Rebel Alliance Industry

Post by Zor »

This is something i was wondering about.

Before the Rebel Alliance gained the assistance of the Mon Calimari, how exactly did it produce high end fightercraft like Incom X-Wings and such. Were there Rebel leening planets in which Imperial Presence was minimal where they could order ships or was there places which were the Rebel Equivelent of Bilbringi?

As far as the X-wings, they stole the first batch batch that came off the assembly line, I believe, with the schematics and such. IIRC they were able to have them produced in small enough numbers in multiple locations so as to not attract attention.

Well, A-wings were produced in small workshops throughout the galaxy. I am guessing something similar is at work for the other fighters. They did probably have deep space installations.

Is it just me, or does this seem to be somewhat akin to somebody building an F-18 in their garage?

More like building a P-51 in a dedicated machine shop. Remember that SW technology is in a state of stagnation and has been for thousands of years. A starfighter is a starfighter is a starfighter. It's extremely well-established technology that the latest models are only *very* slight improvements upon. Not absolute, bleeding edge crap. At least not the X-Wing.

And it's not like the Alliance DIDN'T have planets secretly supporting them that absolutely DID have the infrastructure to build even high-tech starfighters for them. Alderaan comes to mind.
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

The ease that the rebellion could build Starfighters, and indeed Capital warships, is probably why some of the Empire's superweapons scared the hell out of them.

Consider - X-wing, new design, nothing really knew, but refinements have increased performance.
Case in point; similiarities between the Arc-170 Fighter and the X-wing.

Now, look at the Imperial Superweapons and stuff the Emperor was pushing for. All bleeding edge, and difficult to reproduce

i.e
Tie Defenders - 50% faster then an X-wing, more heavily armored and shielded, and much more maneverable
Missile Boats - a Fighter with 80 missiles capable of taking out heavy starfighters, and depending on the weapons configuration, a wing of them may have possed a serious threat to a capital warship.

The Death Star - Planetary shields are useless. Traditional military goes right out the window

World Devestators - Bring the support industry with you! That's not exactly off the shelf (ironically, it was building off the shelf stuff...)

etc
