My TV guide claims Gwen's boyfriend joins the team, whether this is a permanant thing or not I don't know. But hell, he can't make them any worse.

They should eat him. No, really. I'd watch and be entertained if they did.

Personally, I thought he was by far the most competant person on the short bus today. Of course, this isn't saying much.

I had an amusing fantasy about UNIT in the same situation. It involved a platoon of soldiers and a Valiant type aircraft carrier.

It's always helpless aliens in this, too. I want to see a judoon or a cyberman wash up some time, and for them to have to confront the fact that they can't do jack about it but accede to whatever demand it makes.

Who did kick all their asses, even though she was an unarmoured, low rent cybusman. Now just imagine what one of those 80s ones would do to them. Or one from The Invasion.

Torchwood's survival seems to entirely count on the aliens that come through the rift being armed only with teeth and claws, or otherwise helpless.

I remember the great time we were having before we knew that the Cybermen were not actually the Cybermen. I would love to actually see such a thing happen.

"We are Torchwood."

"IRRELEVENT."

An Earthshock one, I think you mean. The ones in Attack of the Cybermen could be destroyed by a well-placed gunshot, and you could kill the Silver Nemesis ones by throwing gold coins at them!

Yesterday's episode was pretty decent, I thought. They managed to avoid the easy way out by not making Rhys forget about everything, though it'll probably never get mentioned again.

Indeed an Earthshock Cyberman could reasonably take on an entire guard of the human race's equivalent of the time, and they seemed to be reasonably competent.

They were still highly allergic to gold - the Doctor killed one with Adric's star pin ... although he did it by grappling with the Cybernetic monster and gringing the gold into the respirator, as it's supposed to be.

You know, I'm reminded of Tomb of the Cybermen, with the remarkably scientifically accurate x-ray laser in it. Doctor Who needs more x-ray lasers.

Unless Jack just happens to know about the wars against the cybermen (not terribly unreasonable), who were reduced to 'a race of gold plated hat stands' two thousand years before his native time, I don't see how that would help. The chumps aren't going to somehow discover that the cybermen are allergic to gold. And even then, how much gold do they have hanging around. They're not the Eighth Doctor, they don't seem to have big bags of gold dust just on the off-chance they run into cybermen. So, while they're trying to kill it with gold, what's the cyberman likely to be doing?

Hell, I'm pretty sure a cybermat could dominate the Torchwood shortbus for at least an episode.

Well, that's the trouble when you're discussing Torchwood, isn't it? By any logic, even a Nemesis Cyberman should kick the team's asses (they'd probably still be able to deal with an Attack one). If it were an actual Torchwood episode though, Jack would probably just grab some gold-plated cutlery from whatever equivalent of Harrods is in Cardiff, then lob them into the Cyberman's chest, ninja style.

I don't get why everyone's so shocked about aliens in this episode. This is the same continuity as Doctor Who yes? Where everyone's seen aliens Christmas after Christmas?

I take it you haven't seen the three-part finale to season three. The Master mocking POTUS was hilarious, even if the final episode was full of deus ex machina and Doctor arrogance again.

Like they forgot the Kennedy assassination? Or the Lincoln assassination? Only this time the Prime Minister (who mysteriously disappeared moments later, having butchered his own cabinet) was actually on worldwide television saying It's aliens folks. Look at the aliens. Then a flying alien shot the president in the face on worldwide live television, with a gun that blasted him to ashes.

Surely that must be sarcasm?

While everyone should probably be living as normal, the idea of anyone rejecting the idea of aliens in Torchwood is just stupid (not that the stupid aren't everywhere, mind) now. UNIT should be a big public agency too, now.

Not sarcasm, sir. I is totally honest.

I mean, the in-universe explanation essentially is "Oh, I didn't really notice/care". There's plenty of times the Doctor has pointed out these things from the ship smacking into Big Ben to the Sycorax being vaped and "snowing" on London and the Christmas Star. The events on Valiant are likely just as obscure now, as will be the ship nearly hitting Buck house.

Humans simply are that dumb in the Whoverse, bar the companions, it seems.

Which is a sign of shitty writing, and should be done away with immediately, and replaced with better.

Not care, on the other hand, is fine. And while actually seeing an alien is still likely to be a shock, it would be nice to see some reference made to this shit more often in Torchwood.
