Power supply fan...

Post by Superman »

Other than the damn thing breaking, is there any reason why the power supply's fan wouldn't work?

As far as I’m aware you can’t control power supply fan speed via software on your desktop because you’ve got no datalink (unless you’re insane and fitted custom fans!), so if the fan isn’t working it can’t be anything but a broken fan.

I had that happen on an old Gateway I had, fan crapped out but the power supply still worked fine, in fact even without the fan it still worked fine and it took some time for me to notice it was dead. What was more the fan was held in by pop rivets and I wasn’t willing to drill into the fan housing to remove them, since that would fill the inside of the housing with metal shavings.

My solution? I broke the blades off the old fan, and then simply stacked a new fan on top of the old one, and it worked just fine. It was damn easy too, since the old fan had screw holes on top, and I could simply screw the new one onto those. Honestly though you could get away with doing this via duct tape as long as the power supply isn’t particularly high powered. A new 80mm fan will cost about three bucks.

The power supply itself could be having a problem or mabye the fan is clogged by years and years of dirt buildup. I've seen one or two with a gross amount of dust/lint build up. Otherwise as SS mentioned there typically isnt a link to that fan and your mobo.
