Fucking conspiracy theorist loonies ...
While I was upgrading the system, I had plenty of time to listen to the radio. And while I was listening, some whack-job conspiracy theorist came on. "OK", I thought, "this could be amusing".
So the guy starts in on his spiel, talking about how "there are loose threads" in the accepted 9/11 tower collapse explanation (whatever the fuck "loose threads" are; I assume they are "anything that cannot be explained to me to my full and complete satisfaction and comprehension despite my total lack of technical background in any of the necessary specializations"). That was pretty much expected. But then he brings on a guest, who he promises to bring something new and radical to the conspiracy theory world.
So what does she do? She starts talking about how, despite her best efforts, she could never tie together the last two thousand years of world history into any kind of coherent conspiracy theory. Try as she might to "connect the dots", they were all too often un-connectable. Groups that rose to power and seemed to control much of the wealth of the world were routinely toppled and replaced by other groups, with no sense whatsoever of any kind of deliberate "hand off" of power and wealth from one group to the other.
At this point, I was thinking "So ... this is where you realize that you can't tie the last two thousand years of history into some shadowy conspiracy, right"? But of course, that was not her conclusion. She went on to say that this lack of any apparent connection between the world's risen and fallen empires and power groups makes it look as if there is no real unifying thread at all. Once again, I said out loud: "And soooooo ... there isn't one, right?"
But noooo, guess what she concluded. She concluded that there is only one possible answer: extradimensional beings. Jesus fucking Christ, these people are so completely fucking nuts. And the host was talking as if this was the most reasonable thing in the world, followed by callers who were obviously of identical mindsets. Who are these goddamned idiots?

Is that a rerun of "Coast to Coast AM"? Because it sounds exactly like that show. When I did graveyard security shifts I used to listen to that shit and just laugh my ass off. I thought it was a total parody thing, but it was 100% real. They had people on talking about fucking Vampires, Aliens, Demons, and the fucking Illuminati.

That's how a lot of people reason, scary as it may sound. They may even seem reasonable in normal life - can deal with problems, work through conflicts, etc.Darth Wong wrote: But noooo, guess what she concluded. Untill you get to stuff that doesn't actually affect them much. Then all the screws come off, because it's not really about the truth - it's about feeling better.
Like it or not, truth about history, science, etc. just plain doesn't matter to most people. If they can sound off on their pet theory, they feel good, like they know something others don't, and that's what really matters. So if they were forced to admit they are wrong, they'd look foolish, and they can't have that. See: Darkstar.
You probably do it yourself from time to time, but most scientists are conditioned to simply think differently from other people, so it doesn't cause them so much anguish if their pet theory falls to pieces. For a competent scientist, truth matters rather than pretense.
It also helps that scientists (and historical scholars) know what the fuck they are talking about.

As for the OP, that's charming. If these people weren't incurably mad, they'd be able to see that their argument is the simplest target for Occam's Razor ever devised.
Of course, it's never about the evidence- it's about the conclusion that validates the world view.

Hey, speaking of total loons, look at this video I found just a bit ago.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QRu6zQoH4cA
The video is only half of it- read the description... or at least as much as you can. It was literally too long for me to quote on another message board.
(And before anyone asks, no I was not trying to find this shit. I have no idea how it got flagged from my search.)

She was no satirist. She was hawking her bullshit book, "The Secret History of the World and How To Get Out Alive". Available from Amazon:Napoleon the Clown wrote:I would like to point out the outside possibility of the woman on the radio being a smartass that was doing that to make fun of the conspiracy nuts. Though I doubt that was the case.

Here's the blurb:
I love the way she tries to use her marriage to a physicist in order to back up her bullshit. Perhaps she feels that scientific knowledge is a sexually transmitted disease. If you heard the Truth, would you believe it? Ancient civilizations. Hyperdimensional realities. DNA changes. Bible conspiracies. What are the realities? What is disinformation? The Secret History of The World and How To Get Out Alive is the definitive book of the real answers where Truth is more fantastic than fiction. Laura Knight-Jadczyk, wife of internationally known theoretical physicist, Arkadiusz Jadczyk, an expert in hyperdimensional physics, draws on science and mysticism to pierce the veil of reality. Due to the many threats on her life from agents and agencies known and unknown, Laura left the United States to live in France, where she is working closely with Patrick Rivière, student of Eugene Canseliet, the only disciple of the legendary alchemist Fulcanelli. To this day, Laura continues to undergo ad-hominem attacks on her web pages, her blog and even as faux book 'reviews' on book seller websites, by those threatened by the information she reveals in this definitive work. Yet, with sparkling humour and wisdom, she picks up where Fulcanelli left off, sharing over thirty years of research to reveal, for the first time, The Great Work and the esoteric Science of the Ancients in terms accessible to scholar and layperson alike. Laura Knight-Jadczyk was interviews on BBC radio on February 12th, 2007. To read a transcript of this interview, go to the Red Pill Press (.) com.

The book's marketing blurb doesn't do her lunacy justice. If you look at the logic she espoused on that talk show last night, it works like this:
- "I know there has been a vast global conspiracy for thousands of years".
- "I cannot find any evidence for one."
- "Therefore, it must exist outside space and time. There is no other explanation."
Unbelievable. And the other "Truthers" hail this as sound logic!

You know how one disease pathogen can cause more than one type of illness, like how the same virus can manifest either as chicken pox, or as shingles...?
Same thing, with religious weirditude and conspiracy-nobbling. Just different manifestations of faith.
And the funny part, is that the religious whackies generally think the conspiracy-mongers are nuts, and the conspiracy-mongers feel the same way about the religious whackies. They don't see that they're just displaying different symptoms of infection by the same pathogen.

Y'know Mike, you should make one. Put it under some false pen name and see if you can't get a flock of these idiots to believe this.Darth Wong wrote:The book's marketing blurb doesn't do her lunacy justice. If you look at the logic she espoused on that talk show last night, it works like this:

I mean, the level of sheer absurdity of this should slot these books into alternative fiction, but instead get slotted into New Age nonfiction.

It will be hilarious when Mike finally comes out saying "I made it all up! Oh yeah, fucking awesome. There'd be a brand spanking new cult to swallow up new morons, in service of no one save its own self-perpetuation. That'd be just lovely.PeZook wrote: It will be hilarious when Mike finally comes out saying "I made it all up! It reminds me of these oh so witty satirical sites like landoverbaptist, trying as they are for subtle satire by acting as if they were actual believers. While chortling at their own cleverness, they fail to grasp how only reasonably critical people who already agree with them will accept it as parody, while the vast majority will either feel intimidated or validated. To me, that's pretty much the definition of "backfiring."
Note that I'm sick as an ass-fucked wallaby at the moment, so my argument is perhaps less cogent than I would have like it to be. Still, my voice must be heard, and so I ask my reader to read the above post out loud. Try for a pleasantly manly voice while doing it.

How about this one:
Because, hey, nobody ever insults a conspiracy theorist because the theories are total whackjob creations that would take an IQ of 5 to believe. No, it's because these people are "threatened" by this secret "information" that will reveal that the whole world is a lie! A LIE I TELL YOU!To this day, Laura continues to undergo ad-hominem attacks on her web pages, her blog and even as faux book 'reviews' on book seller websites, by those threatened by the information she reveals in this definitive work.
