Wii Zapper!

Post by Darth Fanboy »

For less than Twenty five bucks you get the "zapper" and you get the game "Link's Crossbow Training."

Bought one earlier this week, haven't played any other game since. Nintendo's official zapper kind of sucks in the aesthetics and practicality department to me, but I already had a 3rd party gun that I used for WiiPlay that aims and shoots a little more like a real gun and it makes the game much more fun to play. Even if you don't want the zapper, it's worth it just for the game.

Anyone else pick up this yet?

Yes, because gun accessories are just a gimmick and haven't been a part of console gaming since the original Zapper. Fucktard.

How much does it weigh? My main issue with the resident evil game is that holding my hands like an actual pistol is tiring and I can really do just as well therefore sitting and just doing small movements like a douche. ;D

If this thing is goodly accurate and weighs little, it'd be goodly useful. They need to make more rifle games so I'll be feeling fine holding it like a rifle. :D I feel silly holding my pistol with a shotgun grip.

The non-zapper version of the Wiimote play is, however, just MADE for a Star Trek Phaser game. I'm actually suprisingly accurate with the Phasermote.

Really? I thought I read somewhere that the Zapper died soon after it's release. Conceded, in any case.

When I played RE4, I played it like all Wii games: tiny movements using the cursor as feedback. Holding it out in front of you and crimping your wrist sounds crazy to me. :)

I've seen the cheapo third-party ones here, and they're quite chunky. I'd prefer something a bit slimmer myself, and something that kept the remote and the weight above the pistol grip and nt out in front of it.

You do have to admit that the zapper isn't quite as much of an improvement over the Wii-mote as the, say, Super Scope was over the SNES controller.

I liked aiming realistically, and still do it in short bursts, but cramping my wrist isn't any fun so I switched to a hands-in-lap wiimote waggling that was easier. I'm sure that if we filmed the sequence it'd be perfect for a film student freudian analysis.

From what I hear and what I've seen, the Wii-Zapper is absolute crap.

Hey I know, since it's the Wii and all, lets look at every single real world gun in the world, carefully exam how they do things, then do the opposite of it!

But don't take my word for it, look at this handy graphic about what's wrong with the Zapper

Not to mention that they appear to have placed several controls in the stock...

I would have to use one of these before considering purchasing it. My feeble earth brain cannot see a comfortable way to hold the thing without bits of it getting in the way or holding it on the off side of my body.

It is, The thing is almost impossible to line up with your eye to shoot. I think it was designed for lazy people to sit on the couch and let it rest in their lap.

However the game that it comes with is incredibly fun in my opinion and for twenty five bucks it's worth it just for the game.

In my OP I was talking about the 3rd party gun I bought that's much better, but I have heard many people say they just point the Wiimote without any gun at all and still have lots of fun.

There weren't as many games for the Zapper as I would have liked, but gun accessories have been around since the Zapper in various forms, not all have proven to be popular. And in this case, the "gimmick", is really just a piece of plastic that lets you hold the wiimote more like a gun.

That's the Wii Nunchuck.

EDIT:

Part of the reason for the poor design of the Wii Zapper is because the trigger on the zapper is just an "extension" of sorts of the trigger on the Wii Mote. And the other part might be related to the small statue of many of its users. My girlfriend can't use the gun that I use instead because it's too large.

But there's still no excuse. They could have easily made the trigger button part of the nunchuck and thus hand a trigger closer to where it should go.

Here's my gun. The trigger is still way up by the barrel, so it doesn't fire like a real gun, but it's more accurate to me, plus I kind of feel like Ash from Army of Darkness when I wave it around.

Here is how they should be made.

DF, that looks like John Malkovich's plastic gun from 'In the Line of Fire'. Badass.

P.S. The Superscope for Supernintendo was the most insane gun accessory ever.

Bullpups have a GRIP ahead of the trigger, that's the thing. Even the Bullpup's have a forward grip.

Not the zapper however, noo trigger goes on the front of the gun!

There's definitely better designs out there as aiming ergonomics go, but they all suffer from the same problem:

There's no lightgun game out there that lets you remap 'fire' to the Z button. There's nothing as useful as the new Guncon for the wii.

if you could remap, the CTA Red Laser Magnum would be lovely.

Image

But right now the best are simple wiimote attachments with a nunchuck passthrough, like this, but this has the disadvantage of still needing to manage the 'chuck with your off hand.

Image

What's needed for rifle-style games is something laid out like the MagPul PDR, if you could imagine putting the nunchuck controller under the barrel in place of the front grip.

There's also the Sharp Shooter, or 'Wii Lupara' as I call it since I saw it first when GISing the word 'lupara'. It looks nice, and it appears the Chuck's Z button acts as a trigger like Darwin's gun.

Oh baby, if they could make them like the lupara, it would be AWESOME. Just not in horrid safety orange. I know it's to make sure the cops don't shoot you when they raid your living room, but white guns are also kind of rare.

I like DF's gun with the nunchuk passthrough too, if that's the way you have to do it.
