Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised that the Pats' O-line actually got called for holding a few times. This not only stopped blatant cheating, but the holds themselves pissed off Strahan & Co. and got them riled enough to make the QB pay.

And I loved the double-DB blitz where they sent two DBs in tandem shooting through the same gap. The running back with blitz pickup duties got the first one, but the second one...

I haven't seen that one since Tom Landry and his 4-0 defense. Brilliant stuff.

BTW, just how much arrogance did it take for the Pats to go for it on a long 4th down, when they're playing in an indoor stadium with no wind and therefore perfect conditions for a FG attempt? Are they really that confident in their own abilities? Or have I already forgotten something important about that play? I must admit that I don't understand how some people memorize all the details of major plays in football games, so they can recite them afterwards. My memory of the game is largely a blur, punctuated by a few memorable plays.

I didn't understand why they didn't take the field goal either. The only thing I can think of is that if the kick went no good, a distinct possibility at that range even under optimal conditions, New York would have had a field 7 yards closer to the end zone.

Well, I'm glad I didn't have any bets riding on the game. Not that I ever place bets, especially on sports, but I was pretty confident the Patriots would take it.

Wow that truly was a great game to watch. I never really thought it would be such a low-scoring affair. That guy Tuck was a wrecking crew on defense too. I applaud the Giants for being the enemy of my enemy and making them pay :P

And maybe its just me and my anti-Belicheck mindset, but did anyone else think it was a bitch move to pull that 12 men on the field challenge? I didn't even know you could DO that shit.

Qwerty sums it up pretty well, but keep in mind that going up 14-3 ( a lead of two scores) could have been a knockout punch. It's been New England's M.O. all year long to go balls out to jump to a lead early. The other team either panics and abandons the run or had no chance to begin with. Either way the game usually ends in a rout. The thing that screwed up the Pats this time was the play of the Giants' defensive line. In every other game, save the AFC championship, there was little or no pressure on the QB. Two weeks ago the Chargers forced three picks by getting pressure on Brady and probably would have won the game were it not for the fact that their three best offensive players were either too injured to play well or in Tomlinson's case, too injured to play at all. The Giants' only missing offensive player was TE Jeremy Shockey and IMO the G-Men are better off without him anyway because he's more trouble than he's worth.

So when the Giants held the Patriots' offense in check (with sacks and knockdowns instead of interceptions), their offense scored TDs instead of settling for field goals.

Yeah, if they had that little faith in their kicker they shoulda just punted it and tried and pinned the Giants within the 20, 10 or 5.

Man, if the camera had panned into the announcer's booth right after New England's go ahead touchdown I bet you would have Joe Buck putting on the chapstick getting ready to verbally fellate Tom Brady. Is there anyone WORSE to put in the booth for a Super Bowl? At least Aikman said only one dumb thing on the night, and it was only dumb because it was blatantly obviously (That the Giants should go for it instead of punting on 4th and 1 with 1:40 to go in the game.)

Say what you want about Eli, I know I still will, but the guy stepped up with one of the most clutch drives in Super Bowl history. Of course if he had lost we would be talking about his head being firmly embedded in his ass on the previous drive.

Predictions for ESPN coverage (a.k.a New england Fan reactions) tomorrow:

-"But Brady was HURRRRRRRRT!"

-"You have to admire their (New England's) guts to go for it 4th and long!"

-"I don't blame Belichek whatsoever. He's a classy guy."

-"Something something something Peyton something something something Archie something something Manning..."

But honestly, i'd LOVE to hear from Tiki Barber on this. Someone should interview him and ask him how the crow tastes.

Rebecca asked WTF happened when that challenge was made. I explained it to her, and she just looked at me and said "you can actually do that? That's the cheapest thing I ever saw!"

That was one of her three exclamations of the game. The other two were:

"Look at the fat people running!" (she was giggling while looking at the audience members running to the stage for Tom Petty's half-time show, many of whom were carrying a few extra pounds and looked a bit comical trying to sprint)

"Go Eli!" during his highlight-reel Great Escape throw, followed by the Impossible Catch.

Being a New England fan, I wanted to say a few things so you could get the perspective of a hometown fan.

- It was fucking dumb of the Patriots to go for it on 4th and long. Clearly a field goal would have made all the difference in the world for the Pats.

- I blame Belichick for that call, and therefore losing the game. I don't mean to take anything away from the Giants. Eli put together an excellent drive with two odd minutes left, escaping the sack and throwing the helmet pass being the most obvious example of his poise under pressure. Their defense was excellent throughout as well. In no way do I think that OT would have been an automatic win for the Pats, but its clearly a better outcome for them than an outright loss in regulation.

