My kids have gone their divergent ways on this. David says he misses Fuzzy, and he thinks that getting another dog will make him feel better. Matthew, on the other hand, thinks that getting another dog would be a really bad idea, and he doesn't want another dog for a long time.
I think Matthew is right, Mike. Not only will having another dog around in and of itself just remind you that the dog you have now ISN'T Fuzzy, there's the fact that it'll not be housebroken, may not be a lap dog, etc. etc. etc. . My advice for now is to let everything settle down for a bit. Maybe get david a bird or something to keep his mind off of Fuzzy...or a skunk. Skunks have the advantage of being loving, unusual, and fun!

Well, it's been two weeks now since he died. It no longer feels like an open wound, but it still feels like there's a big void in our lives. I still find myself looking for him in the places where he's supposed to be. So here's a brief picture history of my little fuzzy guy's life, for posterity:

Image
1994: This was Fuzzy as a puppy. He was just unbearably cute.

Image
1995: Hey, what's that? Did Mommy bring home a new friend for me?

Image
The teddy bear must die!

Image
Ooh! Oooh! Treat!

Image
1996: As Matthew started to crawl around the house, he and Fuzzy became best friends.

Image
They were inseparable.

Image
1997: The two of them hatched a plan. Matthew would grab food off my plate when I was eating, and then he would give it to Fuzzy.

Image
Fuzzy even kept him company when he slept.

Image
Fuzzy demonstrates his devastating face-licking attack.

Image
Hey, what's that? It smells good.

Image
When I came home from work, they used to sit by the door and wait for me.

Image
1998: Time to welcome David to the world. My family is now complete.

Image
Goodbye, little guy. You were the best.

I just saw this thread. My family had a series of dogs as I was growing up, and in the end all of them died -- one of age, one of cancer, and one of some jackass's hunting rifle. It's always difficult; at their best, dogs are an optimistic, playful, and faithful part of the family. So please accept my belated condolences for your loss; he'll always live on in your hearts.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

You've done a great job of showing how Fuzzy was there as your family grew, and was a part of it. You can't do much better than that to show how important he was.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Were you planning on getting one of those video frames that displays different pictures for the Fuzzy memorial?

I'm very sorry...

We had a lot of dogs and other assorted pets, and everytime one passed away, I cried like a baby. Thought it changes with time, but it doesn't... Well, thinking about it, I feel about to cry right now...

Our French bulldog passed away last night as well. He was getting bad of old age lately but it still came as a bit of a shock. One of the best dogs we've ever had :(

I'm so sorry to hear that. Dogs become such a part of our families and ourselves. When Fuzzy died, it felt like a piece of me died with him.

I don't think I've fully realised he's gone yet. When I came home I was still expecting him to do his daily greet untill I realised he's dead. It'll propable won't be the last time.

Some things I'll remember him for:

- always cheerfull & playfull. Every stranger was met as if he was the long lost son coming home
- he always "mummified" himself by burrying himself under his blanket in his blanket and strapping it on real tight untill you got some kind of sausage-dog. Quite a show to observe and I still don't know how he could breathe under there.
- always wanted company (untill the last days, but animals are known to seek a place to die alone), especially from my mother.

The most recent pictures:

I wish I had pictures of poor miss goldie...

She was such a good dog, keeping me and my bros out of trouble and being a good watchful beta female caring for her adopted "Cubs"...

Damn it, and like most of my family it was CANCER that got her too....

oh and for the complete list...

Goldie (F, Retriever, Bozo's sister)
Bozo (M, Retriever, goldie's brother)
Toucan (I wanted a pirate bird, I got a Mutt dog, M)
Howlie (F, unknown mix)
Frumius Bandersnatch (M, unknown mix)
Argon (M, Tabby, named after a rubber proof gas, re how the previous 4 died)
Josh (M, Springer Spaniel, too crazy to live)
Pippin (M, Siamese evil little fuck)
Mary (F, Siamese, also like her brother an evil little fuck)
Blue (M, Collie, old age)
Rufus (M, Bob Marley Cat, old age) <spent his whole life overeating and rolling in catnip, with long fur so unkempt that it formed kitty dreadloks...>

oh, and I just Realized that my "porn name" would thus be "Goldie Highway" <yes my parent's first home was in fact just off highway 99.

Wautd and Mike, my condolences to each of you.

I'm going through the same situation myself. Luka, our collie of 13 years, had to be put down on the 30th of November last. Myself and my brother, 28 and 30, drove into the Pet Vet to do it and cried afterwards. The worst thing is that our nephews and nieces of 6-9 years old will be asking where the dog is, when they visit over Christmas, and I have no idea what we will tell them. I can't say that he was sent to a great farm in the countryside, because our house IS on a great farm in the countryside.

At least I had the time to prepare myself (Mike's seem to have died pretty sudden from what I've read). Jules was healthy his whole life, but the last 3 months he got a lot of serieus complications in a row. He always came out fine again, but we all realised probably wouldn't reach the new year.

I hope he died in his sleep
