I am casting Raise Dead on the corpse of Reagan. Zombie Ronald Reagan would be more competent, primarily because his "resurrection" would play right into the hands of the GOP's religious tendencies (Reaganites) and he would win the primary without a contest. I would then proceed to run the government with Zombie Reagan as my all to literal puppet

Ron Paul is the only appealing GOP candidate, but that's not saying much. Something about me just likes the idea of a president that would veto any bill which contained $1 of unnecessary spending.
And his supporters have a kick ass chant. "What do we want? Ron Paul! When do we want it? Ron Paul!"

Ron Paul is a complete nutbar and the more one finds out about him the scarier he becomes.
I picked John McCain out of the poll because he is the only actual Republican who was able to articulate his opposition to torture. That is how low the standards have fallen for these mooks.

I cast my vote for McCain. I just have this feeling, like if he got into office, he would do a damn good job. I haven't had that feeling for any other candidate that I can remember.

Oh I know all about it. He's clearly a free market zealot in the truest sense of the word and doesn't believe in protecting our economic interests abroad with military force, but at least he's not a neocon. And he gets points for actually talking about issues that aren't "How many terrorists can you torture in 30 seconds?" or "Which candidate's god has the biggest dick?"Alyrium Denryle wrote:Problem with him is that he is fucking nutty. he wants to abolish the FBI and CIA, then there is the We The People Act which basically nullifies the Establishment Clause of the first amendmentDurandal wrote:Ron Paul is the only appealing GOP candidate, but that's not saying much. Zombie Reagan sounds promising, but I don't know if he can deliver the same one-liners that he could the first time around. There's also that pesky amendment to worry about, so his campaign might never get out of the ground.
On the other hand, if he does still have his old charisma, he could use a new version of his classic "I will not make age an issue" line. A callback to old times, and a chance to point out the disadvantages of not being immune to fatigue and small-arms fire. The mockery of an undead former president should have an interesting effect on the more religious candidates. And then he can eat their brains. It will be a riot.
Of the mortal candidates, I'd vote for Ron Paul. He may be nutty, but its a less destructive type of nutty than the others I'm familiar with.

"Unnecessary spending" in this context is "anything beyond the administrative overhead of dissolving the federal government". Ron Paul is a lot less appealing once you learn more about his politics. I know I was super-stoked about him after hearing his stance on the war, but he's just a lolbertarian who managed to somehow get into the Republican primaries. No fucking thanks. This country's in terrible need of infrastructure. That involves lots and lots of "theft and coercion" as he would undoubtedly characterize it.Durandal wrote:Something about me just likes the idea of a president that would veto any bill which contained $1 of unnecessary spending.
Myself, I'm going to say McCain out of pure enlightened self-interest. I've lost all respect for the whore over the last five years, but everyone else on that list would be a "flee for the border" level crisis.

That's why I'm pulling for a Kucinich/Paul ticket in 2008. Everyone likes an underdog.
I figure I might as well sum up the problems I have with each candidate.
Rudy Giuliani: Conveniently forgets that 9/11 happened under his watch as mayor and that he did jack-shit to beef up WTC security when he took office after the first bombing when saying he's the only guy who can protect us from another terrorist attack.
Mike Huckabee: Sounds reasonable on some things, but then goes and says something that's totally batshit, like "The world is 6,000 years old." This is a candidate who can legitimately question George W. Bush's Christian credentials, and that's scary.
Duncan Hunter: Don't know who he is, but having a president named "Duncan" is just not acceptable.
John McCain: Sold his soul to the neocons, and in a rare display of a politician getting his comeuppance, has paid for it. He's a shell of the man he used to be.
Ron Paul: Same as with Huckabee, but with different things he sounds reasonable on. And then he says something totally batshit.
Mitt Romney: Resembles Darkseid, the DC Comics villain.
Fred Thompson: Basically running as George W. Bush II. Fiscal restraint, except in the case of the military, where it's acceptable to just spend like a drunken sailor.
Alan Keyes: Gets props for running as a black president before it was cool, but that's about it.

I think it was the '95 percent of blacks are criminals' and 'Legal abortion is the worst form of state tyranny' bullfuckery that made me unable to view him in such positive light.Durandal wrote:Oh I know all about it. First off let me speak for the Mess here on John McCain
I have to repeat that, John McCain, Mr Anti-Torture, voted for and went to the media saying here was the great anti-torture bill, despite the fact it allowed Bush to do whatever he wanted, AND to boot abolished one of the most fundamentally legal rights in our Justice system.
All that said, I'd vote Ron Paul, he's crazy, but he's a non-interventionist kind of crazy, he's not going to be invading Iran, Pakistan or any other country should he be elected, and his polices mean he's likely to be a lame duck President, plus he does have a few good policies.
Not to mention, he's one of the only Republican to vote against damn near 70% of what Bush has shoved down our throat including the Iraq Invasion and the Patriot act in both incarnations.
In short, even though Ron Paul's crazy(Religion and Economic), he's a survivable kind of crazy.
Opposition to torture does not mean you speak out publicly against it, and then like the complete useless hat fucker you are, vote for a bill that gives the President the right to torture whoever the fuck he likes, whenever the fuck he likes. John McCain is scrum of the first order, for that same bill not only let the Bush Adminstration torture anyone, it was the same bill that removed habeas fucking corpus!I picked John McCain out of the poll because he is the only actual Republican who was able to articulate his opposition to torture. That is how low the standards have fallen for these mooks.

Does the Mormon Church directly pick who it proposes to nominate, or do you have a public caucus? Is there a functional difference?Isolder74 wrote:Utah doesn't have a primary.

A caucus. You know the party's appoint a group of guys who pick the winner of the caucus. What makes you think the Mormon Church controls everything in Utah anyway? They have to throw the non-mormon's a bone periodically... Plus IIRC they are organized and make up the majority of the population, and thus the electorate, and from what I remember of their domestic policy, it is mormon-inspired to a large degree.Isolder74 wrote:A caucus. I said McCain only because of the anti-torture thing but that seems to have been spanked out of the green.
I guess it is because he seems the one who wouldn't leave the Republican party in TOO big a mess.
It was tempting to say either Paul or Guliani in the hopes that the Religous Right would put up their own independent but I think that's a long shot.