- Belichick's challenge was legitimate since a rule was broken that would give the Patriots a first down had the officials caught it. Did the rule infraction affect the game in any way? No, but it still makes sense to challenge because you should absolutely do whatever it takes to win within the rules of the game. (Since winning is the point of professional sporting competitions.)

- The Giants played better and won the game, deservedly so. I expected a close game and thankfully got one. Blowouts are fucking boring.

I'd write more but I'm no football expert and I'm afraid the tears will fry my keyboard.

Karma is a fucking bitch isn't it?*
New England Patriots [team stats] fans are smarter, classier and healthier and own pricier homes than the riff-raff who root for the New York Giants - and now we’ve got the research to back it up.

Some 62 percent of Pats fans living in the Boston area earned a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree or have some higher-education experience, compared to 59 percent of Giants fans, according to the latest marketing data provided by the Nielsen Co., the TV ratings firm.

Likewise, 72 percent of Pats fans live in homes worth north of $200,000, compared to 63 percent of Giants yahoos, the Nielsen data show.

That’s just for starters.

Pats fans consistently show better taste than their Gotham counterparts, according to Nielsen.

We drink Amstel Light, not Bud Light. Giants fans slug back lots of whiskey.

We are likely to read connoisseur magazines like Wine Spectator. Gotham fans like to pig out on junk food like pretzels, chips and nuts. They’re also less likely to favor organic food than other New Yorkers.

Giants tailgaters are conspicuous consumers who party off the backs of Land Rovers and showy BMW SUVs. Pats fans are more likely to tailgate off the back of an understated Lexus or a sturdy Volvo SUV.

When Pats revelers aren’t watching football, they’re hitting the slopes skiing or going for a sail. They’re also more likely to belong to country clubs.

When Giants fans aren’t booing Giants coach Tom Coughlin or punk quarterback Eli Manning in that New Jersey stadium they call home, they’re out practicing their tennis backhands in the backyard.

None of these marketing revelations came as a surprise to Mike Schuster, 45, who lives in the shadow of Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.

“Boston fans are much classier,” said Schuster, a real estate agent and software consultant who is heading out to Arizona for the Super Bowl. “Have you ever been to Yankee stadium? I mean, they boo their own players.”

“Bostonians, in general, are better educated,” Schuster added. “New Yorkers have to send their kids to Boston to educate them.”

It’s also worth noting that the Patriots are an equal opportunity franchise, drawing more female fans than the competition. Nearly half of all Pats backers - about 43 percent - are women. In Giants country, just 31 percent of the fans are female.

Pats fans are also more Web savvy, some 63 percent have broadband Internet connection.

Of course, though we may hate to admit it, fans on both sides of the turf do have some similarities. The Nielsen data indicate that Pats and Giants fans are both likely to live in “affluent” suburbs or rural neighborhoods. They both buy “above average” amounts of beer, too, and they like to garden.
I wonder if Jessica Heslam is going to issue a secondary piece entitled, "Well fuck I didn't see that one coming, I guess I was too busy acting superior to realize it." That kind of snobbery does not belong in Football.

Here's a video from NFL.com with the Tyree catch.

You can almost hear Joe Buck die a little inside.

While I actively hate the Giants with my heart and soul, I also have to share a room with a rabid NE sports fan and a campus with about 2,000 of them. So in the spirit of schadenfreude I am gleefully happy to see Tom Brady get stapled to the ground again and again and again and the classless assholes in the Patriots organization thrown to the wolves.

My only quibble is that awarding Eli Manning the MVP Trophy is a crock. He stepped up and for about five minutes in the fourth quarter was actually an NFL quarterback but the rest of the game he played terribly. This was clearly the defense's victory.

Also, this game is boring me so far.

Nice line, Surlethe.

Anyway boring half-time show, boring game (with only two "oh shit" moments)

What else is on tonight?
I know I said this before but the 4th quarter made up for all of it.

Alicia Keys so did not do the opening, or at least not any opening I saw. Wasn't the anthemn anyway, that was some American Idol chick (who was from Arizona and the daughter of a former Giants player, IIRC...symbolism ftw?).

Anyway, aside from me generally rooting for the Patriots (my family's up there so it was sorta default...had it not been them and someone else I'd probably have flipped a coin) and the Giants being from Jersey, despite the name (lol Jersey sucks! :P ) I have to give it to them: their defense beat the ever-loving shit out of the Pats. And they really went balls out it seemed, as quite a few of their players seemed to have trouble making it through (I don't know if the same happened to Pats players, the camera never showed it). So good on them.

