How Likely?

Post by SirNitram »

Alright, I'm getting the writing hankering again, and I'm wondering if anyone thinks the society I'm proposing is ridiculous(I'm well aware most sci-fi societies that deviant signifigantly from reality tend to be ridiculous, but I like to know how much).

Base government: Theocracy.

Tech level: Split. Normal tech level is early medieval. Multiple remnants of higher tech level exist, and are maintained by religious rituals that have grown from the original maintence directions(The cleaning of the computer's circuits is now the Holy Cleansing Of The All Seeing Mind). 'Cloning'(Actually a computer selecting genetic codes to combine and grow in a tube until passing toddler ages), simple energy weapons(Referred to as 'magic' by most observing, because let's face it, a blast of energy from a device looks like a wizard and his wand), simple AI.

The society is largely made up of humans bred by careful selection from the priest caste, who take samples in a highly-ritualized ceremony from both parents. Sex is flatly outlawed to most people(The repressive Catholic mentality, and a chance to finally get rid of sex without stopping procreation), and having more than two children is a crime that results in the death of the unauthorized child, and forced labour for the parents.

The nation is situated in a region surrounded by predators powerful enough to result in severe attrition if they get careless(They're dragons, in fact. Short lived, huge beasts which eat everything up to minerals to fuel their intense metabolism), hence the careful population controls.
Manic Progressive: A liberal who violently swings from anger at politicos to despondency over them.

Out Of Context theatre: Ron Paul has repeatedly said he's not a racist. - Destructinator XIII on why Ron Paul isn't racist.

The idea of a theocracy is possible, it still exists. And there are still some signs that if the US gets too fundamentalist it may turn into one. With people like Pat Buchanan and Jerry Falwell and Jesse Helms out and about proclaiming that the United States is a christian nation subverted by EVIL secularists(Not naming them, like Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, Adams, etc.). The idea is not as far fetched but dragons? Please try and keep things realistic, there is no reason to make it fanciful as Islamic fundamentalists run most countries with heavy Islamic presense. This happens because Islam has had, and seriously resists, secular power.

Drop the dragons... They eat rocks?

Or, the poor humans "think" they're dragons (much like the legends of sea-creatures during the 16th Century), but instead, they are powerfull AI's running loose...

You can have my dragons when you pry the pen from my cold, dead hands.

The rock-eating is mostly breaking down damn near anything to fuel their extreme energy requirement. Obviously, carbon is the much preferred means.. Which means they'll eat an entire village if it's made of wood.

Very similar, 40.000 years ago the 4th Empire was fucked over really hard by a super virus only known survivors was this one planet that went totally insane from listening and seeing the other planets die, they destroyed almost all technology except the orbital defense grid, which they thought was God.

It's a really GOOD book, it's nr. 3 in the Dahak series, the first one "Mutineer's moon" is aviable to read for FREE at www.baen.com
The two other books you must buy, but they rock.
