14 people have been arrested and bomb-making equipment seized as Spanish Police move against a terror cell in Barcelona.
The Spanish interior minister said the suspected Islamist terror group had been "highly organised" in preparing an attack there.
A Spanish newspaper is reporting that British Police are amongst the European authorities warned about activity of the cell.
The material siezed by Spanish police include four timing devices, ball bearings and wires.
They were discovered in raids on five houses early this morning.
The spanish authorities believe it is bomb making equipment and that the group's target was an attack in barcelona, where this material was seized.
The Spanish authroities raided a well known mosque in the Raval area of Barcelona, and arrested 14 people at flats across the city.
The supects include 12 Pakistanis and two Indians, although the interior minister said it was probable some of those arrested were innocent.
The police acted after receiving information from unnamed foreign intelligence agencies, and the prime minister confirmed there was an international dimension to this anti-terror raid.
As those arrested were brought in for questioning, the interior minister described them as a highly organised, radical islamist group.
Reports from Spain say the authroities there have warned officials in other European countries including Britain, about the possibility of plots against Pakistan's President Musharaff, who is visiting Euope next week.
The Home office here refused to comment on security matters.
The Spanish fears of a terrorist attack are all too real.
Spain was the target of Europe's worst Islamic terror plot - 191 commuters were killed when four Madrid trains were bombed, and nearly 2,000 other people were injured.
That was three days before Spain's 2004 general election and with new elections just over six weeks away, the country is tonight on a high state of alert.
The Spanish authorities haven't ruled out more arrests connected to this operation, but the prime minister warned there should still be caution about the aims and abilities of those held so far.

That is what the article says. And there are about 140 million Muslim Indians - against about 150 million in Pakistan.

Spain withdrew their troops from Iraq years ago! Why aren't the Islamists satisfied yet? What more do they want from the Spaniards and their government? Mandatory blowjobs from Spanish hotties?
Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)
The Islamic Fundies want all of Spain back under Muslim rule. They feel that because they used to own it they still own it and the current occupants are stealing it from them.

Well actually, the Spaniards can keep Galicia, Asturias, and Navarra. Though if we go by the "used to own it" clause, then I propose Turkey secede all its territory to Greece. Then after Greece renames itself "Estern Roman Empire", the Muslims have to give back Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine.
Everything in green essentially. Islamic Fundies believe that anything that Muslims once controlled, should eventually once more be controlled by Muslims.

Oh, but you don't understand - the ownership thing only applies to MUSLIMS! Other people don't count! Turkey can't seceded its territory to Greece because it has been held by Muslims - therefore it will always be the "rightful" property of the Islam. Even if territory is held by Muslims for only one day, because they have owned it, it will forever after be "Muslim".

These guys are just begging to be ethnically cleansed, aren't they? (I am NOT condoning genocide, but you can probably find hundreds of thousands of people who, fed up with Muslim terrorists, support the idea of doing what the Serbs did to Muslims during the Yugoslav Wars.)

Oh, take it further - let's suppose, hypothetically, that a Muslim family bought a house in the middle of, say, London... according to the Islamo-whackjobs that piece of real estate is now MUSLIM and no other people have a right to own it, ever. Anything ever acquired by Muslims by any means is forever Muslim property and fuck the rest of the world. By their reckoning, they probably feel they now "own" 16 acres of Manhattan, part of the Pentagon, and a field in rural Pennsylvania. Funny, though... no one seems particularly eager to step up and enforce those claims....

Right on. The kind of people that claim a piece of land for themselves based on the fact that they owned it in distant past are really begging to be ethnically cleansed. I'm glad we all agree with president Ahmadinejad.
This is also one more reason why USA should stem the flow of Mexican immigrants. Remember what those whackjobs did in UK? Oh sure that was IRA which has nothing to do with Mexicans but they are all Catholics right? I mean since we are already making moronic generalizations about members of billion-people religions.

It's not so silly as that, fortunately. It refers to the recognized borders of the Caliphates of Islam. Which in the case of the Umayyads, actually does include all of Spain--most of the northern Christian remnant states paid tribute, you see (well, different Islamic scholars would have different opinions here), which counts as being part of the Caliphate. Southern France, maybe. It was briefly occupied before Charles the Hammer smashed the Islamic armies at Tours. Certainly all of the Balkans right up to Pressburg and the gates of Vienna, the Ukraine, and so on.

Charles didn't smash the Muslim Army. He killed their leader on the 3rd day since meeting it and expected more fighting in the morning, after both sides made camp for the night, only to find the Muslim Army left the field.
Abd Al-Rahman's death caused a power vacuum as he was also the Governor of Al-Andalus and led to revolts and civil war among the Arabs and Berbers. That more than anything else ended the Muslim conquest.

That's far worse than if Al-Rahman's army had been actually smashed but he'd survived.

The army melted away because its leader was killed. That's the same bloody thing as smashing it; at the end of the day, there is no army left. You yourself admit to the fact that there was a power vacuum in al-Andalus that followed, and the whole place degenerated into a civil war. If that isn't "smashing", what is?

A smashing victory is clear and decisive where you completely route your enemy, seize his camp and all its attendant supplies and camp followers and capture large amounts of men.
Charles the Hammer got a tactical draw and was still expecting a fight the next day not knowing during the chaos of the battle his opponent's commander was killed. He had an empty camp with little if any loot and a pissed off Army that had been looking forward to rape, pillage, and plunder the enemy camp. The Arab and Berber Armies were still intact and would be for a few more years.
Now if you want a smashing series of victories then that would be Avigon in 737 and river Berre in Corbieres in 738.

I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic and am NOT condoning genocide-- I certainly don't support ethnic cleansing-- but you bring up a good point regarding the hypocrisy of the Islamists. They complain about the Israelis because the Israelis make the same claim to Israel territory, yet they're making the same damn claims regarding Spain.
These people will be in for a world of hurt if the West actually decides the big apocalyptic battle they seem to be itching for. The last time I checked, asymmetrical warfare tactics like suicide bombings and IEDs do NOT negate air superiority, and if nukes are used...

Essentially, the strategies being employed by the Muslims are dependent on Western restraint and civility. At any time the West can say "fuck this shit, we're going medieval on their asses" and turn millions of Islamists into millions of charcoal briskets. It is highly unlikely that they would, which is why the Muslim extremists aren't being foolish, but that doesn't change the fact that they could, which is the inherent element of risk.
