Moderate your diet and you can either be one of the 450,000 that either got away Scott free or died of something else prior to getting diagnosed or be one of the 40,000 in their study that would have developed Cancer anyway.

Really, what we're lacking at the moment is effective cancer screening via genetic test. If I knew my chances for colorectal cancer were amazingly slim, I could eat a higher amount of red meat and be okay. Right now we're grappling with the idea that everything can contribute to one cancer or another with no idea of how to assess our own cancer risks.

Uh... OK, too much iron is bad... but not enough iron is ALSO bad, you know, anemia and stuff like that. This is either taken wildly out of context or these guys are very sloppy.
Yeah, my doc generally tells me to eat more red meat. You can get iron from dark greens, but you need to eat a whole lot more to equal the amount of iron in a small serving of red meat and then it's in a form that the body doesn't metabolise nearly as well.

I've found some iron supplements that don't make me feel like I'm going to throw up. I need to get them marketed in Norway somehow....

The change to your individual risk of getting cancer depending on whether you eat red meat is pretty insignificant. The findings are really only useful from an epidemiogical stand point. You're much more likely to run into heart or obesity issues before cancer becomes as issue.

For me when I was in Japan their portions of meat were tiny, to the point tey did nothing. Also keep in mind that I massed 1/3rd more than the average there.

American's arn't just fat, alot are just big otherwise.

I degrees, anyways:

red meat on average is cheaper than fowl of any kind, at least were I am, and though I love pork, beef is typically cheaper.

I'd prefer venison, but, I simply cant get it on a regular basis.

Oh yeah, fresh veggies are expensive.

My wife hates beef, so accordingly, I only eat it rarely--usually when we go out. Before I got married, though, forget about it, beef and I were tight.

Honestly, though, you can substitute ground turkey for ground beef in a lot of recipes and not notice it. I still enjoy chili, meatballs, tacos, etc. but it's all turkey.

Rather than bury our heads in the sand or fuck around with qualitative excuses to continue our behaviour, it would probably be better to recognize that a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and fish can counteract the negative effects of red meat (in fact, the study found that red meat eaters who ate fish every other day pretty much eliminated that 1/3 colo-rectal cancer risk increase). Of course, eating fish every other day implies that you choose that over red meat, so you're still cutting back on your red meat consumption. But 6 ounces of red meat per day really isn't all that much by American standards, although it's quite generous by world standards.

In my personal cooking I use 4 oz of red meat as a portion. Actually, the same for fish or chicken or any animal protein. The balance is vegetable, fruit, and grain, which is probably how we're supposed to be eating.

OK, once or thrice a year I go out and have a 12 oz steak (and maybe I'll finish it). But indulging a couple times a year won't hurt you, either. It's how you eat 9 days out of 10 that makes the big difference.

I don't think I eat even 6 oz. of meat per week these days. There was a period last year when my meat consumption spiked way higher than that due to costs and during that time I was looking for any alternative. Fortunately, it's back down now.
