Some new Black Library titles for next year revealed

Post by Dartzap »

BL
10/12/2007 : New Titles Announced!
The more observant of you out there will notice that we have updated the Coming Soon pages all to way out to January 2009! It’s an absolutely cracking period with some awesome highlights, the return of some old favourites and hopefully some welcome surprises too. Here’s a summary of just some of the headlines:

* Titanicus by Dan Abnett (Oct 08) - the Gaunt’s Ghosts and Horus Rising author turns his attention to the Titans, the vast mechanical war machines, in an epic new novel.
* Elfslayer by Nathan Long (Oct) - Gotrek & Felix continue their quest to thwart the powers of Chaos and the conniving Skaven in their latest blood-drenched adventure.
* Cain’s Last Stand by Sandy Mitchell (Nov) - is this the end for the wily Commissar Cain? Not if he has any say in it, that’s for sure!
* Horus Heresy: Mechanicum by Graham McNeill (Dec) - the action moves to Mars, as the servants of the Machine God must decide where their loyalties truly lie.
* Dark Disciple by Anthony Reynolds (Dec) - the Chaos Marines return in this sequel to our runaway hit of ‘07, Dark Apostle.
* Time of Legends: Malekith by Gav Thorpe (Jan 09) - the third strand of the Warhammer series, following our Sigmar and Nagash titles, moves the focus to the ancient Elf legend of the Sundering.
Next year looks like its going to be great. New Cain novel! Woohoo! And we heresy-era novel about the AdMech, that only be nifty. And Titans by Abnett... yeah. i think I'm fixed for nifty books for next year, heh.

What happened to the stories from the contest? Is that out already?

Now now, before all this stuff comes out we have new...: Space Wolves, Ultramarines, Grey Knights, Word Bearers and several anthologies :) No need to go nuts just yet! And I don't even read the WHF stuff, so even if I run out of 40K, I have a huge amount of stuff to look at :D

I stopped reading when I read "Cain's Last Stand."

Mostly because I was jumping up and down with unrestrained glee at the prospect of a new Cain book.

Unfortunately it also includes the combination of "McNeill" and "Titans", which is a rather sore point. Anyone whose read the Heresy Novels and Dark Apostle, compare the descriptions of the supposed Imperitor Class in the Heresy Books with the one in Dark Apostle and you'll see why I've decided that the one in the Heresy, isn't actually an Imperitor

Excellent, the next installation of the Horus Heresy books is going to be about intrigue taking place on Mars! Definately got to get that there, I think.

No, I think the words "forty-three meters tall" in reference to the Dies Irae would be why.

Along with "140 meters" and Storm of Iron specifying that it's an Imperator?
Why wonder why? The answer is simple: obviously, someone somewhere decided that he or she needed Baby Jesus up the ass.

Then there are the other features of an Imperator which the Dies Irae is lacking but the Apostle one wasn't, such as leg bastions filled with troops, Void Shields and multiple secondary weapons such as battle cannon and siege gun emplacements.

It survives a Virus bomb exterminatus, this isn't something I would have a problem with myself for most superheavies..

The biggest WTF moment I've ever had with BL fiction is when I read the first chapter of False Gods and discovered the Imperium had apparently discovered shrink ray technology.

I always thought the 40 metre size was more accurate. Certainly, it's closer to the scale size of the miniature, and fits in with other information from various GW publications.

And given the preponderance of other figures, McNeill's numbers for the Dies Irae put it as shorter than most Warlord Titans (Annihilation Squad, Hereticus and Iron Hands all having >40m tall Warlords; there are probably more examples to be located).

As the nice fellow above has pointed out, not only is this the exact same titan that was 3 times as large one book previously, its also smaller than Warlord Titans which Mcneil wrote about in Storm of Iron.

Hence, WTF ?

As far as it fitting with the scale size of the miniature, the Imperator titan on my desk isn't exactly 20 times the size of epic scale marines.

Titan scale is utterly fucked in 40k unless you sling out/retcon hugetastic quantities of artwork, dozens of references in literature etc.

Thank fuck there was only one Imperator model!

Design wise Epic stuff in general suffers from horrific stupidities in the name of "rule of cool" which don't help either.

Haven't read Storm of Iron, so I'll concede on grounds of ignorance. Obviously, I've not been paying as much attention to Connor's threads here as I thought I had. However, the information in 3 editions and counting of Epic rulebooks has always gone with the Emperor titans being about 40m tall. Certainly, my model is about 6" high, which is within the ballpark, if not an exact 1/300 scale model (if it were supposed to be 140m tall, it'd be pushing 18" high).

If titans have been retconned in the novels to be bigger than this, I suppose I'll have to get used to it :)
