Runtime error while starting Pirates! game

Okay.

What the fucking fuck? The only references I can find to this error on tech support sites (starting with Microsoft's own) talk about it happening while connecting to the Internet, with Microsoft blaming it on AOL's software. As I'm not running AOL and the activity I'm trying to engage in is not online, I don't have the slightest clue what to do about it.

In addition to the runtime error, after the computer has tried and failed to start the game, the DVD drive refuses to open and let me take the game CD out; I have to restart the computer before it will open again.

I've tried all the normal stuff one does when an error like this happens: Restarted the computer, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, ran spyware and virus checks, updated DirectX (even though I knew for a fact I already had a high enough version to run the game), the works. Does anyone know what's going on with this?

It sounds like the game may be loaded into memory, and execution started, which locks the drive until the game exits properly, but then comes upon an error which causes the game to exit unexpectedly. As for how to fix it, see if there's a patch somewhere. Other than that, I've got nothing.
