DYRL didn't change what the Zentradi were. In both cases they are a race of giants created by the Protoculture to be their soldiers. Even the Zentran/ Meltran split is in the TV show. The genders were not allowed to physically interact and the Meltrans had their own fleet of purple colored ships. DYRL just removes any reference to the Supervision Army, which if you want to argue in universe, the humans didn't know much about them anyway.

The only thing DYRL really changes as compared with the TV series is that Max ends up being supersized instead of Miriya being miclonized. That isn't even really much of a problem continuity-wise since we seen the supersizing and undersizing being something that isn't hard to do (Exedol did it a few times) and thus not an issue for Mac 7 where they're both human sized.

Destroids seem to be not much more than glorified self propelled artillery, something to bolster numbers and act as a second line of defence after the Valkyries. For all their bulkiness though, they don't seem to be able to take that much more punishment than a Valkyrie. :?
I know there is a method, but all I see is the madness.

Yeah, but the Zentran/Meltran in the show were just two divisions of the same force. In the Movie, they're hostile and warring powers, with Laplamiz dueling Bdolza over Earth orbit. That much of a departure is a bit hard to reconcile.

Again with the modern reference, it's akin to Mussolini being at War with Hitler, then battling it out with their major armies on Normandy, while the allies are landing.

Clearly military buffs in the year 2040 did not look fondly upon the release of DYRL, much as people today do not look fondly upon Pearl Harbor or what have you. Anyway, Studio Nue says that for purposes of new material they draw upon the TV's story as a base. So it's not like Macross II which is pretty much a DYRL only based sequel.

Anyways, isn't Alto the hottest guy ever? Good lord he's pretty.

I like the way they've created a perfect generic pretty boy hero and then have the other characters constantly refer to how much he looks like a girl. Lampshade hanging ahoy!

Seperated into Meltrans? What?
To be fair, Meltrandi is used in Macross 7 occasionally, so the term at least is canon, and there is at least one totally seperate and somewhat hostile all Meltrandi fleet active in one of the M7 Encore episodes.

For someone who probably knows his heritage as having come from a long line of Kabuki female character actors, you'd think he wouldn't be wearing his hair in a red ribbon tied pony tail if he wanted to appear manly.

Meltran is really just the Zentradi word for female. Also here's an entry on Do You Remember Love in the Macross universe.

When he got all angry at Ranka for thinking he was a girl, I couldn't help but marvel at the fact that despite how uptight he is, he still keeps his hair like that.

And was anyone else bewildered by the incredible level of gay innuendo that Michael was piling on when they were getting ready for the show? I mean wow. Funny, but wow.

I believe Michael is gay. His profile uses the Japanese term for homosexual man.

What about Ranka? She seems really interested in Sheryl for being pretty and she seemed to cool off on Alto once she heard his manly (voiced by Tieria) anger. I can't see the love triangle forming with Alto being torn between Sheryl and Ranka. Maybe Ranka will be torn between Alto and Sheryl.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised; I think it's rubbing off on Luka as well.
(voiced by Tieria)
I knew I recognised that voice!

that would be ... unusual. Perhaps even refreshing in a land of love triangles.

Actually it wasn't Michael, it was this other guy, Bobby (sixth guy down)who is described as an Okama. Apparently he has interest in Ozuma.

Alto was described as having gone against his father, who wanted him to follow his lineage. I wonder if we're going to see his father. I hope he's a pansexual god like the fucking god of light himself, Amaterasu.

Graham of Macrossworld recently scanned some pages out of the Macross F manga. Pages 24-25 may be of interest because we get to see a VF-171 in Battroid mode. Actually it's not that exciting since the VF-171 is just an updated VF-17 but hey. The artwork is pretty rough and being printed on low grade newsprint paper doesn't help. Ranka's >o< face is kinda funny.

A couple of more interesting details from the manga. First off, it's clearly meant for a different audience and the VF-25 (or Ozma's at least) is equipped with a big ol' jack knife that's the right size for bug stabbing or Zentradi mugging.

Some new scans to hold you over until April. Macross F fulfills it's obligation as a Macross show in that it will feature a Destroid Monster. And hey, check out the Quedluun Raus!

Hot, it's the Variable version to boot. Interesting that it's sporting the SMS logo, I'm waiting for the explanation as to why the private military contractor is better equipped and trained than Frontier's official forces... I'm also wondering why the U.N. Spacy seems to have changed to the NEW U.N. Spacy and what happened to the classic "fighting kite" emblem. The new one on the shoulder of the VF-171 doesn't have anywhere near the same presence.

On the topic of the VF-171, the soldier mode looks a lot spindlier than the VF-17 and the nose cone and cockpit are different as well. Mass-produced version with less armor maybe? Looking forward to the Quedlunn Raus in action as well.

A Destroid Monster ... which is also variable in configuration. What the Christ. Incidentally, the Raus look awesome.

Behold the awesome that is the VB-6 König Monster.

Now all we need is an appearance by the Variable Glaug.

Hey slowpoke, the Koenig was in Macross VFX-2 for the Playstation. Not that I can chide for not playing that game as it's pretty bad but still. There's also a Koenig Monster toy.

The Macross Frontier site has been updated. Most notably with pictures of the Bydo-like bug monsters and the Armored VF-25.

Some people at Macross world have started translating the Macross F manga. The manga seems to be ahead of the show so there may be some spoilers. We get to find out just what the SMS is. Ozuma describes themselves as Shinsei Military Services, which is a PMF (Private Military Farm) who do special missions and test new units for the military. Their front is a shipping company apparently.

Shinsei as in Shinsei Heavy Industries, maker of the VF-19? Guess that explains why they have the VF-25 before Frontier's normal forces.

New Macross F character from the Ranka spin off manga. Her name is Klan Klein and she's a Meltran. Also her SMS uniform makes her look way too much like KOS-MOS.

I cracked up when I found out they gave Milia a bust/waist/hip measurement in her full size. 4000 centimetres!
