CNN Writes Racist, Sexist Article: Hilarity Ensues

(CNN) -- Within minutes of posting a story on CNN's homepage called "Gender or race: Black women voters face tough choices in South Carolina," readers reacted quickly and angrily.

Readers want media to focus more on the candidates and how they feel about the issues not their gender or race.

Many took umbrage at the story's suggestion that black women voters face "a unique, and most unexpected dilemma" about voting their race or their gender.

CNN received dozens of e-mails shortly after posting the story, which focuses largely on conversations about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama that a CNN reporter observed at a hair salon in South Carolina whose customers are predominantly African-American.

An e-mailer named Tiffany responded sarcastically: "Duh, I'm a black woman and here I am at the voting booth. Duh, since I'm illiterate I'll pull down the lever for someone. Hm... Well, he black so I may vote for him... oh wait she a woman I may vote for her... What Ise gon' do? Oh lordy!"

Tiffany urged CNN to "pull this racist crap off" the Web site and to stop calling Hillary the "top female candidate."

"Stop calling Barack the "Black" candidate," she wrote.

Many readers were upset that the story did not delve beyond a cursory mention of the issues.

The article stated: "While race and gender play a role, most women here say they plan to vote based on the issues. They rank health care, education and the economy in order of importance."

I have to wonder what kind of bone-headed editor would allow a story like the one that they wrote without thinking that they just might wind up getting a lot of bad publicity. . .

Never happen, I know, but it's fun to think about. This bullshit takes away from what actually matters in the election, just as much as does the media autofellation about which candidate has more skeletons in their closet, or who has the better hair.

I'm willing to bet it's some young white male who wrote that.

After all, women aren't human beings, they're women, and they see everything through the prism of being a woman. They can't possibly decide something on the basis of being a human being because, well, they're women which isn't like being a real person.

Ditto for any other group off the mainstream power structure. I mean, a black person couldn't possibly make a decision about anything without race being a factor, right?

To a lot of ignorant white males (and for better or worse, white males still dominate the controlling parties of the news media) it is impossible to see Hillary as a candidate who stands for A, B, C, and D and just happens to be female, or Obama as a candidate who stands for W, X, Y, and Z and just happens to be black. It's like saying it's impossible that a voter in Maine could vote for George Bush because he's a Texan - it's bullshit. Someone in Maine voting for Bush isn't voting for Bush because he's from Texas, he's voting for Bush because of some other reason. Likewise, it is entirely possible that a woman is voting for Hillary not because Hillary is a woman but because of some other reason, or a black person is voting for Obama for some other reason than because he is black. For that very reason - people considering factors other than just gender and race - Hillary can't take the women's vote for granted, and Obama can't take the black vote for granted. In fact, whoever wrote that article must not be paying attention because there has been ample verbage published in several media about women who don't like Hillary and black people who don't like Obama.

I have heard for decades from certain people that no woman could ever be President because there aren't enough women willing to vote for her - as if there could be no other reason to vote for a woman than gender, as if no man could ever vote for a woman. I have heard that no black man could ever be President because blacks are a minority and there are not enough black people to outweigh the white vote - again, as if there could never be a reason to vote for black man other his race, and as if no one who is not black would ever vote for a black man.

I think some white folks are just scared shitless that they'll have to choose between a c*nt and a n*gg*r for President, and yes, I have heard it put in terms that crude.

I've actually had someone accuse me of being misogynistic for not supporting Hillary. Instead of taking the time to explain that I disagree with her on very important issues and that her demeanor represents just about everything I hate in a politician, I just point out that by their logic they hate black people.
