Godzilla: Unleashed

Post by Tsyroc »

Obviously this isn't a hugely popular game since it hasn't been mentioned here yet but I've played it on the PS2 a couple of times and thought I'd see if anyone else had played it or had comments about it.

For me the game is a little disappointing because the PS2 version is a much weaker version of a game that sounds like it is much better in it's Nintendo Wii version.

The PS2 version has one new completely new monster created for the game. Not a bad monster but essentially based on the Orga platform.

Another thing that's not so great about the game in general is that you almost need to have been playing the previous game, Godzilla: Save the Earth to be very good at this game. Most of the moves are the same but the book that comes with it only explains the absolute basics.

Throwing other monsters is also a problem. The basic throw usually just has the other monster being dropped at your monster's feet instead of sending them sailing off into buildings and such. The elaborate throws still work though.

There's still the annoying unlock and purchasing fuctions that were present in the other game. Hopefully someone will come up with unlock codes soon. It is a bit easier to chalk up points to use in the store but it still take a long time to unlock everything. I don't know if there are any hidden monsters in the PS2 version. Given the number of monsters in the Wii version which aren't hidden there could easily be a hidden monster or two.

I really dislike some of the navigation menus. It's not always obvious which bit is highlighted for selection and which is not. Some parts are very simple to use

What they did really improve on this game from G:StE is the graphics on the cities. They looke a little better and curshing and stomping them is more fun. I'm not entirely sure the monster graphics have changed or not. Some of the monsters seem to look better while others are about the same. I also could have sworn that in one game King Ghidorah was absolutely huge but later in the story he seemed only somewhat bigger than Godzilla.

The main modes of the game are Brawl and Story.

The Brawl mode is pretty self explainitory but I don't recall if it's upgraded version of the Melee mode from the last game or just a one on one thing. In Story mode you often end up in what is essentially Melee mode because of the number of monsters involved.

In Story mode you follow this story from begining to end. It's not bad but as some sites have pointed out it's ocassionally rather difficult to know why you completed that stage and moved on.

I do like that the monsters are divided up into groups (Earth Defenders, Mutants, Aliens, and Global Defense Force) and that depending on what your monster does you may or may not come into conflict with the other monsters on your stage. I found that the GDF always attacked me as Godzilla but the other monsters in my groupd wouldn't attack me, and most of those in the other groups wouldn't attack me if I stayed clear of them and didin't start anything. It also helped if my approval rating was high with them. For instance the Aliens love it when you just trash everything in site, which of course the GDF hates.

Anyway, in easy mode this makes it easy for you to get through the story because you can go about destroying crystals and trying to move to the next stage instead of spending all of your time fighting. Often the other monsters will be occupied fighting each other while you do whatever you want. You do get a lot more points for defeating other monsters than you do for just trashing buildings and military assets. :)

Personally, I rather like putting a hurt on the GDF (MOGERA, Kiryu, Mechagodzilla II) and the renegade Atoragon. 8)

Anyway, I think the PS2 version is a decent companion game to G:StE but I think it would be very disappointing by itself. Hopefully they'll port the Wii version over to PS3 because it would be a trip to see Biollante, Varan and Titanosaurus in this game.

They are pretty good sized chuncks of cities, Monster Island, and the mothership. There's nothing, that I've found, like the couple of boxing ring areas that could be chosen in the previous game. The city areas are big enough that I could be in another part of the city, or island, while fighting is going on somewhere else that I couldn't readilly see from monster eye level.

The areas are still surrounded by force barriers that you get blasted back from. They can be made invisible if you like but I'm not sure what the purpose of doing that is other than to make you run into them.

The basic cities have been San Francisco, New York, London, Sydney, Osaka and Monster Island that I can recall.

And then complain if they're a) useless or b) massively overpowered?

It seems a bit directionless, like they added a thin layer of poorly-explained strategy over a beat-em-up. I'd have prefered they have concentrated on the actual fighting/powers instead.

So um, I have the real version of this game (Wii). Not to knock PS2 users but all they gave you guys was a revamped STE.

Godzilla Unleashed is possibly a unique style of game. Part fighting, part adventure, entirely dependent on the motion-sensor controls of the Wii. It certainly does not appeal to everybody, but so far me and my friends are having a lot of fun with it. I definitely like the variety of monsters as well as the thought that went into story mode, but the glitchiness means it's still in the mediocre category. Could have been great with a little more time.

What sort of glitches are you talking about? I've been thinking about getting this game, since I enjoyed Destroy All Monsters Melee.

I agree with you on the PS2 version since that's what I have. It really is a weakly reveamped version of StE.

From the screen shots I've seen the Wii version also has better graphics, or maybe I just haven't hit the right mode yet for Godzilla to look like Burning Godzilla. I've had the power ups where he turns read but that doesn't look like the semi-molten looking Godzilla I've seen a few pictures of.

I think it's fun but I've no doubt the Wii version is much more fun. At this point the the main reason for me to play Unleashed vs. StE is because the city destruction is better. The rest isn't significantly better and in the case of the fubar'd throw move a bit of decline.

The only glitches I've noticed so far have had to do with sound. The first time I played it Godzilla's roar was silent when he was introduced each round. When I played it a second time a day later the roar was there just like it had been in the StE intros. I did run across some other time where there was a minor sound glitch but I don't remember what it was.

They did fix some of the rendering glitches that had appeared in StE.

I'm sure you could find a huge list of the glitches without much searching online, but off the top of my head, one of the Mechagodzillas can't activate Power Surges...which is a big deal in the Wii game. And Spacegodzilla has a special attack that doesn't DO anything, making it pretty much just an extra taunt.

I'd read that there was a problem with Kiryu's absolute zero cannon, that it fired directly at the ground. It is a glitch but apparently away around it is to jump right before activating it and then it works pretty well.

The actual taunting functions seem to be gone from the PS2 version. On StE you could make Godzilla roar, or make this kind of "bring it" gesture and it seems like both of those are gone. I'll have to double check to be sure though.
