Imperial Army Order of Battle
Here I am again, trying to make sense of the ridiculously self-contradictory statements in WEG's ISB. I searched this board for info, but all I found was anold thread with links that no longer work. I am trying to construct the Army OOB, fill in the many blanks that are the ISB's description. It's hard to believe this hasn't already been discussed to death, so could someone please point me to a relevant thread?

The first problem is with the armor company.
Three heavy tank platoons, a heavy repulsorlift platoon and a command element give us 186 men total instead of 200.
A light armor company would have 210 men instead of the 232 the ISB states.
This means we have 14 or 22 additional support personnel, depending on the type of platoon.
I split these up as 6 crewmen for the heavy command tank, and 8 respectively 16 additional techs. They ride in an extra support repulsorlift, to make the replift numbers of an armor battalion fit.
At the battalion level, we have the repulsorlift battalion, which has 3*220 men from the replift companys, 144 men from the scout company, a 90 men HQ element and 49 drivers for the HQ element for a total of 943 men. To bring it up to the 952 men from the ISB, I added 9 men to the HQ.
An light armor battalion consists of a repulsorlift company of 220 men, two light armor companys of 232 men, a light breakthrough armor company of 195 men (including the 6 crewmen from the heavy command tank) and a 180 men HQ.
For the breakthrough company, I already added in the 16 additional techs from the armor company calcs, assuming they ride with the command tank.
That gives us a total of 1059 men for the armor battalion.
The ISB figure of 1096 is wrong, probably from a calculation error.
1096 = 3*232 + 220 + 180, meaning they assumed a breakthrough company to be the same size as a normal armor company, which is not the case and would further mean they added the 23 support personnel from the breakthrough company twice (the first time with the company, the second time with the battalion HQ)
The same mistake happened with the heavy armor battalion. 1000 = 3*200 + 220 + 180
This means they assumed a breakthrough company to be 200 men instead of the 155 they really are (including 6 command tank crew and 8 techs for a heavy armor company)
In conclusion, an armor battalion has only 955 men for a heavy battalion, or 1059 men for a light battalion.
This mistake propagates to the higher levels of the OOB, so in order to be able to find internal inconsistencies, from now on I assume the ISB numbers for armor battalions to be correct.
From here on it gets only worse. Line regiments should have 146 replifts, have only 130.
Assault regiment: Has 12 more troopers, maybe from an augmented line or assault battalion, but is missing 90 men (not including the extra 12 troops), probably forgot to include the HQ. Also, HQ seems to have 4 repulsorlifts.
The artillery regiment is missing the troops and men from the scout company.
The armor and vanguard armor regiments have 36 respectively 18 repulsorlifts less than they should have from the calculations.
On to the battlegroups: The reinforced BG is calclated as if it consisted of 2 assault BGs and one line BG instead of the other way round.
The armored BG is said to have only 318 tanks instead of the 530 it dooes have, and the mobile BG is missing 237 toppers and 162 replifts from the calculated stats.
Also noteworthy is that the TIE pilots of tha auxiliary battlegroup aren't being counted into the army total.
At the corps level, the armor corps has 1429, the mobile corps 4128 less men than they should have.
An army has 4608 more men than can be calculated from its composition. Maybe they are extra support units attached to the HQ.
If anyone wants to check my calcs, I can mail them the spreadsheet I used.

Oh, nice. I'll look through that after christmas.
I built a spreadsheet that allows you to augment and change the units as you wish. In order to do that, I had to check it for consistency with the ISB, and that's not an easy task, seeing all the mistakes they made.
Now that I'm done I want to find out if the OOB is realistic at all. I had a look at the OOB of the USA, and I found that they add in support elements like a signals unit or a hospital at higher levels, which isn't represented in the ISB. I'm wondering if the support structure of the ISB, which packs everything into unit HQ makes sense, and if the numbers are realistic. I was always under the impression that they should have more support people, but I have no idea of which type.

I looked through your numbers, and it seems like you just added up the numbers in the subunits to arrive at the numbers for a unit without considering the irregularities encountered in the ISB. Is that correct?Lord Sander wrote:http://www.lordsander.net/army.htm <- that's the new link to the stuff referenced in the old thread.

I looked up some information about support units in the US army, and it seems the usual duties are supply/transportation, maintenance and medical support, all of which are already covered by the HQ element even of company-sized units.
Fields not covered by these are personnel, finance and legal matters. This could be an explanation for the undocumented extra support staff in an army.
Summing up the omissions of the ISB, I assume the following undocumented extras:
-additional support personnel in armor companys (techs and crewmen)
-larger battalion HQ
-extra HQ repulsorlifts for assault regiments
-additional support personnel for in armies (administrative personnel)
Absolute numbers can be found in my above post, but are likely to change when units are augmented.
