Offhand, my favourite left wing authors: Iain Banks, Ian Watson. Must be an Ian thing.

Not sure how recent you want to get, but Ken McLeod gets quite political. His first quartet of novels' main characters start off as poli sci students at Glasgow Uni, and end up as various major players in the setting of the novels.
"So you want to live on a planet?"
"No. I think I'd find it a bit small and wierd."
"Aren't they dangerous? Don't they get hit by stuff?"

Ken McLeod and Iain Banks are evil scottish communist liberal anarchists.

I'll give you the last four, and now that you mention it, there is something demonic about Banks' beard. I think it roams the streets at night, in search of fresh victims.

Ken MacLeod I have my own problems with after reading The Cassini Division, most of them having to do with his extremely hardheaded and dislikable characters, his poor understanding of how people think, and his attitude towards genocide.

(That book is pretty much the closest thing to leftist military SF I've ever read.)

I'm not sure if it actually counts as SF, but there's Margaret Atwood's A Handmaid's Tale.

That, and Oryx and Crake is a reeking pile of horse manure if you ask me...
