Jodie Foster Come Out

Post by General Deathdealer »

Jodie Foster has publicly confirmed she is a lesbian. The Hollywood star paid tribute to "my beautiful Cydney" as she accepted an award from entertainment magazine the Hollywood Reporter at Los Angeles' Beverly Hills Hotel last week, the first time she has made reference to her relationship with film producer Cydney Bernard, her reported girlfriend of 15 years.
Picking up the prize as the guest of honour at the magazine's Women in Entertainment Power 100 breakfast last Tuesday (04.12.07), Jodie said: "I would like to thank my beautiful Cydney, who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss."

It has long been rumoured that Foster is gay, but the 'Silence of the Lambs' star has always refused to discuss her sexuality.

During her speech at the annual event, the two-time Oscar winner also revealed she "doesn't have a clue what she's doing".

She said: "I feel fragile, unsure, struggling to figure it all out.

"I don't feel powerful, I feel like I haven't got a clue what I'd doing."

The 45-year-old actress added: "Maybe that's the secret of my success, but you can't work in this industry for 42 years without being as nutty as a fruitcake."

Jodie has two sons - Charles, nine and Kit, six - but has always refused to talk about their father.
Looks like she has confirmed the rumors. I say good for her as long as she is happy. I have always liked her as an actress (she is kind of hot).

Good for her. She shouldn't have had to keep it secret for fifteen years or more, but better late than never.

Ah, but 15 years ago society was not nearly as accepting of these things as it is now. Even less so than that 25 years ago when she would have been a young adult and probably struggling with her sexuality.

This also makes Hinckley's shooting of Reagan in order to impress her even more sad and pathetic.

But - if she's happy good for her, for them both. I am looking forward to a day when homosexuality is no more of an issue than whether a person is right or left handed.
A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. Leonard Nimoy.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

Perhaps that wasn't quite clear from my wording - it's sad that she felt she couldn't come out with this for over fifteen years, not that she kept it to herself.
Wait, that was supposed to be a secret?
Publicly acknowledging it is still a big step. It shouldn't be, but it is.

You're young. Gaydar doesn't come in until later in life.

Hell, I'm no spring chicken and I didn't know. The reason: I don't care who strangers fuck. Seriously, she can fuck any consenting person she wants, at the same time, if she feels like it, and it's still neither by business, interest, or problem.

What does one have to do with the other? I don't give a fuck who she bangs either but I still knew, well, strongly believed, she was a lesbian.

I honestly had no clue. Though I haven't watched many of her movies, or seen a lot of her on television.

I always thought that Jodie Foster looked attractive, but there was something about the way she carried herself that threw me off. Also, her voice has a sort of mushy quality to it (muddled consonants) which annoys me. But it never occurred to me to question whether she was hereto or homo.

Does it really matter what their sexual orientation is when it comes to talent? Tom Cruise is almost certainly gay (I know, I know, it's only an opinion) and I love his movies and don't give two shits when he plays opposite a woman in a romantic scene because he's talented and I like his style. Same with Foster. I'm certainly not going to skip out on a movie because the lead is (gasp) gay.

And if people would do that, fuck 'em for being the ignorant savages that they are.

I think a lot of the hostility toward Tom Cruise stems from the fact that a lot of people don't really like his work all that much. I know I've never been a big fan of his, although I liked The Last Samurai. MI-2 left me almost ready to physically vomit, it was so fucking wanked and stupid. The problem with Cruise is that he's a bit like Kevin Costner in the sense that he tries too hard to manage his on-screen persona for maximum "hero" factor. He takes himself too seriously. And of course, the whole Scientology thing really bothers people, although it's pretty sad how massively hypocritical Christians can be about Scientology ("hey look everyone, a stupid cult we can poke fun at because it makes scientifically nonsensical claims ... unlike ... creationism, which is ... totally ... well, science is overrated anyway").

If you look at Ian McKellan, everybody really does like his work, so almost nobody cares about the fact that he's gay.

Considering the hornets' nest that was stirred up when Ellen DeGeneres, I can understand why Foster would be reluctant to come out.

I was a toddler 25 years ago. How badly widespread was homophobia then?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

It's been an 'open secret' for several years that Foster is a lesbian.
Doris Day [who was often the romantic lead opposite Rock Hudson (well known leatherboy)] was also gay.
In regard to the topic of Tom Cruise - I think he is a very good actor, but often appears in bad movies (but also in some very good ones).

Well...

When my older sister came out in the late 1970's she (and her partner) had bricks thrown through their apartment windows, the tires on their cars slashed, anonymous death threats over the phone and stuffed into their mailboxes, and, oh yes, abuse heaped on them in public. But overall, they were considered to have it good because neither was disowned by her family, no one actually set fire to anything of theirs, and neither was physically assaulted - all of which occurred to various homosexuals they knew both in and out of the closet. At the time, the police tended to turn a blind eye to such crimes because if those people didn't act like faggots or live a perverted lifestyle bad things like that wouldn't happen to them, ya know? It was perfectly legal and acceptable to deny people housing based on their sexuality, or to summarily fire people for being homosexual. Indeed, it was expected and often applauded to do such things.

By they way - they lived in a relatively liberal and progressive college town. In most other areas of the country there was a great deal more hostility towards homosexuals.

It's funny how disconnected youngsters can be about the recent past. I remember kids being beaten to a pulp at school for seeming "faggy", even if there was not a shred of real evidence that they were actually homosexual. And this was in Toronto, which is pretty much one of the leading centres of gay acceptance in North America.

Strangely enough, if you keep going back you eventually reach a point, around 1900 I think, where being a closeted gay is accepted in practice. As a rule if you kept it quiet nobody bothered you, even if it was something of an open secret.

Just out of curiosity, what made people think she was a lesbian? I never knew anything about her, and only could place her as an actress and think of some movies she was in. What was the tipoff? Did you have to read up on her personal life or something?

Nothing like that. I don't read about celebrities or take an active interest in their personal lives. It was just something I *knew* which I erroneously believed to be common knowledge. Bugger if I know where I learned it, though. But I seriously didn't know she was supposed to be closeted.
