To be a cyborg yes or no
If you could become a cyborg would you taking into account the coolness factor: example: have a weapon storage locker in your right arm, and the less cool more BS factor: example: waring between you human and machine ideas and motives.
If this is the wrong forum sorry if possible could it be moved?

Re: To be a cyborg yes or no
In any sort of properly designed cybernetic parts you shouldn't have them trying to take you over. It'd simply be an arm of leg made out of metal and gears rather than flesh. There's no reason for it to have conciousness or anything else.russellb6666 wrote:If you could become a cyborg would you taking into account the coolness factor: example: have a weapon storage locker in your right arm, and the less cool more BS factor: example: waring between you human and machine ideas and motives.
And you can't get to much of the uber-wank attachments because you're still attaching it to a stock human. The organic bits and peices still have to be able to stand up to any stress put on them by the mechanical parts.
How bout brain in a jar, rest of the body robotic ?
Of course ... you have simulated nerve endings in all the right ... places.

'Cyborg' doesn't necessarily mean the vision of an unstoppable Inspector Gadget or something.
Personally, I wouldn't mind replacing any and all of the biological systems in my body except my central nervous system. To me, and most people, your body is just a constantly damaged and deteriorating canister for transporting your personality, intelligence and ego. Any improvements on that are welcome, but I don't need a stinger rocket launcher in my arm, or enchanced combat vision in my eyes, or a nuclear X-ray blaster affixed to my groin.
I think just more durable, simpler versions of existing biological systems would be fine. The fact that you can die from infection or damage to completely non-critical sections of the body (like the hands) is a serious design flaw. Couple that with a completely over-complex support system and a seemingly redundant mass of tissues, and you've got something that could be designed to be far simpler and more durable using artificial systems.

Yup basically my take on the issue- as I said in my totally non-eloquent fashionLagmonster wrote:'Cyborg' doesn't necessarily mean the vision of an unstoppable Inspector Gadget or something.

How long before the brain and central nervous tissue deteorate though?
Quite frankly, if they were to discover a way to transplant my 'self' into a machine (mechanical facsimilie of a human body, whatever) in my lifetime, I'd jump at the chance.

Hm cyborg as in the Bicentenial Man (I think that's what its called), when they develop artificial organs and stuff, wouldn't be so bad. As long as I don't have to go to the repair shop all the time...
Too bad we can't stop brain deterioration that way. I remember reading in When Gravity Fails (or the second book, don't remember) about an experimental procedure involving making some kind of superconducting or gold mesh around the brain, plus other changes, that would make it last a lot longer, like 200 years or so. (or at least a 50-100 year increase in lifespan)

I would do it, but on one condition. I want my senses not to be dulled or digitized in any way. It would be cool not to worry about glasses or contacts, but if it means I can make out the pixels in my new form of vision I'll deal with the organics.
I find it funny everybody talks about adding things to the cybernetic parts, but never makes mention of basic sense standards. Who cares how many pounds you can lift with your new cool arms if you can't hold an egg without crushing it because you have no sense of touch in your hands. You may be able to see in the IR spectrum, and telescopically, but if your vision looks like an old TV you still have lost something.

I wouldn't mind having what Warwick envisions as cyborgs. His dream is to add chips to the nervous system, allowing us to have an internal thought-activated computer and to essentially be telepathic with electronic systems. Full limb/organ replacement I would only consider for medical purposes, not for augmentation.

Brain Enchantements!
- Added or extended senses (e.g., seeing ultraviolet light).
- Increased working memory capacity.
- Mental calculator and database.
- Human / machine interface.
OR, I could just upload my mind into a supercomputer and become an AI capable of modifying my own code...

I'd use the technology to build a powered exoskeleton. Mosto f the functions you could get with cybernetics would be routed through that. I dislike the idea of opening up my mind to direct stimulation through implants, far to greta a risk of a code bug warping my mind.

Yeah, power armour for me too. Genetic engineering in the form of gene therapy is the max I'd go for myself, I prefer to stay totally organic and natural.Sea Skimmer wrote:I'd use the technology to build a powered exoskeleton. I'd only want some kind of eye implant that I could have different vision enhancements/targetting/finding/information on something... that'd be cool... and it done good know one would even know.

I'd get my hands replaced by bionic equivalents, much like the one that Luke Skywalker had, save for a few modifications...
1. Retractible claws on both hands, Wolverine style, except that there'd be 5 claws instead of 3, and they'd be steel instead of bone.
2. Computer as an improvement on my already impressive watch.
I'd get my eyes replaced, cuz my vision already sucks, and if I can see beyond 2 kilometres with out glasses, I'll be happy. Plus I'd have a self controlled function that allows me to see outside the normally visible spectrum at will, as well as active infrared sensors so I can see in the dark. And an Augmented Reality system, of course.
Perhaps have tiny repulsorlift devices installed in my feet, so I can jump really high and survive the landing with out injury.

It is not well for one to trifle in the affairs of the ancient Chinese generals, for they have a tendency to send armies of tens of thousands of warriors after those who challenge them.
Well... If it's Honorverse style cybernetics, i.e. invisible if you want it to be...
Then some would be nice. the bionic eye and the arm would be nice...

I prefer being part cyborg, part genetically enhanced. The whole body would be genetically enhanced, but with cybernetic senses and a quantum-computer for a brain. Muscles will be cybernetically improved, but not replaced. And I'd prefer an unbreakable skeleton.

I would like to get:
Cybernetic eyes(bio eng or mech, as long as it comes with a proj disp[RD: Neuromancer])
Neuro-Computer interface(Neuromancer, Mother of Storms, etc. basically instant learning, instant communication, instant everything as long as I am jacked in)
And if at all possible an energy gun from Futurama.
POP goes the weasel!

Forgot to mention.
Cyborg means anyone with unnatural attachements that operate to make the user at or above standard for human in ability to do certain things. Mostly mechanical but that will be changing rapidly over the next century.
So if you have glasses you are already a cyborg so stop complaining.

See, I always interpreted cybernetics as being permanent. Glasses can be removed at will, and are passive correction of eyesight. Besides, I still don't operate at or above standard. While my visual range with glasses returns to human norm, my depth perception is still well below norm (and I had normal depth perception before I started losing my eyesight).SyntaxVorlon wrote:Forgot to mention.
