nVidia: nvlkddmkm - stopped responding

Post by El Moose Monstero »

Was wondering if anyone had heard anything about a solution or a solution coming for this issue?

Basically - the nvidia 8600GT 512 mb graphics card I have results in persistent 'nvlkddmkm has stopped responding' messages with vista. I'm not ploughing through the two 100+ page threads on the nvidia forums, but the gist seems to be that there is no solution yet and it effects the higher end graphics cards (I've seen the same issue stated by people with 8800's too). I've tried underclocking the graphics card, which solves it for HL2 but not, bizarrely, for Psychonauts. I've got all the hotfixes I can find, the newest drivers (although some people have had moderate success with rolling back to older ones, but not driven it away entirely).

Has anyone heard that a solution is in the pipeline? Should I just say 'bugger it' and get a Radeon 3850 as Ace recommended in the rig thread? Does anyone want to buy a perfectly serviceable in XP 512 Mb graphics card for £75?

Had this problem myself, the latest BETA driver's fixed it, the newest WHQL official drivers still have this problem, though.

Balls, installed the new Beta drivers for the card and now the monitor won't turn on and I'm getting the triple beep from my motherboard that signifies no video card being present.

How do I revert back to the previous driver if I haven't got any visual display to work with? Can I make some sort of disc that it might use to find a revised driver or do I need my windows disc?

That doesn't sound like a driver problem. If the BIOS is giving off beeps, thats a lower level issue, this is pre-drivers being loaded.

It only appeared when I installed the latest beta drivers instead of the official ones, however. Is there anyway it can be related? It boots up ok I think, as you can still hear the windows startup noise, but the monitor refuses to turn on and stays on standby.

Thats differant then your previous post which said the motherboard beeped saying theres no monitor.

1) Check the connector, yes, unlikely, but you might have dislodged it.
2) When the computer boots, does it display information or stay in a black screen?

It works now, not sure why. I might open up the computer and check to make sure the card is securely in it's slot, maybe it's a bit loose or something. I'd had the cable in securely before as that was the first thing I checked, but taking it out and putting it back in again worked this time.

I'm a moron it seems.
