None at all. The Ninth Doctor could have had a number of adventures before he met Rose. Hell, it's in the first episode. He was at the assassination of JFK, for one.

The Time Lords give him another dozen regenerations in The Five Doctors. So, yeah, it's total bullshit. Stark explains it well.

Actually, they offered him a whole new regeneration cycle but we can't know if he got it then. Presumably, when the Time Lords reincarnated the Master to fight the Time War, his new body had a full 12 regenerations to it.

In any case, when the time comes to work around the limit for the Doctor, there's any number of ways to do it and none which will puke all over the known material.

Stark wrote:It's meaningless to talk of 'cloning' him (then transferring his mind lol) when they can arbrarily apply more Time Lord science to have him regenerating as long as he likes. Even in the old series, the Master expected to gain more regenerations simply by interacting with sources of power (like Traken, numismation gas, etc). It seems likely that the process simply runs out of oomph around 13 and stops working or fails, not that Jesus himself steps down and carries you off to the West on his magic boat.

It's *not* a limit. It's handwaving magic that isn't really that hard to do (lol Minyans). Frankly, though, I doubt the Doctor would ever go looking for extra lives the way the Master did: only insane/evil Time Lords are shown to do so (like Borusa's hilarious quest for immortality). The science is lost with Gallifrey of course (along with the bio-extract records and the Matrix infrastructure for updating it and all the Looms).

Worrying about there being some limited number of Doctors and thus a limited life to the series is simply retarded. They'll either handwave it or simply totally ignore it, if the show even lasts that long.
He turned himself into a human in that awesome 2-parter last season. Then he got turned back into a Timelord. Poof, 13 new regens. Like anyone really gives a fuck about the limit...

I've long thought that Hugh Laurie would make an excellent Doctor.

I spent the past few days marathoning all of new Dr. Who.

But the biggest, most obvious question about Dr. Who is staring people right in the face and I'm disappointed it hasn't been addressed yet:

Can there be a female Dr. Who?

I'm not a "whovian" and I probably won't ever watch the old Dr. Who. I don't know if there's some canon that says Dr. Who can't be female. But it seems there is a huge personality shift between Eccelston and Tennant. So fucking huge, that complete personality changes are possible between regenerations.

I hope for a woman Dr. Who soon, if not after Tennant then the one after. Tennant seems a little uh... less manly than Eccelston and that isn't a bad thing at all.

I would so dig a Judi Dench Dr. Who. They could keep the boy girl tension for the people who want it by reintroducing a "Rose" and "Ricky" kind of character, if Dench is too ugly. It would absolutely suck if they did it like Voyager, pimping out the whole "woman" angle and deliberately picking a butch woman, but with the writing I've seen so far I'd trust them to write it well.

Only with Stephen Fry as a companion. The series with then have to be renamed to "A Bit Of Fry And Laurie- Series 5" and then it'd be perfect.

I kid. Laurie would be quite good.

Rowan Atkinson should be a Doctor. I know he was one in a special, but I think he should be a Doctor for a whole series or more.

Okay fine maybe not. They turned the Doctor into a romance in season two, completely violating the Doctor-Companion idea. They ruined the Ricky subplot, and Jack Harness was about as subtle as a jackhammer, total fanservice. They would probably turn woman doctor into huge titty sexpot and she'd end up on the cover of GQ.

Still you have to trust someone, somewhere. Sorry Stark, this is as good as it gets. I still can't believe I marathoned three seasons of Dr. Who when I can't even watch one episode of Voyager anymore.

Oh you're one of THOSE people. Ironic, really: 'oh noes you had an actual relationship you can't do that, but make the Doctor a smegging woman'. :)

Didn't you watch season 3? THAT'S what I'm talking about. A writing team that can make 'Daleks, right, but in the 30s' into complete poo cannot successfully handle turning the entire show on it's head.

And how they 'ruined' the Ricky subplot when it turned Mickey from a stupid coward into a brave, focused engine of world-saving is beyond me. 'Yeah pfft good to see you too, busy killing Cyber King atm'. :D

What's wrong with being one of those people ;).

I guess I am suffering from time compression: season two went by in one day and season three went by today. The relationship seemed too fast and too tacked on, but that's probably because I swallowed it all at once. I've got Rose and the Doctor on my wall now so maybe they'll grow on me.

Daleks in the 30's was pretty shit. I can't quite put my finger on it. It would probably be more shit if I watched more Dalek stuff and realized how much they ruined Daleks. Time Lord DNA in Daleks seemed pretty fucking retarded, but I didn't have much time to think about it. It also seemed retarded that he dropped the sonic, what the fuck was that?

What did you think of the reborn Master? I am thinking it is pretty yummy, but I haven't seen the second part yet, about to get it now.

Go watch it now. You cannot be told how Season 3 ends, you have to see it for yourself.
