Irony???? Im confused
Really lame trekkies that i know you guys despise refer to starwars turbo lasers as just lasers, therefor navigational deflectors are immue to lasers...
This has been proven wrong.
Light is made up of particles/waves. Photons are individual quantoms of light.
If the deflector idea of invincibility WERE to be true...wouldnt photon torpedos not work????? In this case they would be made of "photons" which are just individual quantoms of light. Even moreso than Mr. Wong has pointed out, this seems stupid. Why would something be immune to lasers but not photons??

Dude, this was beaten to death before I even thought about SW vs. ST debates using that very line of reasoning. BTW, welcome to SD.net.*chucks egg*

What exactly were you trying to say here? You seemed to have effectivly muddled the sentence.Egg Really lame trekkies that i know you guys despise refer to starwars turbo lasers as just lasers, therefor navigational deflectors are immue to lasers...
Photon torpedoes is just the name for them, they arent made up of photons. Photon Torps use a matter/antimatter in which the matter and antimatter is contained in two seperate magnetic bottles. The reaction is on a 1:1 ratio(in which the matter and antimatter are both annihilated) in order to disrupt sheild systems and penetrate hull armor, unless I've missed something. Approximate yeild for one Photon torpedo is about 250 isotons on the latest model IIRC.If the deflector idea of invincibility WERE to be true...wouldnt photon torpedos not work????? In the muddling the joke is because they deny Turbolaser(which follow no laser we know of), why not they say the same for Photon Torpedos on the same basi.s

Why ARE they called photon torpedoes? The only thing I can think of is that M/AM anihilation releases primarily gamma rays, and gamma rays, like visible light, are made up of photons. Still, why not call it a gamma ray toropedo or a matter/antimatter torpedo?

Well, the only reasonable thing I can think of is that they glow, thus they emit light, thus they give off photons.RedImperator wrote:Why ARE they called photon torpedoes? A bit like a lightsabre analogy. They're not made of light, but they emit light.

Graham Kennedy and Lord Edam justified the quote by explaining that there are some differences between light and laser light (which all had to do with the single frequency of laser-light and the multiple frequencies of regular light), and therefore that regular light can hurt the ship but laser-light cannot. Of course, they offered NO justification for how regular light could possibly harm the ship if laser light could not (because their differences were all irrelevent in terms of energy), and Kennedy even contradicted himself by claiming it was possible for the ship's navigational deflector to somehow make the ship transparent to laser light, while in his fanfic he claimed that an DS Super Laser could be STOPPED when it hit a shuttlecraft.

While I think the name was chosen because it sounds cool, the fact that a M/AM reaction would create gamma rays as the primary means of damage to the target is a very good reason for the name. The torpedo literally inflicts damage via high-energy photons, hence the name "photon torpedo."RedImperator wrote:Why ARE they called photon torpedoes? Which brings up the next point.. if a weapon generates photons and does damage to Star Trek shields (photon torpedoes), then it's pretty stupid to think that another weapon that also uses photons (a true laser of sufficient power) would not be capable of doing the same thing.
Ehm, not quite, its the smallest step between levels of something. Stairs are quantized, for example.Master of Ossus wrote:A quantum is the smallest possible unit of energy.SPOOFE wrote:No, he's right! Photons are individual quantoms of light!!
