Bus Attack Investigated As Hate Crime

BALTIMORE (AP) — Transit officials said they are investigating the beating of a white woman by nine black middle school students on a city bus as a possible hate crime.

Sarah Kreager, 26, suffered broken facial bones and other injuries after she was punched, kicked and dragged off the bus Tuesday afternoon. Kreager's companion, Troy Ellis, also was beaten, but not as severely.

"We are at this point investigating it as a hate crime," said Maryland Transit Administration spokeswoman Jawauna Greene.

The students — three girls and six boys 14 to 15 years old — have been charged with aggravated assault and destruction of property.

The students, who ride the bus to school, have been released into the custody of their parents, Greene said. Their bus privileges were revoked.

MTA Northern District Capt. David Marzola said the students also are accused of menacing an elderly white passenger and assaulting the bus operator, a black man who defended the passenger.

"He probably saved this gentleman's life," Marzola said.

The driver was not identified because he is considered a witness to a crime, the MTA said.

MTA police said evidence has not been found to support claims by the students' parents that Kreager or Ellis provoked the attack by spitting or displaying a knife. Green said no child reported any spitting or a knife at the time reports were taken.

Video from a surveillance camera on the bus is being analyzed as part of the investigation, the MTA said.

I can't WAIT to see these little shits tried as adults. There's no possible explanation other than 'They're violent antisocial pricks' for why they'd do that.

... Where does the article say anywhere that the woman was a teacher? It states that the kids were students, attacking a white woman on a bus. It makes zero mention of her being a teacher.

Something very similar to this happened in Seattle, but in that case the bus driver "didn't see" the assault. The bus company was successfully sued and just lost a civil case.

The story is, in its own way, a statement on the sad state of the City of Baltimore. The more gentrified the Inner Harbor becomes and the more hyper-rich enclavesdevelop the more the rest of the city has fallen into a literal cesspit. There is no excuse for these kids but Christ the crime rates in Baltimore are killing off peope at catastrophic levels while STDs rank Baltimore in the top 5 in nearly every deadly variant for infeciton rate while drugs are practically flowing on the streets. The city right now is like a caricature of the worst days of the 80s crack boom. Only people are dying from it and there is no relief, economic or otherwise, on the horizon.

Increasingly in Sydney, more and more buses are having video cameras installed. But bloody hell, kids passing knives around openly...the school bus has sure changed since I road it...

So are ours. We don't have dedicated school buses, just city buses that school kids ride

I believe that in Urban areas(If high school in SF was anything to go by) city buses are used for school transportation, but middle and grade school used "school" school buses.

That's exactly how it worked in Pittsburgh Public. We had school buses for elementary and middle (though I walked to my elementary), and our high schools gave us a monthly bus pass to get to and from school.

Ironically, for the asshole thugs in our schools, those monthly bus passes were very attractive things to mug people over. Of course, Pittsburgh is considerably less crime ridden and neglected than inner city Baltimore is, which is a somewhat scary place. You get the occasional jackass youth trying to look hard in front of his friends on the buses here, but usually they do thinks like flick someone with a gumband and run back to their seat. The last time I saw this they did this to this older black gentleman, who ended up grabbing the kids wrist and smacked him across the skull while telling him to have some sense and that if he did it again he would get a beating*. This was unfortunate, because the bus ride ended up having to get stopped because the brat and his little hood friends threw such a ruckus that the old guy dared attack them that bus driver had to stop and kick them off the bus.

*(this fellow apparantly being the real life incarnation of Grampa Freeman, complete with the slight southern accent and mentioning his belt. Sometimes life is stranger and better than fiction.)

This has happened with school buses here, too. Not sure about city buses.

Every once in awhile there's an incident of students attacking the driver or some such, and it's all conveniently captured on tape for the prosecution.

College Park is a suburb of Washington and is all but totaly seperate from the ills that plauge that city. Now that isn't to say its perfect living because PG county is one of the more dangerous places in Maryland (which admittedly isn't saying MUCH but still). WMATA (or Metro to us Baltimore/Washintonians) runs a much tighter, and infinitely larger, ship than MTA (Maryland Transit). Metro buses tend to be much newer, better run, more frequent, and better monitored by local, state, federal, and agency police while Metro Rail is the second largest and arguably best policed local rail tranist system in the nation. So simply put in College Park you have to worry more about stupid washouts who use the University as an excuse to do stupid shit because "rowdy college kids" will get the blame before 35 year old unemployed hanger ons.

Addressing a seperate point the City of Baltimore does have actual School Buses but not nearly in the numbers needed to facilitate moving all of the students in the system. Thus in conjunction with the MTA they issue student bus passes that enable them to ride for free on the existing commuter and intra-city bus network MTA runs in Baltimore and the surrounding counties. In turn with a city like Baltimore the students are generally from poorer families than in the suburbs, come from a higher percentage of broken homes with crime skyrocketing around them and nobody able to afford to stay home if they want to be able to put food on the table. In such circumstances it is almost unbelievable that more of them aren't caught for aggressive and criminal behavior.

College Park itself is starting to get very unsafe. A lot of the townies from PG county are moving closer and closer as they're getting pushed north from Capitol Heights (Which I still can't believe you wanted to look at a house in) and Hyattsville. My brother refused to leave campus to bars and parties his senior year(last year) because of all the violent incidents along Rt. 1. As for Baltimore, you said it all man.
