Obama: Lie or Truth?
My mother has said that Obama does not salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance, is this true?

Re: Obama: Lie or Truth?
I think this all stemmed from him not wanting to wear that stupid flag lapel pin awhile back.squidman001 wrote:My mother has said that Obama does not salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance, is this true?

It's bullshit. From what I heard, he actually did salute the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance - the real brouhaha was over the fact that he refused to wear, as mentioned, the stupid flag lapel pin.

It's total and fucking horseshit. It's manufactured from a picture which shows him not saluting, but putting a hand over his heart. And his mouth open.
Why? He was singing the anthem. Like man people I've met, he does the 'hand on heart' while belting out
More manufactured nonsense.

Next time the 'Obama doesn't salute' meme pops up, send the person who forwarded it on to you a pic of Reagan standing with his hand over his heart.
Then we can start a 'Reagan didn't salute' meme.

Why does it matter? I don't say the pledge either, unless it occurs to me to say the 1923 version, but it certainly doesn't mean that I'm some traitorous Islamofascist, as I'm sure the Republican Party would like you to believe.squidman001 wrote:My mother has said that Obama does not salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance, is this true?

Re: Obama: Lie or Truth?
Thats the exact problem. Some people are stupid enough (read: my parents) to think that such things mean you are insanely unpatriotic/terrorist and have no right being within 1000 miles from the white house. It sounded like horse shit to me, I just wanted some back up. I figured if it was true, Gulliani would be saying something to the effect of " noun verb 9-11. noun verb 9-11, Obama is a terrorist... 9-11!"General Schatten wrote:Why does it matter? My mom was also spouting off some crap about how he became a christian only after he became a politician and that before that he was (based on tone of voice) a dirty terroristic muslim, and that "once a muslim, always a muslim."

Amazing how the apple does fall far from the tree sometimes, isn't it?

He probably is still nontheist but took up christianity because a politician basically needs to be christian or at least have some religion to make it.

Knowing her, citing the Founding Father's like they're Demigod's who carry the word of the Lord himself should shut her up.squidman001 wrote:My mom was also spouting off some crap about how he became a christian only after he became a politician and that before that he was (based on tone of voice) a dirty terroristic muslim, and that "once a muslim, always a muslim."![]()
Just ask her, "Who cares if he is a muslim, George Fucking Washington didn't seem to care?" Then throw her this quote.
We have abundant reason to rejoice that in this Land the light of truth and reason has triumphed over the power of bigotry and superstition ... In this enlightened Age and in this Land of equal liberty it is our boast, that a man's religious tenets will not forfeit the protection of the Laws, nor deprive him of the right of attaining and holding the highest Offices that are known in the United States.
-- George Washington, letter to the members of the New Church in Baltimore, January 27, 1793, in Anson Phelps Stokes, Church and State in the United States, Vol 1. p. 497, quoted from Albert J Menendez and Edd Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom

His name is Obama and his skin colour is dark. Flag-waving idiots like your mother probably wouldn't trust him if he donated a fucking kidney to save her life.

I sent her an email with the Washington quote and another part about his religious life. She'll most likely get pissed at me and not talk to me for a while.

Whoa. Your mom stops talking to you because you show her information she doesn't want to see? That's kind of fucked up.squidman001 wrote:I sent her an email with the Washington quote and another part about his religious life. She'll most likely get pissed at me and not talk to me for a while.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

I don't know if that will be her exact reaction, but my parents, when they say something, they're right. Even if they're wrong, they don't back down. They were always right. The two problems are that my mom and dad do differ on what they will back down upon. My dad heard this news and was still undecided about whether he was going to vote for Obama or Clinton. While we both agree that mom is acting a bit crazy about this, his vote has now shifted to Clinton more firmly. The other problem is when they get in arguments on an issue. Neither side is willing to back down. Thankfully it doesn't happen to often and when it does it's not anywhere near as bad as some of the arguments that happened when I was younger. Maybe they've grown up a bit.Discombobulated wrote:Whoa. Your mom stops talking to you because you show her information she doesn't want to see? I don't think it was that Obama wasn't 'saluting' in a military sense, I think for a while he was actually declining to say the pledge when congresspeople were falling all over each other to shout it during the 'pledge crisis' last year.Jadeite wrote:Point out to her that civilians aren't supposed to salute the flag.

Yeah, it's not as if someone devoting his life to public service would indicate allegiance to the country or anything. Oh no, the most important thing is an empty gesture, like reciting certain words in public for all to see, or aping Reagan and acting as if a civilian should pretend he's a soldier.CaptainChewbacca wrote:I don't think it was that Obama wasn't 'saluting' in a military sense, I think for a while he was actually declining to say the pledge when congresspeople were falling all over each other to shout it during the 'pledge crisis' last year.Jadeite wrote:Point out to her that civilians aren't supposed to salute the flag.

Indeed, I was impressed with the quiet way he was making a valid point about the proliferation of flag pins and shouting the pledge to appear to be more American.Darth Wong wrote:Yeah, it's not as if someone devoting his life to public service would indicate allegiance to the country or anything. Of course, most folks didn't see it that way.
