Something Awful takes on the Singularitarians

"The Lie of the Technological Singularity"
Meh, I'd rate it on the level of Seanbaby editorials. It does have some good points, and some funny moments, but overall it's a bit too abrasive and a bit annoying. Kind of like Dane Cook, except not as easily hateable.

The people who worry most about techno-doomsday tend to be sci-fi fans. I don't see how or why he ties it to atheism; probably just some latent desire to invent a brand of atheist fanaticism in order to make it look similar to religious fanaticism.

Most of his counterarguments are nothing but flimsy vague handwaving. Of course, this is SA we're talking about, so it's a mistake to expect any real serious intellectual discourse.

I didn't think that everyone who believes that technological singularities are possible considered them a bad thing - but that's what this article seems to convey at the outset.

Also, I found this irritating:
Ignorant Article wrote:It's a cross between your usual end-of-all-things doomsday scenario and an orgasmic apotheosis wherein the Asperger's sufferers get to leave behind their troublesome flesh and be downloaded into a greeting card microchip.
I don't "suffer" from Asperger's thank you very much.

Overall, I'm very unimpressed with this article. It didn't really attack the weak points of Singularitarianism and wasn't funny to make up for that defeciency.

But then again, what would you expect from SomethingAwful?

Johnny Mnemonic was awesome, especially Dolph Lundgren. Seriously, that movie showed us who'd win in an epic final battle - Dolph Lundgren or a techno-Dolphin.

That SA.com articul was subpar.

Making fun of Asperger's is a pasttime of SomethingAwful, because so many goons self-diagnose themselves with it.

Because who doesn't love firing off a scathing "Go crawl into your hugbox, you overweight neckbearded Aspie"? :P

It's a pretty obvious stab at the opposition; implying that the real reason they believe the way they do is they that they have disabilities that make it difficult for them to get along with other people or function in the real world, and to such a person the idea of living in a solipcistic virtual reality as a machine upload is attractive.

They pretty much identify obsessive online compilers of minutiae- that is, the stereotypical Wikipedia editor- as Asperger-wannabe sufferers. And people online do occasionally excuse their social shortcomings as being caused by diseases of Aspergers. Fake-self-diagnosed Aspergers' victims are SA's own emo kids.
