Primeval Ep. 2x05 [Spoilers]
I have a good feeling about this one based on the synopsis. Hopefully it goes somewhere. Least last week they finally saw the monsters as DANGEROUS and not "LOLZ! Moar craeture f0lly!!1".

Indeed. I keep thinking of him from Green Wing still, heh.
And loved the kid Taylor. Too bad they had a couple of filler episodes before getting back on form with this one, I wanted more giant scorpion action though.
The anomaly appearing again was fortuitous, but I can only assume they do that a lot, else Helen wouldn't be moving in and out of timelines like that, so they must be linked to our time for some reason. The punching of the Neanderthal actor was hilarious (and I did kind've expect it'd be some misleading thing to show them as being in another past timeline).
Next week looks like a charlie-foxtrot involving multiple anomalies. And the Future Predator again.

The killer seals and future shark episode was better than that sabre tooth one, but this is certainly the best episode of the season yet, with genuinely scary and dangerous animals that stopped the main characters from crassly larking about. It felt rather RTD in tone, with the council flat (often used in Spooks), likable working class girl, references to reality television, and single parent. But it felt more SG-1 in tone as well, with the desert (I wonder where they filmed it?).

On that note, is Conner's reaction to anything going wrong still 'give me a gun. The biggest one available'?

You think they'd have researchers and technicians that aren't Cutter and Connor, too. Apparently not.Big Orange wrote:You'd thought the well equipped ARC compound, with their own armoury loaded up with military tactical gear, would already have various camera gadgets that can sent ahead into dangerous areas.

Well they're not as bad as S1 Torchwood Three, while the snarky Lester said that Connor sucked balls in his face, and disliked Professor Cutter, seeing the rest of the gang as useful idiots that are expendable to the Home Office/Arc (I thought Ben Miller was rather underused in this season, but at least he is handy with a machine gun in possibly the last episode of this run).Stark wrote: You think they'd have researchers and technicians that aren't Cutter and Connor, too. Next ep is not the last in the season. There's 7 eps this season (to bring 1&2 to 13, making it more marketable abroad). Supposedly season 3 is already confirmed. The writers have supposedly said that their story is something they've had planned as a three season affair, like a trilogy, but that the universe could potentially be further explored in other areas.
This coming episode is written by Paul Cornell, of Doctor Who writing fame.

That's good to hear, for I feared one episode was a little lacking in tying up what's happening in season two. I do recall them mentioning season three after the episode finished, so they're either working on it now or will start shooting soon. Least they have the overarching plot worked out and aren't winging it.

Or the Season 2 Torchwood 3. What with it still having the same basic setup of 'five guys in the sewers defending the Earth'Big Orange wrote:Well they're not as bad as S1 Torchwood Three,
As for the mini-MALP, I'm not sure if a normal drone would be that helpful. For a start, it's basically got to fit in the boot of a car - they don't have a convinient fixed stargate - and not be too conspicuous. Second, I can't recall how easily or not the Anomolies allow radio signals through.
IIRC, this is the first time we've actually seen the team in season 2 actually go through an Anomoly. Thus we've had no reason to see them use the mini-MALP before. Usually their objective is to just tranq the beasties and toss them through.

That, and there's a lot of likely hostile beasties on the other end that would take out the mini-MALP anyway, which could get tedious. Since they're simply securing the area until the anomalies dissipate, they have no need to venture in. It's not like they don't know where they lead to, it's who or what is causing them that is the main issue.

A quick investigation on wiki confirms that season 3 is, apparently, a full 13 episode affair.Admiral Valdemar wrote:That's good to hear, for I feared one episode was a little lacking in tying up what's happening in season two. My issue with the Primeval thing is mainly that they have a HUGE base, full of soldiers and scientists, and apparently don't ever use them. I can understand that the show needs to be about a few individual characters but when you have those resources explicit in the show it seems daft that they're never utilised. They should at least be forming some kind of perimeter around some of these anomaly sites so the Scooby gang is not so laughably out of it's depth.
...and last ep, with the Mer, the site of a permanent intermittent future anomaly should be a boon for their researchers. Secure the place, and investigate, a future anomaly should be a perfect "safe" place to test the thing. Instead they took the imaginative approach to fill it with concrete.

But they have. Repeatedly. Just because you don't see it all the time doesn't mean it never happens, as in the case of this week, they didn't have the time and it was simply more discrete to send the main team.Lord Woodlouse wrote:

Indeed. The only thing they really need to worry about is stopping critters coming through.Admiral Valdemar wrote:That, and there's a lot of likely hostile beasties on the other end that would take out the mini-MALP anyway, which could get tedious. Sometimes they're there, sometimes they ain't. Nearly every time they would be exceptionally useful. Even if not to form a perimeter, at least some extra feet on the ground to help the main team (arm them with tranquillisers if need-be, the idea that an idiot student like Conner should be tasked with some of these roles sometimes without any escort just seems daft).Admiral Valdemar wrote:But they have. It should be a matter of procedure to send more than just the main team to every confirmed anomaly.
The future seal people things, apparently they're called "Mer". As in mer people."Mer"?
In other news, there's a big rumour around that episode one of season three will feature a serious reference to Torchwood as a real organisation.

I'd far rather they try and get David Tennant to mooch past in costume, look at anomoly, go 'ah' and walk off.Lord Woodlouse wrote:In other news, there's a big rumour around that episode one of season three will feature a serious reference to Torchwood as a real organisation.

Well this episode was certainly a return to form after the lame last few. It's just a shame that they've taken a 'everyone is completely retarded' leaf out of Torchwood's book. Steven isn't a fiercely independent, dynamic guy anymore: he's Cutter's jilted boyfriend and a credulous moron. WAH NICK DOESN'T LOVE ME WAH.
