Overall I thought the episode was a better turn in quality compared to some of the more recent ones this season.
Hell of a heady concept for dealing with the Asurans, as well as the improvised solution at the end.

Good to see some of the Asgard stuff survives Ark of Truth. The lack of the Odyssey makes me think it was destroyed during Ark of Truth. I wonder if the time-dilation technology survives as well. Also interesting to see that this indeed makes them the 5th race, with the power that the 5th race entails. They can now stand toe to toe with the best of them.
Rail guns apparently do damage to Replicator ships as well, though they could have been unshielded at the time they arrived.
This also demonstrates a fundamental Stargate type pattern, that of fairly minimalist ship fleets. Of course we've seen examples of that before, but here again it's confirmed that most great powers have low hundreds or not even a hundred ships that still constitutes a major fleet. Seems exceptionally minimalist given the resources a replicator fleet could bring to bear if they actually tried (or a spacefaring race that has existed for an exceptionally long period).
Obviously there's a lot in this episode that will come and bite them in the ass later.

I'd say those numbers jive-the fluff from the roleplaying books says the various major system lords never had a huge number of ships.

The episode was great! I loved the notion of Fran, she had none of the usual self-aware-weapon angst; She was HAPPY to complete her fundamental purpose.
"Hello"... PWNZORED!
I was quite surprised to see Weir back, though the leather-clad 'Now I'm evil' uniform made me laugh.
I give the episode 5/5, even with the clumsy way the travellers were brought in.

Something I've been thinking about...
Are we going with the assumption from the episode that the latest version of Asgard shields can actually block out drone penetration technology? Were the 304s hit with drones, or were they just lucky enough to be attacked by whatever pulse weapons the Ancients had?
It seemed as if the CGI guys just completely forgot about drone capabilities, at least in regards to the allies, as even the travelers were able to shield themselves for a time from attack. On the other hand, the warships' shields seemed painfully easy to penetrate by a variety of weapons used during the battle. Not that ship technology consistency has ever been a Stargate strong point.

The Asurans had a park. Cool. The Asuran ships didn't seem to fire many drones at all in that battle. Perhaps they were being resupplied.
Incidentally, it looked very much like (a minature version of) the battle of Coruscant. Especially as the Orions look faintly like CIS Recusant destroyers. If blockier. They probably ran out of budget, but I'd have liked to have seen more drones, too, as well as wraith and Asuran cruisers, and lagrange ancient defence sattellites. And more wraith ships in general.
Now... What the fuck is with Evil(?) Weir? How did she get that ship, is she a replicator now... etc.
Of course, it's rather silly for them to assume the Asurans aren't still out there; their entire race can be backed up in something that'd fit in my living room. A collection of ZPMs, one of those archives, and a few flat-beds like the one on Atlantis, and there'll be more of them. And I think they'd be rather more angry next time.
It also appears that Asgard technology is conclusively better than the Ancients' in key areas (weapons...)

To be fair, they didn't exactly maul the Asuran Atlantis very quickly either, taking their sweet time to destroy it. Their SOP might just be to fire conservatively for no apparent reason.NecronLord wrote:The Asuran ships didn't seem to fire many drones at all in that battle.
I think it's more likely that they simply weren't trying, for whatever reason (Weir's comment makes this possible). No one tried to stop Fran or even pulled a weapon on her. The comment about having to deal with planetary drone defenses never seemed to pan out (If they were there, they were also suitably lax defenses compared to a tiny outpost on Earth), and of course we have the Asuran battleships that fell pretty easily.Perhaps they were being resupplied.

To be entirely fair, assuming there's not someone sitting in the chair constantly, it'd take a while to bring those weapons systems online anyway. A rather large weakness of them.

By the mythology associated with the Asgard it's likely they were much more likely to go to war in their early days. But for the good causes...
The Ancients on the other hand are shown to be mostly pacifist. Their weapons are powerful, but they rely on subtlety (shield penetration) rather than brute strength (demonstrated power of Asgard beam weapons here and in Unending).

My favorite episode of season 4 so far. Awesome battle sequence and it's only right that the Aurora's buckle under the new Asgard plasma beams, because so did the Ori ships.
And I don't think the Asurans were firing any drones, their yellow blobs seemed very different from the drones Sheppard fired from the Traveller's ship.

Great episode anyway.
But why would they (Earth and Travelers) want to join the Wraith fleet after the battle? I expected the Wraith to attack directly after the battle.

I wonder what their reaction was on Earths new weapons.Bounty wrote:That's something that made me go "huh?" too. My best guess is that the Hives too too much damage to risk going after the other ships.I expected the Wraith to attack directly after the battle.
And what was that about too few Queens? Did the Asurans target Queens?

The same ships that had trouble blocking out fire from modified AMRAAM and rail gun fire. I'm get the feeling that either:Gustav32Vasa wrote:The Ori shields seemed to last longer then Asurans shields.
1. The Asurans aren't trying very hard for some master "they have a plan" crap for later on or...
2. This is going to be one of those episodes where the writers and CGI folks oversold the ease with which one can destroy ancient/ausran warships.
I'm thinking it'll be mostly 1. They made a big deal about the new beam weapons being effective. If they really didn't launch a single drone, and Weir has some master plan, then they just kind of took it up the ass so they could make their plan a reality in private.
Except that would make them complete idiots. Their ships have been hunted down relentlessly and destroyed to the degree that they've been forced to pull back their fleet to a defensive stance. Having no one manning the chair is like having no one manning the anti-aircraft and SAM batteries during a time of war (this goes for Atlantis as well, honestly. They should always have someone manning that chair). But there are a lot of problems with them, such as why they didn't detect the fleet on long range sensors. To be entirely fair, assuming there's not someone sitting in the chair constantly, it'd take a while to bring those weapons systems online anyway. A rather large weakness of them.

I'm finding it questionable that a fleet of ships can jump to the Asuran homeworld completely undetected to the point the ships arent shooting back yet Atlantis has been able to detect fleets easily. The Asurans must be shockingly retarded not to notice a dozen blips jumping straight for their homeworld. At the very least they should be able to detect the fleet of Wraith ships. I was half expecting the Wraith to switch sides after the battle but I suspect it will be the following episodes where we see the Wraith pouncing on Atlantis.
The 'evil' Dr Weir thing is a bit... stupid. We were told she was dead so either that was a load of bullshit or this is a replicator. In either case the reason for sacrificing their homeworld better be damn good.
I'm rather interested what she meant anyway. Who exactly were they concered with watching them ?
Wraith / Asurans / IOA / Atlantis etc ?
I'm wondering if this is the lead up for the destruction of the Galactic Bridge because the Asuran Weir should know where it is and if they intend on taking on Atlantis it is a prime target for cutting Atlantis off.
