Did you see the special on History Channel about the Battleship race by naval powers during the pre WW2 years? It was pretty interesting.

They talked about how various countries ( UK,USA,GERMANY) were spending loads of money on BB's even though they were barely used in WW1.

Yeah, I know. Yamato, Bismarck, KGV, Vittorio Veneto, even Iowa class, were all the result of this race.

The Great Depression did not only effect America, most countries were effected. After the expiration of the "building holiday" most countries started building them again to help restart the economy. Also, there was a bit of a psycological factor too, the aura of the "invinciblilty" of battleships was hoped to lend to national pride as well (this was actually the primary reason for the construction of the Itailian Battleships). Not to mention that the aircraft carrier was still considered experimental.