And yes, that escape the sack, throw it way the fuck downfield, and barely catch it play was awesome and quite amazing to watch. I don't care who you rooted for. :)

Incidently, I'm in the camp that they (Pats) should have gone for the FG rather than run it on that 4th down. That could well have made a big difference if it went into OT. Who would've won? I have no idea. But it would've been fun to watch. :)

Another few things:

Damn that was a fast 1st quarter.

The Budweiser ads, as usual, beat the shit out of all comers. I loved the Rocky thing with the Clydesdale.

That GoDaddy.com "too hot for TV" ad was so retarded. Granted I doubted they'd actually have her strip, but the "rejected by FOX" one was lame. The other ones they had on the site were much better.

EDIT: Oh, and Super Bowl XLIII is apparently coming to Tampa. Um, yay? Here's hoping the Bucs get some home field advantage next year!

Eli getting MVP was bullshit given his half assed performance. The Giants defense made that game and they delivered more. Only in the fourth quarter did Eli look like he belonged there.

Pats losing warms my heart given because they played like retards and lost.

Tom Petty looked like he was only kinda there.

The Termie ads I can see. It is their network, after all. I liked the fight between the NFL bot and the Termie though.

I forgot about the Bridgestone ads. Those were great. Especially when he sped up to run over Richard Simmons. Too bad he swerved at the last second.

EDIT: Typo

As to the Internet ones, you mean that sales genie or whatever it was? Yeah, those were epic fail. My sister wondered if it wasn't just some money laundering scheme, the first to be advertised during the Super Bowl. Wouldn't surprise me.

The fight between the bots I enjoyed. The commericals were both boring, and sadly hilarious when I told my buds what the first episode and premise were. The looks on their faces made up for most of the constant barrage.

Now that I've calmed down after the fucking celebratory craziness last night let me add that this had to be one of the best SuperBowls in recent memory and I'm not saying that as a Giants fan. If the Giants lost I still would have said that. I cannot remember the last time a SuperBowl had me on the edge of my seat (literally) like this one did. Every fucking play in that 4th quarter my gut tightened and I prayed for a good turn out. Every sack of Brady had me dance up out of my seat - especially that monster fucking rocket hit that leveled his ass. Every blown opportunity by the Giants had me shouting in dismay.

A lot of dumb ass Pats fans were predicting a blow out here in the office and I shall shortly begin my rounds as I make a grand tour of "Hahahahaha" but seriously, how can you as a football fan who is objectively watching this game, especially in the playoffs think for a second that your team is going to blow out the Giants?

The last time the Pats matched up the game was only lost by 3 points and now when the Giants are surging and Eli Manning is showing he found some kind of rhythm you really fucking think you're going to blow that team out? I certainly never thought for a second the Giants would blow out the Pats. This was destined to be a close game decided by Defense. Anyone that's been fucking watching these teams and in particular the playoffs should have known that. So an extra very special fuck you to those arrogant Pats fans. I ran into plenty of rational Giants fans but just about every Pats fan going into this was a douche. Wow. Who would have thought, just like their team and their cock goblin of a coach. What sweetness it was to see Belochek unable to fucking speak. Good for you cocksucker.

Anyone catch the clip of the Pats fan literally balling his heart out at the loss? Remember Cartman licking the tears? Oh yes, it was that good.

And another thing, I , for one, am NOT a fan of this 18-1 nonsense. That defines the Giants victory with the Pats record and I say fuck that. The better team won and who gives a shit about this undefeated nonsense, give the Giants their due they certainly never got any respect all season and throughout the playoffs. This Superbowl should be defined by the fact that it was a Giant VICTORY not a Patriot's defeat.

On a personal note my Dad got to watch this on my 50 inch hi-def LCD TV. He was needless to say in heaven. At home he's only been able to see it on his 20 inch screen all these years. it warmed my heart that it could be seen on a Giants win in the Superbowl.
Wherever you go, there you are.

This for sure was one of the best SB in a while.

I understand the people that say it sucked or that it was boring, because those people want to tune in and see a score fest and probably don't understand the individual plays as much, but that is cool.

That 4 and 13 would have been a big deal if the Patriots would have lost by 2 or 1, but since they lost by three and were up by 4, it is not going to be remembered as a bad call, especially by this team which has gone for it on 4th and long all season.

