Zero tolerance in schools claims another victim

Post by CaptainChewbacca »

An elementary student in Marion County was arrested Thursday after school officials found her cutting food during lunch with a knife that she brought from home, police said.

The 10-year-old girl, a student at Sunrise Elementary School in Ocala, was charged possession of a weapon on school property, which is a felony.

According to authorities, school employees spotted the girl cutting her food while she was eating lunch and took the steak knife from her.

The girl told sheriff's deputies that she had brought the knife to school on more than one occasion in the past.

Students told officials that the girl did not threaten anyone with the knife.

The girl was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
Seems to me the police in town don't have enough to do. "You want us to arrest who? For doing what? *CLICK*"

Zero tolerance isn't an excuse to not use critical thinking. Do school administrators get lobotomized out of practice now?

This is really sad. I remember when I was in 5th grade I brought a genuine swiss army knife to school and showed it to EVERYONE. Even some teachers thought it was cool, and one showed it to his class. Only when one was nervous I might threaten students with it was it suggested I keep it out of sight till I went home.

This is crap. If the girl is eating food with the damn thing than let her be. Christ are all parents, administrators, and people in general fucking pussies? OMG teh likkle gurl kutz da meetz wid a ka-niff!! EEEKK! I'd sad how pussified the western world is becoming. It's like they've all lost their gonads.

Sometimes I wonder. Is it a senior bureaucrat's preference for the rules being folled 100% without question, since that's the basis of their authority? An ambitious man/woman's desire to avoid black marks on their record through vigorous if idiotic enforcement? Is it fostered by a culture of paranoia due to the isolated cases of school violence and an overriding desire to not be "the one" - the principle, the teacher - who has a public and media-catching act of school violence happen on their watch?

As it is, I'm very sure that the principal and those responsible won't get in as much trouble for this as they would've if the girl had brought the knife to school to stab someone with. And when that is considered, it's clear that the parents are as much to blame as anyone else. Unless it's their kid or a friend's kid, the parents don't care since it, superficially, is a sign of the school being "safe" for their kids, and they won't make the kind of fuss en masse that would provoke a change in attitude.

At least, that's how it seems to me.

I would say that the school is not entirely wrong in not wanting steak knives, which can be pretty dangerous, being wielding by students, regardless of whether the intent is completely benign. The problem with zero tolerance is disproportionate punishment. The school could have confiscated the knife, told the girl her parents could come pick it up, and let the parents know the girl would get in trouble if she brings a knife again.

Just wondering; are children allowed to bring pencil compasses ? Those things are probably even nastier than a knife.

In Ontario starting in Grade 4 kids need a geometry set. Which includes a pencil compass.

But see, its not a KNIFE!, with is something dangerous that a news organization can plaster on the tv screen- a dangerous KNIFE! in schools near the CHILDREN!

Yeah, the thing with zero tolerance for weapons is that lots of things- compasses, pens, a stick, can be weapons but, they don't have this stupid stigma of being dangerous, like a KNIFE!.

You mean they're not forced to use those useless plastic safety compasses?

I don't think so. The equipment list says "geometry set", I looked at some in August and they had the metal compass with a slot for mechanical pencil lead and the standard metal needle. The list says nothing about safety compasses, in fact I've never seen one.

Ha! Life imitating art?
There was a commercial for KFC where a lady in an office starts freaking out and yelling the "Jane" has a knife!!!!" The manager gets over to her cubical and she is cutting her lunch up. "It's just lunch people!!" He yells.

Wow. Way to totally traumatize a 10 year old girl. What ever happened to taking the knife and calling the parents? Or detention? No, do not pass go, go directly to jail!

No, it means you're "tough on crime". Because "good judgment" has been replaced with "toughness" as the ultimate arbiter of quality leadership. It's schoolyard rules.

Nope. Too dangerous.

See, I could understand if someone brought a ka-bar or something to school, and was brandishing it in the hallways.

My school? My band teacher and most of the percussionists have pocketknifes and matches with them, in their backpacks. And they use them quite often for maintaining the instruments.

Talk about a fucking stupid letter. And why does it read "a(n) Detention"? It's not like the use of "a" versus "an" for words beginning with "d" is a point of grammatical contention. And why is "detention" capitalized? And the incident description lists the program as "Foxfire", not "Firefox". And how many times can they use the word "consequence" in a line?

Kind of funny considering that I convinced our school librarian to install Firefox on all library computers at our school.

The student was sent to detention for disobeying a teacher after being warned twice. Yes, the teacher needs to lighten up, but that kid needs to do as told.

yeah, he was told twice and he refused. He could have complied and tried to inform his teacher later about Firefox, if he really felt the need to use it. This is not really in the same league as the OP article.

The steak knife is not a good idea to bring to school, but arresting a 10 year old girl, who doesn't realize this, is also a poor idea. IF she had been threatening someone, then arrest would make sense, but she was cutting her food. I wonder how a plastic knife would be reacted to by this school....

It's probably a generic form letter, where a less careless person would have changed 'a(n)' to 'a' or 'an' depending on what punishment was given. The punishment was probably typed as an answer to a query, and carelessly capitalised there.
