The Anthrax Attacks...

Post by Shroom Man 777 »

Did they ever...you know, find out who perpetuated an actual-factual act of bio-terrorism? I mean, the fact that no one knows who did this, that's a bit disconcerting (if you're an American, which I'm not, ha!).

I'm also surprised that there isn't a shitstorm over this. It's perfect material for further fearmongering and can also be used to criticize all this Homeland Security Patriot BS that can't even figure out who's sapping and impurifying America's precious postal services!

The case went cold after a very extensive investigation. The strain was later identified being of US military origin, so it's possible that there's a tight lid on any further details about the investigation.

Well, the problem with something like Homeland Security is that if it does its job, you won't notice the difference...

You only ever hear a big deal made about their failures, really...

Ghetto edit: Alright, maybe you hear about their successes occasionally, but you're probably more likely to hear about failure, regardless of whether its working or not...

No, the case was never solved. Oh, I suppose it's possible the case was solved but the information kept secret by the government... but I think that very unlikely.

As for unease... well, for one thing casualties were much lower than originally anticipated. There are now protocols for detecting such contamination and for sterilizing mail going to potential targets. And there hasn't been a repeat. Are those godd reasons to stop worrying? Maybe, maybe not but anthrax has largely dropped off the radar screens of US citizens.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. A few years back I remember watching a show on the History Channel called "Conspiracy?". Most shows dealt with the usual nonsesne, like JFK, RFK, and Area 51, but they were generally pretty good at laying the case for why the conspiracy is bullshit out.

But then there was the one on the Anthrax attacks. Now, I don't remember all the specific details but one "theory" put out I found incredibly intriguing. It requires almost none of the usual nonsense about vast numbers of people lying and keeping secrets with coverups of coverups.

It suggests that right after 9/11, Army intelligence (or some other organization, maybe CIA or NSA, but I'm pretty sure it was Army Intelligence) decided to test the feesablity of mail attacks using anthrax. It suggests that maybe one or more of the officials involved took it upon themselves to actually send out real anthrax and them some direct superior found out and shut it down.

Now, I'm not one for conspiracy nonsense. But this is one that frankily sounds plausible. Just a few individuals that took things too far in the 'panic' after 9/11.

I'm inclined to disbelieve it, but damned if it doesn't give me a bit of the creeps.

Well, if you want conspiracy theories, I recall one at the time that the anthrax attacks were a Republican attempt spread fear and to kill a Democratic Congressman or two, since they had a small edge at the time. No evidence of course, and with the investigation stalled there won't be. Although it would explain why the investigation petered out, and why it was American anthrax.
