Which Republican would you vote for in the primary?
Moderators: Alyrium Denryle, Edi, K. A. Pital
Mike Huckabee has based a lot of his campaign on being the candidate for fundamentalist cave-man-conservative nutcases, and he has a much better chance of beating a democratic candidate than Ron Paul, who would make for a fun campaign and then lose.Fire Fly wrote:I'd rather vote for Mike Huckabee than for Ron Paul. His Divine Shadow wrote:I would vote RP, just to see what would happen. And that's why Ron Paul has narrowly defeated Zombie Ronald Reagan for my pretend vote.

Its really hilarious for me to put a vote into this thread as I've recently been reading Team of Rivals which is probably the best bit of Lincoln shcolarship I've ever read. Just getting into his head and the heads of everyone who coalesced into the original Republican party its both unsuprising they devolved to this point but also sad as anytime a decent leader emerged to bridge the gap between wings of the party they usually got positive shit done.

My vote's based on the fact that I don't live in the USGlocksman wrote:It sounds good over here too, but Paul also wants to allow private currrency backed by gold to tbe legal tender, abolish the income tax, eliminate the Federal Reserve, etc.Spyder wrote:I would vote for Ron Paul. I don't know about you guys but non-interventionist sounds pretty sweet from this side of the planet.
If Paul wasn't a libertarian nutjob, I'd vote for him.
But since he is, my choice in the Repub primary is Thompson, simply because he's not FlipFlopFascist Rudy McRomney.

Why the love for zombie Reagan? His greatest attribute was inspirational speaking, while his actual policies were shit. Modern Republican economic policy is not some distorted version of what Reagan preached; it is EXACTLY what Reagan preached.
I'd rather vote for a fucking vegetable than any of these idiots. Luckily, I don't have to do either, since I don't live your country. But the world still has to live with the consequences of your decisions anyway.

You have to admit, there's a refreshing honesty about a modern Republican who literally has a cold, unbeating heart and replaces formerly intelligent people with others just like himself.Darth Wong wrote:Why the love for zombie Reagan? I didn't vote for zombie Reagan. I voted for non-reanimated Reagan, who would presumably hang around doing what corpses do best: nothing.Darth Wong wrote:Why the love for zombie Reagan? Wouldn't electing a corpse mean that the VP takes over immediately after inauguration? The Original Nex wrote:The poll specifies his dead corpse, not some frankenstein reanimation.

On the assumption that that doesn't happen, you can make an argument that such an office-holder would at least be unable to do as much harm as W. I've often stated -- not so much here, but elsewhere -- that a ham sandwich would have made a better president than the guy you have now, but I had to reject that statement because a ham sandwich can't sign legislation into law, and could therefore not get anything done. The current thread about the whole pocket veto attempt has made me aware that, if Congress is in session, the ham sandwich would just have to not veto a bill.
There you have it: tasty pork products can also lead the Executive Branch!

Its not actually zombie Regan but rather Regan's corpse and I would support that because a dead body which physically does nothing while in office would serve us infinitely better as Congress could pass any law it needs to while we wouldn't have to suffer through bullshit supply side economics as I've not yet met a corpse who can speak. More importantly this means the world's shortest ever State of the Union speeches.Darth Wong wrote:Why the love for zombie Reagan? Democracy's a grand thing; you get the choice between the knuckle-dragging warmonger, the other knuckle-dragging warmonger, the other semi-educated knuckle-dragging warmonger or the knuckle-dragging warmonger that has one good policy that isn't " not fuck the world up as much as possible".Darth Wong wrote:Why the love for zombie Reagan? Remember folks, not voting forfeits your right to complain. When you do vote you can even complain even if the person you voted for does exactly what everyone said he'd do.

You left Ron Paul off that list, who should be the educated-nutty fundamentalist with a strict non-interventalist policy.
Which is why he's so poplar with independents. At least Ron Paul will only fuck things up domestically. Moving to Canada is a viable option with Ron Paul, not so much with the other guys.

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

I didn't really have any specific examples in mind. My point was typically you have the choice between shithead A and shithead B, C, D ect.Discombobulated wrote:Out of curiosity, which is the semi-educated one and which is the one with the good policy?Spyder wrote:Democracy's a grand thing; you get the choice between the knuckle-dragging warmonger, the other knuckle-dragging warmonger, the other semi-educated knuckle-dragging warmonger or the knuckle-dragging warmonger that has one good policy that isn't " not fuck the world up as much as possible".

Truth be told, Reagan really had no idea what he was doing. He was the first truly clueless figurehead President for his neocon/free-marketer advisors, who really came up with all the material. He was just the marketing presentation. For Christ's sake, he once cracked ethnic jokes about Russian cab drivers in a diplomatic meeting with Gorbachev, and had to be yelled at by his own SecState afterward. What a senile clown. Also, his people moderated their economic policy as it was shit later in his term; Bush simply only hired those Reaganites who were thorough ideologues.Darth Wong wrote:Why the love for zombie Reagan? Reagan may have been an imbecile, but he was sincere in his speeches and economic policies. I've heard recordings made of some of the speeches he gave many years before he became president, and they sounded exactly like the supply-side bullshit he pushed when he was in office.

I doubt he understood supply-side economics at even a superficial level. He just thought anyone who believed in social justice was stupid and a commieh and liked to spread the propaganda for rich financiers et al. He even produced a propaganda record in his youth for the AMA that discounted socialized medicine as a communist plot.
There were supply-side economists who were generally unaccepted in the academic community but were cultivated by Reagan to provide the veneer of academic credibility to his antipathy for social programs in any form.

Oh, I agree that he had no idea what he was talking about. But that doesn't mean he couldn't have a very strongly held opinion on the matter anyway, and be capable of hiring or firing people based on their allegiance to these principles.Illuminatus Primus wrote:I doubt he understood supply-side economics at even a superficial level.
