And they're called fads, not "memes" (which is just a stupid buzzword anyway)

A meme is: A trend, belief, fashion or phrase that is passed from generation to generation through imitation and behavioral replication.

A fad is: A fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time.

They are nearly synonymous, thus you're a dumbass.

Yes, I'm sure a word made by Richard Dawkins is a 'buzzword'.

No, it's a 'meme'. The way it is used now, it is very much a buzzword, regardless of who invented it.

Ergo, the stupid fads in Testing are not memes. Unless you think generational transmission is somehow the same as time-limited propagation among peer groups.

Do you have no reading comprehension whatsoever, or do you just look for reasons to be an ass to me? I said 'nearly synonymous', I did not say entirely.

Can you give an example of where the word meme is used as 'a word or phrase connected with a specialized field or group that usually sounds important or technical and is used primarily to impress laypersons'

The Internet. Specifically the "meme-factories".

Wow, really important, technical, and impressive, except it sounds like it comes from the word mimic and then doesn't have any of those three attributes.

What the hell kind of argument is that? It can't be a buzzword if it sounds stupid? Besides, Merriam-Webster disagrees with you, and describes perfectly how the word "meme" is used.

"Nearly synonymous" does not mean they're interchangeable. A car is not a donkey, even though they're both "vehicles that can transport people or goods".

Testingstan, where dimwits like to use "meme" instead of "fad" because the former was made up by a real scientist and sounds like a totally awesome self-propagating idea instead of what those fads really are; mindlessly pasting together pop culture clichés that were lame to begin with. All to impress... well, other wankers who enjoy the same 4chan flotsam.

Either way, the things you post in testing aren't successful at being fads or memes, as they don't live on past the first generation. In fact, even Ein's picspam seems to enjoy more success at propagation.

Also, Dawkins coined and defined the term to describe an existing phenomenon. Unless you can generate a counterexample that shows his defintion is wrong, we really don't have reasonable grounds to reject his definition.

After all, what other term would you use to describe ideas or phrases that rapidly propagate beyond the initial context; for example; "The cake is a lie!", "I'm Rick James...", and even as far back as AYBABTU.

Catch phrase.

Catch phrase.
"All your base are belong to us" and "The cake is a lie" aren't catch phrases, as they aren't repeatedly used to identify a character or group of characters. The Chappell quote is a catchphrase though.

I disagree; they identify the people that say AYBABTU and that video which started it all, and Portal and those who have played it.

I'll conceed on AYBABTU, because the entire video consists of Cats repeatedly saying that, but you don't even know who was responsible for TCIAL, and even then, it occured once, and whomever was responsible for it wasn't even a featured character in Portal. The rapid vectors of new infection which resulted in its relatively wide use (when compared to the initial portion of the population exposed to it) also didn't identify that it was from Portal, at least half the people I knew who spewed that phrase didn't know where it was from, let alone played the game to that point. It's much more a meme than a catchphrase.

Incidentally, can I get this entire tangent split to OT or Testing, so we don't clutter up PSW?

Here it is. Force users can not defeat DBZ characters of any decent degree. In a universe where the average Z fighter (late DBZ) has the capability to AT WILL completely destroy and or render a planet or small orbital body uninhabitable (Piccolo in the beginning of DBZ, when they were their weakest in the series, destroyed the moon), easily generate multi KT and MT energy blasts (and absorb or not be killed by said blasts), move at super sonics speeds (running) and flying at the same speed, teleport, and lift mountains telekineticly (Goku did this after training with king kai) as a simple ability there is no chance at all for a jedi. The only place that might pose a threat from what I know is the 40k 'verse and even then only elder warp powers and possible the C'tan would even pose a threat.

I am the hammer, I am the right hand of my Lord. The instrument of His will and the gauntlet about His fist. The tip of His spear, the edge of His sword. I am His wrath just as he is my shield. I am the bane of His foes and the woe of the treacherous. I am the end.

This one went into the shitter easily.

As for the DBZ arguments, always nice to see a retard fanboy blurt out this shit....again. Fucking A, I thought at least we weeded that shit out.

For the Meme versus Fads? Truly a meeting of great minds over which to interpret.

Locking, because the poster who put this forward is a fucking moron.
