LOTF: Fury (review, spoilers, and what's to come next)

Link from here, since I don't want to necromance.

JME2 wrote:However, it transpires that the assassination was a feint; the purpose was to get close enough to Jacen to plan a tracker on his cloak (to counter-act his ability to mask his Force presence and track his movements).
So, they were able to find him WITHOUT the tracker, to place a tracker on a piece of clothing he might take off, so they'd be able to find him? So what are they going to do later with the aid of the tracker that they couldn't do when they PLACED the tracker?

Jesus.....
It's not that bad. They didn't really need to "find" him to place the tracker--he makes public appearances, and they had an insider who knew how he made them, and they keep a watch on Jacen's Star Destroyer. The device they placed is a short-range one--a targeting tracker. Essentially, it neutralized the fact that Jacen could use the Force to target them, but they couldn't do it to him. They later use it to target him while he's in a stealth fighter.

Why didn't they attack him outright then? Well, he does have a lot of security when he makes the appearance, and they are not suicidal.

Now, as for the novel...

Allston was always a good author. Not in the league of Zahn, Luceno, and more recently, Reaves and Perry, but his stuff is certainly above average for the EU. And his stuff is better than that of the other two LOTF authors, which is especially good for this series--Denning just takes himself too seriously, and KT... let's not go there.

I liked that it mostly used established characters, and did it well, rather than introducing one-novel wonders. The appearances of Kyle Katarn and Tycho Celchu especially pleased me, as well as the background mention of Jaden Korr (by the way, does the character have a canon gender and species?)

Alema Rar is gone. Good riddance. The less there remains from the Joiner nonsense in the Dark Nest trilogy, the better.

Centerpoint is gone. Good riddance. I voted for that thing as the stupidest EU superweapon on that thread--"it was left there by [strike]God[/strike] super-advanced ancient beings" was a really stupid plot device.

And then, in the end, Jacen chokes a bridge officer to death for something that wasn't her fault. It's not a ripoff of the Vader's scenes, but it had that authentic feel.

The novel itself was good. Probably the best one in LOTF. I should have simply put it down an enjoyed this feeling while it lasted. But then, I had to read the two teaser chapters of Revelation in the end of the book.

Now, at the end of Fury, it's pretty much set in stone that Jaina is going to fight Jacen in the end. That's one of the negative points against it--not the concept, but we're told that'll happen rather than shown. I thought it was a good thing that I couldn't see how she was going to do it--but after reading the first two chapters, I realized I should have been able to predict it, given the next book was going to be written by KT.

Jaina is going to become a Mandalorian.

I'm so darn tired of the Mandalorians. From having led a rather obscure existence in the EU, there are now Mandalorians everywhere and it seems as every storyline nowadays includes them. I'm not interested in the darn Mandalorians. I don't care about the crushergaunts and beskar armor and the bad attempt at a "language" feels more like Star Trek than Star Wars. Hopefully the Mandalorians (or the latest version of the Mandalorians) will crawl back into obscurity.

Sorry about the rant, but I'm so annoyed that the Klingon influence now has gotten to the point that it has infested a major character.

What are the EU novels selling at in terms of numbers because anyone still reading this shit is either deluded about the quality of these novels or they need their SW fix so damned bad that this is it for them. Either way these are some sad ass individuals.

Every plot summary I've read since the Vong invasion has been growing progressively more laughable as time goes on. I've read Star Trek novels for many years here and there and I don't recall horrible plot points like the ones that continually come up in the EU.

Oddly enough, if Jacen and Jaina are building up for a showdown, that means that the Yuuzhan Vong prophecy about twins is coming true for them.

I think this might have something to do with why Warhammer suddenly occupies twice as much shelf space as Star Wars at my local bookstores.

Same story in Belfast. A few weeks ago I was buying a new copy of Truce At Bakura as I'd loaned my original to a neighbour who then moved. The guy at the counter figured me for hardcore Warsie and went on the rant about how 40K was crap and only goth wannabe's liked Warhammer etc. My retort was that if a book sells it gets shelf space and since Luke humped the Emperor's personal assassin the EU has never been the same. Apparently you aren't a real fan if you aren't prepared to buy every fresh steaming pile to turd Del Rey produce.

And I thought the US and Japan were the only nations with such obsessive fans. (Insert stereotypical cry of "We're doomed!")

As for the goth thing, that's rather hypocritical coming from a hardcore Warsie, considering how many Darth Vader cosplayers there are.
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

That she'll actually put on armor, start speaking Man'doa, and buy into the Mandalorian concept of family? A speculation, although there's precedent in KT's writings for a Jedi doing that. That she'll seek out Boba Fett (who's by now Mandalore (the supreme leader of all Mandalorians) and is the epitome of all things Mandalorian) for training? Confirmed.

In the end of Sacrifice, we learn that Fett's wife may be frozen in carbonite. As soon as I read that, I could immediately see that much of Revelation would probably center on him and his grandaughter trying to find her and bring her back out. And now, it seems Jaina will join the quest.

P.S. If Jaina disguises herself as a bounty hunter to get into wherever Fett's wife is held, is caught, and is then put into a metal bikini, I don't know what I'll do with the book. Nothing good, I promise.

Now, as I understand, Jaina Solo is a Jedi Knight. By this point, she must be a mature Jedi. So why the hell does she need training from an 80-year-old ex-bounty hunter? Is there any in-universe reason?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Why in the name of good fuck would a Jedi need to learn anything from a bounty hunter, Jaina is in her 30's by this time IIRC. As a teenager she and her brothers had been doing things like running an astroid belt in a ship with no shields and taking out Vong Fighters before SW tech equalled the battlefield. A fully trained Jedi, as Jaina is, should be able to do freaky shit that would make Bobo the mandalorian's helmet pop off in frustration. Fucking garbage.

Bolded part is so sig-worthy.

The great disparity in the three authors' quality (Allston is good, Denning is mediocre, and KT sucks) proves they should never have done a collaborative project. Had it been Allston and Denning alone, it would have been on the order of the NJO series--OK overall, with a few gems and a few pieces of shit. KT dragged everything down, primarily by making the Mandalorians and Fett so important.

The argument provided for Jaina needing to go to Fett is something like this: Jacen knows everything Jaina does about being a Jedi, so if she is just a Jedi, she'll lose. Fett is an expert anti-Jedi (huh?), and will teach Jaina unorthodox tactics that Jacen doesn't know, so she can surprise him. Jacen tortured and killed Fett's daughter, so he'll agree to help Jaina to become something other than a Jedi. What can he help her become? Well, he is a Mandalorian...

It's crap, all right. At least (I hope) Fett won't be the one that kills Jacen.

Yeah, those unorthodox mandalorian tactics really helped Jango against Mace...oh yeah...that's right, Mace pwned him without breaking a sweat. Well, maybe Fett learned from his dad's errors and did really good against a Jedi...Battle at the Sarlaac pit has him up against Luke, a relatively untrained Jedi who proceeded to treat him as more of an annoyance and let's not forget how well Fett fared against a blind disoriented smuggler in that same battle.

The EU has been partly hijacked by a Mandalorian fanwhore. It reads like a Mado wanking fanfic, how sad.
