Remember, South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in the run-up to the Civil War, and they had nearly seceded thirty years before that, too. Today, they're proud of having done that.

He's a Southern Baptist Minister, I imagine that has something to do with it.

Where to start...

As others have said, what isn't wrong. It along with more then a few states in that area define the Deep South, with all the bad notions and absolutely inane shit.

If a married couple from South Carolina get divorced, are they still cousins? (rimshot)

(Somewhat) seriously, I'm not sure that the age of consent is a reasonable barometer for whether or not its residents are hicks -- Canada's age of consent is 14.

Huckabee is a hick minister from the south. He'd probably get more votes from the bible belt by simply saying god wants him to be president, rather than promoting policy which may sound reasonable to the voter with a half a brain.

If Huckabee gets the Republican nomination and then proceeds to get squished flat by the Democratic nominee, might it reduce the perceived/actual influence that these southern church people have, both in votes and influence?

I can't think of a worse way to present ourselves to the rest of the world.

Ladies and Gentlement, President Huckabee.

That just sounds so wrong on so many different levels. Yeargh.

In fairness to South Carolina, Huckabee is also doing really well here in Iowa and in New Hampshire, so I don't think it's entirely fair to single SC out.

He looks pretty unelectable against even a Democratic empty suit though, so I suppose there are worse things than Huckabee winning the nomination. Giuliani, for example. As Hawkwings pointed out, his defeat in the general election could help marginalize the Christian right as a coherent political force in the US.

One can hope, anyway.

latest Rasmussen poll has Huckabee leading FLORIDA. He also has leads in Iowa and SC and is tied for the lead in Michigan. Only NH seems to be resisting the lure of the Huck.

at this rate itll be Huck verses Obama come November.

I would not mind that election one bit. In fact, that's pretty much what I'm hoping for.

In other words, why are you surprised? In recent years, and especially since the "butterfly ballot" fiasco, Florida has gained a reputation as the laughingstock state of the US.

These primaries are a joke anyway. Whoever wins the first 3-4 primaries gets the nomination on the grounds of the vast majority of voters everywhere else in the country saying:
Lemming with a Ballot wrote:"Yeah, I heard of him. He was on the news winning an election. I guess I'll vote for him."
Then they all jump on the bandwagon.
