Seriously it is really sad that the most technilogically advanced nation on the Earth is also just as bad in some ways as some of the most backward countries on issues concerning sexuality. Religion is insidious and pervasive. What's sad is that so many people are taught religious rote as their sole means of moral guidance, and when it fails them, they're lost because they can't decide for themselves what is a decent ethic system.

It basically goes back to my favorite bitchfest, arbitrary age of responsibility. The idea that there is a 'magic age' when a person becomes responsible enough to do certain things, like driving. This idea is idiotic at its base.

Take the average car insurance company. They tend to drop your rates after you turn 25, because more accidents tend to happen before that age. Its actually not because your actually more responsible, its that a lot of the real morons have already killed themselves off by that age.

What we need is to take control of the process of being an 'adult'. We need to work out a way to test for the mental and emotional maturity necessary to be considered an adult and take responsibility for ourselves and our actions. Until 'adulthood' is proven, no driving, no drinking, no children.

Enough of my personal soapbox, back on topic.

The idea of 'Teaching Abstinence' relies on a false premise, that in some previous age people actually practiced it. Its complete bullshit, the 'when I was your age' years when no one was fucking are a myth. But years ago no one talked about it. Betsy got knocked up, get the shotgun its time for a wedding. Or if she's young enough, time for her 'vacation' and the birth of her new 'sibling'. You cannot force abstinence into someone. Those who succeed at simply abstaining do so through A. Personal choice, or B. Lack of options.

As for abstinence only lies... dont get me started. When I was a freshman in high school they tried to pull that shit. First they told us that condoms were ineffective and that HIV could pass through them. Then they tried to tell us that porn and masturbation would make us rapists and child molesters to which I responded "The reason every rapist and child molester looks at porn is not because porn causes it. It is because very guy looks at porn. You are putting the cart before the horse"

Of course teaching this crap to kids is just out of the fucking question; screwing up your own life like that is bad enough, but a child?

Well no one listens and fucks anyway, and most people figure it out except for the extremely devout lunatics (for whom these policies are for) who also get it from their peer group (coerced into being uniformly religious fanatics) and church officials. So they tend to jump in having unprotected anal sex and unprotected sex in general when they do when it finally happens. Abstinence-only is mostly about getting the government to publically-aid fundies in keeping their children completely isolated and protected from reason and reality so they'll keep toeing the fundie line. Same thing as ID or "teach the debate"; they're terrified of their kids being educated with a factual POV that adds any dissent to their ideological input.

Heard on the radio this morning during the "headlines" that Britney's little sister Jamie Lynn is pregnant. They also mentioned that she's 16 and her boyfriend is 19 and that they've been together for 3 years. Now, normally I would have laughed (which I did) and then let this fade into the dark recesses of my memory, never to be thought of again. (I also disparaged their parents, well, parenting but that's another discussion)

Why is this relevant? According to the radio, they met at church. Now, this may be a little leap, but they're from Louisiana, they met in church and now she's pregnant. I'm not normally a betting man but ten'll get you twenty that somewhere in that whole mess we're going to find abstinence only sex education.

You won't believe how shocked I was when I heard for the first time that a lot of the goddamned doctors in the US didn't know much about foreskins, other than that it's something you cut off an infant's penis. The state of US sexual education sometimes strikes me as incredibly mangled, even amongst people who should be educated about it.

I mean, Jesus...Poland is a socially conservative, ovewhelmingly catholic country, and children here get to know the basics about sexuality, contraception, the menstrual cycle, intimate hygene and such in 6th grade.

Sixth. Fucking. Grade. And, somehow, our rates of teen pregnancy aren't higher than in the US. I mean, whoa. Shocking, right? We must be dirty brainwashed commies.

The very phrase "abstinence-only sex education" is a complete distortion, just like "Pro-Life" or "War on Terror" or "War on Christmas" or "Creation Theory" or any of a myriad other conservative catch-phrases.

So-called "abstinence-only sex education" is not education at all, because it is primarily defined by what it does not teach, it does not teach anything about sex other than telling you to not learn about sex. What other kind of education program is defined by NOT teaching something?
