SYDNEY (AFP) - Santas in Australia's largest city have been told not to use Father Christmas's traditional "ho ho ho" greeting because it may be offensive to women, it was reported Thursday.

Sydney's Santa Clauses have instead been instructed to say "ha ha ha" instead, the Daily Telegraph reported.
One disgruntled Santa told the newspaper a recruitment firm warned him not to use "ho ho ho" because it could frighten children and was too close to "ho", a US slang term for prostitute.
"Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs the campaign against sexualising children called Kids Free 2B Kids.
"We are talking about little kids who do not understand that "ho, ho, ho" has any other connotation and nor should they," she told the Telegraph.
"Leave Santa alone."
A local spokesman for the US-based Westaff recruitment firm said it was "misleading" to say the company had banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being left up to the discretion of the individual Santa himself.

Doesn't this imply that the Aussie government assumes that all women will automatically respond to "Ho ho ho", further implying that they think they are all "Ho ho ho"s?

Except even a broken clock is right twice a day. This kind of idiocy may be lapped up by such rags, but that doesn't mean we should automatically ignore it because conservative loons feel it brings Armageddon to society.Zuul wrote:PC GONE MAD!

It's eerily similar to O'Reilly's ranting about Christmas and "happy holidays" in stupidity if this is true.

I seem to remember that when Don Imus lost his job, there were a couple of cartoons showing Santa losing his job for saying "Ho, ho, ho". Life imimating art, I guess.
"what huge and loathsome abnormality was the Sphinx originally carven to represent? Accursed is the sight, be it in dream or not, that revealed to me the supreme horror - the Unknown God of the Dead, which licks its colossal chops in the unsuspected abyss, fed hideous morsels by soulless absurdities that should not exist" - Harry Houdini "Under the Pyramids"

Sure, but even in this very thread we have bozos saying things like "the Australian government" and "PC police," implying (falsely) that this is some kind of society-wide, over-stretching of the legal process. As opposed to what the article says, which is that a firm that's hiring Santas is being stupid. Le Yawn.Admiral Valdemar wrote:Except even a broken clock is right twice a day. If the Santa does it right, it doesn't even sound like 'ho'. It sounds like a robust, if peculiar, laugh. (See Santa Claus the Movie)

Unfortunately, obnoxious American black women who look for any excuse to get pissed off at others may be a stereotype, but it's a stereotype that has some basis in reality. I say "American black" because American blacks are a particular cultural phenomenon, quite distinct from actual Africans.Admiral Valdemar wrote:Except even a broken clock is right twice a day. That kind of stand-offish, sassy, bitchy "sistah" attitude is reeks painfully to me of inferiority complexes. Not to mention just being generally socially unreasonable from a practical perspective and irritating drivel on the airwaves. They had a terrible rap song called "Bossy" that was about some too-cool-for-school bitch preaching about how she's hot and therefore can act like a rancid cunt. Hurray for the virtues our society triumphs.

And since American blacks and the urban culture they peddle on MTV represent the highest apex of cool imaginable, white suburban girls are now adopting the attitude en masse. I'd lose track if asked to count how often I've been confronted at a party by a white (or native, now that I think of it) girl with this attitude who seemed perfectly ready to throw fists, irrespective of how intimidating the male opponent was.Illuminatus Primus wrote:That kind of stand-offish, sassy, bitchy "sistah" attitude is reeks painfully to me of inferiority complexes. I guess peak oil has some upsides, if that's not too macabre a thing to say.
Not quite. There are three problems here with daring to agree with the Daily Heil. You, I and everybody without mental illness see a generally isolated or minor incident of PCness and we groan and shrug it off because, let's face it, it's nothing to get huffed up about. The Daily Mail and co, however, are different.Admiral Valdemar wrote:Except even a broken clock is right twice a day. 1) They do indeed see it as Armageddon or at the least as a widespread, concerted campaign against Christmas.
2) They ascribe it to secularist liberals. I'm sure some of these PC retards are secularist liberals; trouble is, the non-vocal majority get lumped with them, i.e. the majority that considers this ridiculous.
3) The most pertinent point is that it gives powerful, emotive propaganda in the more important battlegrounds of secularism, the battle to keep genuine, substantial religious influence out of government. Warning against ho-ho-hos is not a valid goal, wanting to base the FCC (or the Ofcom in our case, cf Jerry Springer the Opera) on religious principles and back this with force of law is a good goal, but the former contaminates the latter with its bullshit. Worthy secular goals are shown by association to be ridiculous.

My point(s) exactly. I don't intend to praise the retards over at their offices, but I can't disagree with them finding this stupid. I just don't think it's "ZOMG!!1! END OF TEH W0RLD!!2" crap like their ultimate headline of immigrant pædophiles with a new form of gay AIDS that lowers house prices and promotes anti-Christian ways.
I suppose I should clarify that they exaggerate it so much - and exploit it for Purpose 3 - that it becomes wholly removed from our line on the matter. They are saying superficially the same thing but not only is it unnecessarily vitriolic, it stems from completely different principles - common sense vs religious/conservative bigotry.

I feel guilty for schadenfreude as well, but usually the people in question (arrogant business students, Christian starry-eyes, and pop culture-obsessed myrmidons) ask for it.TithonusSyndrome wrote: I guess peak oil has some upsides, if that's not too macabre a thing to say.

It doesn't look like this idea - that "ho ho ho" will offend people - was started by an actual complaint from American black women. Especially since we are only seeing this in Australia so far, and not the States.Darth Wong wrote:Unfortunately, obnoxious American black women who look for any excuse to get pissed off at others may be a stereotype, but it's a stereotype that has some basis in reality. Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower
