Russian Avengers help

Post by Havok »

So, this is something I've always wanted to see. It's bugged me for years that all of the cool Russian super heroes were either based in America or bad guys. However I know Marvel would never do this so I just drew it myself.

A little background.

After the fall of Communism, and as the influence of the West became greater and more financial opportunities opened up, super villains started moving into the former USSR and causing problems.

While a new political hierarchy was in place, the old way of thinking and mistrust of super powered beings held, so the super villains gained a strong foot hold in the new Russia.

Finally, after quite a few defeats at the hand of the villians, the Russian government decided that they should have a team of their own heroes, much like the Avengers in America.

Nick Fury was secretly contacted to help form this team. His only stipulations was that he got to pick the team and that they operate autonomous of the government. They agreed.

Knowing that this wouldn't be a group that got together by accident as the original Avengers did, Fury brought in the first member of his team, The Black Widow. She is to serve as the government liaison, intel officer and training instructor.

A new Crimson Dynamo was tapped. Unlike previous versions, this Dynamo was super powered on his own before he even dawned the crimson armor. The Dynamo has far enhanced size and strength, but where these abilities and changes come from he has not told anyone. He is also fiercely loyal to his country.

The Abomination was approached for membership. He accepted, but the stipulations under which he did are known only to him and Fury.

Two newcomers to the meta human landscape were also brought on to the team.

Black Streak, who's magic based powers are somewhat of a mystery, but are believed to be similar to that of the The Juggernaut's in the area of strength, endurance and resistance to harm. He also has the power of flight.

Joseph, who is the grandson of one of Russia's failed super solider attempts of WWII, is a very powerful mutant with the power of telekinesis. He turned down an invitation to join Xavier's school in the past. No one knows why M Day did not effect him.

Magik, Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina, who has been dead for some time, has reappeared as an adult. It is not known if this is actually the Magik of Earth 616, or from another time line, but she is clearly from a future time line. Magik herself claims to be the "true" Illyana, and possesses both the mutant powers and magic abillities of who she claims to be. She also is unaffected by M Day, which makes some believe she arrived in this time after it happened, but no one, including her, knows for sure.

Finally, Fury needed a leader for this group. Black Widow was offered the position, but declined. Fury's only other choice was the X-Man Colossus.
Peter Rasputin has proved himself time and time again in battle with the X-Men and along side teams such as the Avengers, The Fantastic Four, SHIELD and so on. He has helped avert world wide destruction and even helped avert galactic wars. He has personally engaged in combat with threats such as The Juggernaut, The Hulk and even Gladiator of the Shi'Ar Empire.

What brought Colossus to the forefront for Fury though was a conversation that he had with Captain America shortly after he, along with the majority of America's super heroes, returned from the Beyonder's Battle World.

Captain America told Fury of Colossus's part in the battle and in the final decision to attack Doom. He told him of the compassion and heart he saw and felt from the young man and that he felt he would become an excellent leader of the X-Men one day if Xavier ever truly could give up the role. He told him that he had gained a new respect for Colossus and the X-men that day and that he would willingly go to battle with Colossus without a seconds hesitation. That stuck with Fury.

It is also what Fury used to convince the reluctant Colossus to return to his home and fight for his own country just as Steve Rogers had done for his. In honor of Captain America, and out of the sheer admiration and respect that the young Peter had always had for him, he chose a costume of similar style to fit his new role.

I'm working on a more dramatic "pose" for the group. However I need help with some things.

First...Russian Avengers obviously is a shit name, so I need something that is A) Russian and B) Cool sounding.

Also any of you saucy Russian board members that want to polish up the back story or add something to it, feel free, as I know as much as an average American does about your country which is basically Rocky 4.
If you are also flush with info on how Russia and the USSR have been treated in Marvel and want to throw down, that would be awesome too.

Finally I need a new name for Colossus. Something similar to Captain America, but not too corny. So, like, Comrade Russia is out.

Anyway I hope some of you guys like this and want to lend a hand. Thanks for indulging me.

"Champion of the Russian People" might work as Colossus' codename. Maybe Hero of the Russian Federation.

By the way, when is your story set? Before Colossus was killed by... whatever it was that put him in the afterlife to greet Wolverine when the Canuck temporarily lost his healing factor and died for a short while? Or has Colossus been resurrected?

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

It's a shame this is post-USSR, because most of the best names for a Russian hero include the word 'Soviet' somewhere.

Comrade is an awesome name for a Russian-superhero. Like...The Iron Comrade. Or Comrade Steel.

By the way, you should put slits in the dress of the woman with the horned tiara, so she can run and jump, something she'll inevitably do if she's going to be fighting. (Unless she's spending most of her time in a helicopter or other vehicle, saying she's in the rear, support her teammates in the front, is no excuse and no defense against a Special Forces operator sneaking up behind her to shoot her in the back.)

The guy in the T-shirt and jeans? He might look better in a Russian Army combat uniform.

A qipao-like skirt, perhaps?

I agree that those who aren't wearing costumes should wear awesome Russian military combat uniforms and tactical gear. With lots of pouches and webbing.

Well...

1) Russia wouldn't contact America or anyone from there to form their team of superheroes.
2) Most of Russia's superheroes would steam from Soviet era, since modern Russia is at loss of ideology and thus of the heroic struggle themes... and characters.

I guess Russia would have it's own version of the Punisher.
First...Russian Avengers obviously is a shit name, so I need something that is A) Russian and B) Cool sounding.
That sounds silly indeed. I would suggest using "Russian Heroes" or "Special Unit Beta" (Russians have an "Alpha" unit in the Spetznaz, whereas "Beta" could be a shady superhero team to use where ordinary men fail).

As for Marvel treatment of Russia/USSR, it's mostly so ridiculous that I don't think it warrants any mention whatsoever

Comrade of Steel or Iron Comrade is okay. Possibly "Iron General" (Russians are fond of Generals as heroes, so if he's also a military rank that could make a cool name).

Well, so much.

As for cool names... what exactly they are? And Russian heroes should have nifty uniforms. Something Soviet mostly, since the military uniform in general doesn't change, and it's almost a certainity the heroes would be included into the military.

Well, Marvel does have the Winter Guard (most recently seen in the first issue of the new Hulk series). The Winter Guard was usually shown pretty well, at least for my tastes. They never came across as villanous; indeed, they were a superhero team.

I like your lineup, although I don't quite see Colossus in a leadership role. Don't get me wrong, he's my second favorite X-man, but I just don't see him that way. That being said, it could still work, especially given your explanation of things. He could easily mature into such a role. And the current Winter Guard IS being led by the Red Guardian, their version of Cap. There was also the Steel Guardian, as well.

And could your 'new' Crimson Dynamo be the old Titanium Man, who was, indeed, super-powered even without the armor? Of course, his only superpower was being big and strong...
I don't like being a bastard, but they leave me no choice.

Well, a quick look up on International Hero led me to find only one russian superhero who was actually created in Russia.

I always like to see what other contries have produced in regards to their own supers (and compare it to their american-concieved counterparts).

People seem to have missed that Colossus was tapped to lead this Russian team. He's totally a Commissar.

If I was Russian, I'd vote for a political party called the Progressive Political Pornography Party, if only for the shock value.

Colossus has been resurrected. The time frame is kinda floating right now until I can get the facts down. Magik, the girl with the horned tiara, transforms her costume when needed for combat. She has the whole, "I use magic and am a girl, there for I dress like a stripper" thing going.

Joseph is just a teenager that thinks costumes and such are stupid. He is a bit of a book worm. He is also powerful enough that his telekinesis protects him sub consciously.

Stas Bush
I was hoping you would see this. Nick Fury has distanced himself from being solely an American hero as of late, so it's not like they called up the White House asking for help. Also the group is supposed to be separate from the Russian military and only in the loosest sense under any influence of them. They are truly like the Avengers first were.

