it. I did actually like his sphereship, which was quite impressive.
Now what follows is pure aesthetics, and should not be seen as any official strongarming or anything of the like. I'm just going to ramble on what I like in starships.
When I think Imperial, I think of hard, imposing lines with simple and elegant structures. After all, the original designs had to be badass to win wars. Once they became bloated, they started doing stupid stuff like gilding the hull, throwing on observation towers for the Emperor to watch the battles, etc.
I'll see if I can't do some sketches of what I mean tomorrow. Of course, without my image editing software...or scanner...or tablet, we're looking at photos of my sketchbook, but hey.

Okay, so I just got finished making a substantial addition to my history of Haruhiism in the Terran Empire. Yes, the parts involving Admiral Sasaki are contrived. Yes, I realized that I was essentially ripping off the Horus Heresy in various parts.
I ship Eino Ilmari Juutilainen x Lydia V. Litvyak.

I think I kmnow exactly what Hotfoot is talking about. For something as massive, old, and bloated as the Imperium at its height, one would imagine it's warships have passed through stages.
You have:
We build them this way because they kick butt most, to
We build them this way because they look cool
Really, when you (think) you have no real enemies, your production in deed may became overly ornamental, bloated, and not fulyl functional. Perhaps in the beggining they had sphearships, or hard, function brickships. Now, perhaps hthey have vast ships with bows and 'masts' and things that inspire Awe and stir the public! but might not be practical...

Imperial Ship Style
One of the issues is the 'hard and rigid' style is definately Nitram's purview. If the Empire is also a 'hard and rigid' sort of look then doubtless it's going to be a rather ugly looking fight. I'd be okay with battlespheres but I wanted to test the waters with new ideas.
It also bears noting that there's no reason the ship I drew couldn't have been entirely encrusted with murals, frescoes, and statues of the Emperor and such. You wouldn't be able to see it at this range anyway, and especially not on a sketch. The only way to make artwork that would be would require it to be larger than the size of mount rushmore, at least from the hypothetical range of our 'camera' was viewing.
So we any closer to an idea? We could say that Imperial ships had no Hull Design of their own, and were instead simply hulls from other nations upgraded with Imperial Weaponry instead. They would be given a paintjob that fits the Imperial Theme, but would otherwise be a fleet of it's constituent nations, with Earth having it's own style (but not comprising too much more of the fleet than everyone else, even if they were rather upgunned).
I think there's some elegence to that idea, as it means all of our types of ships could have been in Imperial Navies, led into battle by Battlespheres or something... but I'd like to know. I obviously like my design, but we should decide on a general theme for them, since we're all going to be buying into the Imperial Ship section, probably.
The only reason I suggest the "Fleet of Upgrades" idea is that it saves us time by letting us focus on just a few pieces of Earth's fleet as the 'Imperial' style, and say that the rest of the warships were a mix of the Empire's favorite versions of all our fleets. The person this would impact most is Consequences, as he wants to be a literal interpertation of an Imperial fleet.
So we either need to have a single Imperial theme that we all will recognize when someone says 'Imperial,' just so we know what we're talking about--or we go with an idea that allows the Empire to be essentially a UN fleet made up of UN Nation Navies.
Imperial Tech Stuff
Okay. I'm not too sure what we all think, but I'll make some stuff up so we can get further to finalizing Imperial tech. I know I and a few others want to use the Imperials as a basis for our forces, so let's figure out what they use? I'll make some proposals based on the idea above that the Empire upgrades other ships rather than building them all from scratch:
Bullets or Beams?
Beamers, particularly, Particle Beams: Not only less annoying to keep stocked, but directly benefits from Imperial Reactors while not being ammo that the Imperials could lose track of and see getting shot back at themselves. I like the idea of having some Bomb-Pumped Lasers on some ships as a midrange weapon, but particle beams let us do a lot of cool stuff, and plus, it lets me steal Neph's idea of bendy lasers for the Empire. If they fire Proton Beams, they could use emag fields to bend them around back at the enemy. That'd look pretty sexy.
Shields or Armor?
Both, mostly shields: I think Imperial ships need lots of armor, but I think they should lose that fight to the Armor Brick nations like the Enclave, instead using their superior technology to create high-power energy shields. This would let them take any shape of ship, give it an Imperial reactor, and then give it an Imperial shield. Bam, done.
And I'd love if these were oldskool types of shields, non-bubble, the types that'd get hot and start glowing red, making your entire ship glow and then melt away or explode when it gets overwhelmed. It'd also make your ship heat up. I like the idea of heat death from battle being as dangerous as actual cannonfire.
What Type of Missiles?
Drones, not Macross Missiles I love missiles, capship missiles, and attack drones like cruise missiles. But I think wasteful macross swarms just makes them look kinda silly--the low-range kiloton type weapons should be nuclear AA Flak. For attack missiles, I love combat wasps more than anything, and there's something uniquely badass about a pissed off AI inside of a missile trying to out-think your weapon systems as it bores in on you for a multi-stage weapon strike and kinetic kill. Plus, it allows them to install a drone controller on a ship and just kick drones out into space or fire them from accelerator cannons to get them into combat, a good way for upgunning small ships.
And the rest?
That depends on the hull type. They'll have good engines, EW, and such across the board. But the rest of the stuff, like engine style or whatnot, could be based primarily on the ships they're coming from. FTL matters more than STL, and they'd all have Imperial Hyperdrives. That basically covers all the pertinent stuff I can think of. Others got tech-types they'd like to define, and debates they'd like to raise with this? The Imperials are NOT my faction, I just want to get them all decided so we can figure out how they compare to our ships.

I must say I adore Covie's style of Imperial shipping. It has a certain amount of grandeur and sheer style.
As for my ships... I can't draw worth shit, so I skip any attempts to. But I'd like to go with a more aerodynamic version of the Vulcan ships from ENT, especially the long, slim ones with the massive rings around them.

I'm leaning toward "Ottoman Empire in space" in which case my ships shall look like space pre-dreadnought battleships. The turrets fire shells with terminal guidance, basically a cross between a ballistic weapon and a missile. The smaller guns will be lasers and particle beams.

Nautical lines?
Turrets on the top only?

I just moved out of my old apartment, and it could be a day or two before I get my own computer on the Internet. Just a heads up for why I haven't been on for the past couple of days; I'm still around.

It should look recognizably like a battleship in Space, but also have a reasonable design for a space-ship. I don't want Space Battleship Yamato.Darkevilme wrote:How much of the drednaughty look are you planning on adrian?
Yes, but different from those in real life battleships. My ship's turrets should be able to direct fire along the x and y axes just as well as along the z axis. They would be shaped like squat isosceles trapezoids and allow the gun to fully traverse 180 degrees.big prominent slab sided turrets?
A little yes, but still squarish in shape. Look at SMS Radetzky, USS Conecticut, and USS Vermont for a general idea. They will be capable of setting down on large bodies of water, but they don't have to steam smoothly through them.Nautical lines?
No, that's stupid. There should be turrets at the top and bottom. Probably might be a good idea to put the wing turrets on the sides.Turrets on the top only?
Yeah, flying bridge, comms antennas, detection equipment, etc. Nothing vital though.superstructurey tower bits sticking up?
While I am pretty settled on the kind of ships. It suddenly occurred to me that Austria-Hungary (in space) might be more fun to do than Ottoman Empire (in space). I'd get to call my navy the K.u.K Krigsmarine, but on the other hand I wouldn't get to name one of my ships Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

I understand the motivation, that's what I did last time too. Just was a random comment after seeing so many humorous nations cropping up.
