Without a doubt, I would have to say THE worst scifi book I have ever read was The America Zone (I can't remember the author, but he received the best libertarian science fiction award for The Probability Breach(by the way, what the hell is the "best libertarian Science fiction award"? I have never heard of it)

Its bad enough that the author has to PREACH his libertarian ideas to you(I swear, on at least half of all the pages of that book you will find at least one direct or indirect boosting of his libertarian utopia, and the resultant snotty snubbing of the real world) but the plot is godawful.

The characters in the book -both good and bad- are COMPLETELY two-dimensional. They are so flat that you could cut steel with them. The bad guys actually get to a good point of argument, but then the author screws it up by making them say something that would cause them to be seen as fundies or as communists, i.e. "Man is not fit in this world without acknowledging the domination of a supreme being". The plot is completely predictable and formulaic, with the "ooh, a disaster, what could it be? Could it be chaos within our society? Criminals? No, it can't be that; we are a utopia! It must be those crossovers who think that there are better forms of justice than dueling!" The bad guys do predictably worse things so that we can obviously discern that they are bad guys, and at the end everyone gets happy, and the author talks to us(through his protagonist's thoughts, but the author might as well be talking).

*theories based on spoilers*

. . . what the hell? book 10 and the white tower isnt burned to the ground? damned. . . I wanted it shattered, the seanchan on their knees, and the trollocs starting to swarm . . .
White Tower: Who's gonna do it? Rand can't because it would turn both Aes Sedai factions against him, and he needs them at The Last Battle. The AS have been dragging their feet because they know that any war will hurt the tower greatly, and they hope to resolve this some other way.

Seanchan: I agree, Rand should be more aggressive against them. 100 Asha'man conducting guerrilla operations behind the Seanchan lines would be a terror.
I wanted the white tower to break itself. the nice intro at the end of book 8, traveling to dragonmount. . . and no blood! no war! just traveling through more snow. . .gah.

100 asha'man was done, or close to, in book 7, methinks. 1000, now. that would be fun.

hey, empress! check this out! -BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM-
hehehe

as for left behind - the first 3 or 4 are reasonable, when the authors arent trying to write evil, their just writing disasters, and the heroes aren't chick.com characters.

books 7+ are drivel. I've written better.