As for the Patriots getting "screwed" by the refs, which I am already starting to hear, there are only TWO plays in which this might have been the case... The fumble by Bradshaw, should have been called NE ball, however there was no ref in the vicinity to call it, so the Giants got lucky that Bradshaw had the strength and the sack to get it back from the defense before a ref could get over there. The other play was the no call on the blow to the head on TB in the end zone. I hate that fucking rule, but the way it has been called the last couple of years, that should have been a 15 yarder.

THAT being said... KUDOS to the officiating crew for letting the players determine the outcome of this game. (They easily could have blown the play dead when Manning got all Houdini, as I have seen them do before)
And double KUDOS to the head Ref, who's name is totally escaping me, for being the 1st black head ref in a SB, and doing an OUTSTANDING job.

The Giants won that game. Let me repeat that. The Giants WON that game. The Patriots did not loose it.
The D-line for the Giants played better than any other unit has all season against anybody. This was even a better performance than they had against the Eagles when they had 12 sacks, because the O-line of NE might be the best in the league. They were getting pressure with 4 almost the whole game, allowing all the coverage they needed against Welker and Moss. Stallworth wasn't even a factor...did he even play? They also shut down the running game.
And after the only turnover the Giants had, the D promptly when out and got a 3 and out. BADASS JOB Giant D.

On the flip side, the O-line of NY was just good enough to keep Eli unrattled. Steve Smith, out of USC, had a FANTASTIC game, and more than made up for the INT he caused. Tyree, who made probably the best catch in SB history against 1st ballot HOFer, Rodney Harrison, also played an awesome game. Plaxico Burress has done what he has done all year, not practice because of two bum legs and come out and be a major factor. The rookie TE that replaced Shockey, who may have just become expendable, also had an outstanding game, receiving AS WELL as blocking.

That leaves Eli. Charger fans are gonna hate him even more now, even if he has garnered a little more respect from them. But you have to give it to him, he didn't change his ways, even in the relentless face of the NY media and fan base. He has certainly emerged from being just Payton's brother, just as Payton talked about in that commercial when he said he went beyond just being Archie's boy.
But that one play, man, that one play. That just took Eli to a whole other level.

What I like the most about this win however, is that it was a true team win, but not just in this game. Look back at the last two years of the Giants and you will see a team that was about to fall apart. The coaches and players hated each other. The players weren't getting along with each other. So what did they do? They god damned compromised. The coaches softened a little, the players hardened a little and they changed the whole culture and atmosphere of their team. They made themselves into SB champs, and not buy going out and buying high priced help, but with taking what they had and working their asses off. That you just have to love.

Tom Petty is no Prince.

What was with that one fat girl jamming to the stage?!?! I think Mike said he noticed her too. Some one at my party said she must really like Tom Petty, I then said, "No. Someone probably just left food on the stage."

The commercials sucked this year. I didn't see one that got more than a chuckle out of anyone I was watching with. Even the cute ones were "meh". The Terminator fighting the Super Bowl bot was the best bit of advertising by far.
Oh wait... The Coca-Cola commercial with the blimps of Stewie, Underdog and Charlie Brown was GREAT.

Peyton Manning sitting all alone in his little corner was great. We were talking about what it would be like watching the game with him... what are you gonna say? You certainly wouldn't try to talk "shop" with him. "Man Eli should have thrown that to-" "Look idiot. There were two rushers coming in from his blind side and they were in a cover 3 over the top with a safety trailing his primary. The mike had his secondary covered and his third read ran the wrong route. So shut the fuck up."

And GR, yeah Eli didn't deserve the MVP, but A) You can't give it to 6 guys (The D-line) and B) That last drive was just fucking awesome, which is why he won it. I was throwing my vote in for Steve Smith for most of the game actually.

One other thing, about the magnitude of this win... This will go down as the biggest upset in SB history. Not because of the point spread (The spread against Namath and the Jets was bigger), not because of the 4 road wins (The patriots did that in 2001, and the Steelers a couple of years ago), but because of what they stopped. An 18 game winning streak, including an undefeated regular season. A fourth SB win in 7 years by the current NFL dynasty. Keeping Brady out of the same breath as Montana and Bradshaw. And at the same time as all that creating their own record with 11 straight road wins.

EDIT: I would have paid money, to have video feed into a couple of NE bars just to see the faces and hear the silence at the end of the game.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.
Hit it.

God damn it, I should have bet on this game. I was saying "Giants to cover and take the under" on Friday and everyone was laughing at me.

Any city gets what it admires, will pay for, and, ultimately, deserves…We want and deserve tin-can architecture in a tinhorn culture. And we will probably be judged not by the monuments we build but by those we have destroyed.--Ada Louise Huxtable, "Farewell to Penn Station", New York Times editorial, 30 October 1963
