Yes, it was; judging from the couple of frames it was on-screen, it was moving pretty fast, but nothing like what a real tank shell travels at.Vympel wrote:The shell was visible though, wasn't it? I don't know what that (at first glance, a bodgy old T-72M/T-72M1) tank was firing, but it certainly wasn't a 125mm APFSDS.The shell would've been invisible, especially since the muzzle velocity of most modern 120 mm smoothbores firing APFSDS rounds is in the klicks/second rate. I surmise that the suit noticed the tanks was taking aim and loaded, and carried out the quickest possible countermeasure without the user really knowing.

Looking at the trailer in 1080p, it actually looks like some sort of made-up variant of an M1.

The suit gains a great deal of its strength from the repulsors, right? As in there is a sort of field around it that keeps it from crumpling like a tin can when something actually hits, right? If so, then perhaps the best way of interpretting the tank shell scene would be that the suit detected the shell and then threw out the field to slow it down to a velocity that was dodge-able, since it obviously couldn't stop it dead. This might also explain why Iron Man went with the rocket launcher, in that his suit had just drained a great deal of energy with such a move and needed to recharge the capacitors or such, thus the rocket.

More plausible, but...I don't think that's what the clip is trying to show. He seems to blow up the tank almost dismissively, like it isn't any threat.Academia Nut wrote:The suit gains a great deal of its strength from the repulsors, right? Why did they ditch the Black Sabbath Iron Man song from previous trailers? I do hope it's in the film.

I get the feeling that he thinks it's bad CGI if it's not COMPLETELY photorealistic. If I'm wrong, I would like to see if he can name a film that has good CGI.

A song like that would probably be used in the credits or something, though I agree that they should break out of the mold and actually use it in the film. That would be badass.Darth Wong wrote:Why did they ditch the Black Sabbath Iron Man song from previous trailers? I do hope it's in the film.

I thought it was about someone who used to be idealistic but that everyone picked on so he turned into an asshole.
And good CGI is the kind you don't notice. Bad CGI is usually marked by things moving in impossible ways, such as a guy in a big metal suit moving nothing like what a guy in a big metal suit should move like, even if it's full of servomotors and repulsors.

So then there was no possible way that Iron Man, or Transformers, or Spider-Man, or anything involving fantastic events could have "good" CGI?

If the unrealisticness is purely from the fantastic aspects of the movie it's fine, but when it's still all wrong even taking those elements into account it's shit.

Ah I gotcha. So even if it looks nice, if the "physics engine" blows, then it gets negative points. Nothing wrong with that I suppose.

If it was just some director, I would say they dropped it and just used it for the trailer, but as this is Jon Favreau, and he is cool and, IIRC, a fan boy, it will probably be in the movie. Running it in the teaser and the SB spot might have just got it a little too worn out so they went with something that has a similar vibe and feel.Darth Wong wrote:Why did they ditch the Black Sabbath Iron Man song from previous trailers? The lyrics don't really give up much of a story, but I've always thought that it was indeed about a time traveler that during his journey, became a monster or "Iron Man" ("He was turned to steel In the great magnetic field") and the world he was trying to save turned on him because of it. So he started biting the heads off birds and pissing on the Alamo.

Hmm. Not sure of the validity of this as the quote from Geezer is uncited, and the FAQ isn't from anyone official. So take it with a grain of salt.

There's a scene a few seconds earlier where he's coming under fire from a machine gun of sorts and his arm is jumping around blocking bullets like crazy protecting his exposed head so at the least the suit has some directive (and capacity) to protect him without his direct input.Publius wrote: If the explanation is some sort of automated evasive mechanism, then ideally it would have been triggered by the tank preparing to fire rather than it actually firing. At best, the "man-portable Aegis" idea is lipstick on a pig -- as you said, it doesn't really seem workable at the range and time frame seen in the trailer.

Speaking of music in comic book films, I thought Linkin Park in Transformers was pretty awesome, even if it was just the end credits.

What's hilarious to me is that immediately following these Civil War and World War Hulk arcs, the movie Iron Man gets released to the tune of a song about a former hero who becomes a sociopath and "kills the people he once saved."Molyneux wrote:...except that the song "Iron Man" is about someone who travels back in time and is slowly transmuting into metal, isn't it?18-Till-I-Die wrote:Agreed.
