Why would they do that? All three weapons seem to be the same, so they could just load up alternating types of rounds. Similar to what happens with a modern MG or have two feeds for different types. What they have is a railgun version of a light cannon afterall.

I took a look at battlestarwiki and all I can find is that they typically don't use it but they did in Scattered, I'm perfectly willing to concede that I missed it.

Could be, considering the placement, it could have a smaller or more explosive ammo load, and thus only gets used when you really need the extra firepower. I can recall times that the MkVII's have fired two or all three guns (I can't tell, looking at the Olympic Carrier scene. =P), there may be some correlation depending on what they're shooting at.

Simplicity. modern autocannons feed a mix of rounds, AP, HEDP, API/Tracer, etc on the same belt, to maintain effectiveness against a wide range of targets. The actual composition of the mix makes a difference in its effectiveness, and it simply isn't viable to have multiple feeds/multiple belts to one gun, for reliability's sake. Considering it's not seen used all the time, It seems reasonable that the third gun on MkVIII vipers may carry special purpose ammo in many loadouts, and be controlled by a button separate from the main firing trigger.

Wait -- what? I didn't realize there was a third gun on the Mk7's. Anyone have an episode/scene where we see them fire?

Off the top of my head, I think they're all seen firing in Scar when Kara's blasting away at the cylon ace.