As far as military uniforms, I think only the Dynamo is going to come from the Russian military, so he will be the only one to use uniforms.

I thought about using Alpha or Beta, but it reminds me too much of Alpha Flight and Omega Red.

Also, something I forgot to put in the OP, is that it will eventually be revealed that Fury is actually responsible for getting the Russian government rolling on the idea and it is part of an over all plan to strengthen Earth as a whole against outside invaders. The story of him being contacted is a cover that only some of the most powerful in Russia truly know about.

The Cooler King
I've always liked the Titanium Man and wanted to keep him as he is, a mercenary. He will also make a good fight for the Dynamo as they will occasionally oppose each other. There have been 8 Crimson Dynamos, so I figure on more wouldn't hurt.

The Winter Guard, along with the Red Guardian will either be dead or out of action for a while due to the acts of the recent super villain population surge.

Civil War Man
Oooo. Commissar sounds cool.

What are the Russian words for steel, iron, chrome and metal?
Also, I'd like to avoid reference to Winter or Red, because they have been done and seem to bring about memories of the Soviet Union. This team is about the land and people of Russia, not the political party in power.

Thanks for all the input guys! :D

That works.

And 'Commissar Steel' has a nice ring to it... at least in English. I think the Russian translation for 'steel' is 'Stahl' (if my incredibly rusty Russian is of any use).

Heh. A profound... attempt to copy a structure which Russia would hardly tolerate into Russia :D Sorry, but a bunch of apparently good superheroes running without Government administration is just not how things are done in Russia, that's not what a Russian government would possibly allow.
What are the Russian words for steel, iron, chrome and metal?
Stal' ("steel", spoken as in "Stalin"), metall (self-explanatory), zhelezo (iron), hrom (chrome).
Also, I'd like to avoid reference to Winter or Red, because they have been done and seem to bring about memories of the Soviet Union.
"Winter Men" or whatever it was, a joke. That was outright ridiculous in it's depiction of Russia. But not touching the ultra-bad depiction of Russia and Russians in the US comics, "Winter" is actually a Russian thing regardless of power. You know, Russia is called "the coldest country" not for nothing :)
This team is about the land and people of Russia, not the political party in power.
Of course, else you'd have Super Putin. However, the problem is that current Russia lacks heroes and cultural identities. Noveau richies-bandits and prostitutes, as well as corrupt political hacks hardly serve a good basis for heroes.

I guess... hmm... "Mother Motherland" could be a Russian hero regardless of party affiliation. You know, you could simulate a history - like, she was an immortality experiment during the Great Patriotic War, and as a then-young woman fought the Nazis. Finding a sword in a Nazi administration cabinet, she then started using it as a preferred weapon. The "Motherland" sculpture then could be "secretly" modelled after her.

"Winter Wanderer" could be a hero of Russia - someone like a sturdy explorer of the coldest possible lands.

Common Russian persons are "Father Frost". More into Russian tales I guess. But I can't imagine how someone totally unaccustomed to Russian folklore could get anything right when it comes down to using mythical archetypes.

"Druzhina" (the army of a warlord, a "knyaz", or a unit of the army, in ancient Russia) is also a good name. That could be someone who can clone himself or anything. Dunno..

Spaceman - Russia has spacemen. "Cosmonaut" we call them.

Generally, I'd suggest forming a completely new team since the Marvel "heroes" which were created for Russia were generally too funny to watch for a Russian. The only decent book which had a re-imagined Russian (Soviet) "superhero" story was "Superman: Red Son", at least it had a half-decent treatment of Russian culture and history, the rest don't even have that.

OK. Screw this idea. I just opened my freshly shipped Incredible Hulk #1 last night and what is the first thing that happens... Abomination gets killed... Then the Winter Guard shows up. I feel very unoriginal now. :(
Thanks for all the suggestions and help anyways.
