When I went past (late morning) there were a few people spilling out into the street, but the main problem was people in front of me slowing down to read all the signs,. Race St. isn't very big and I couldn't really pass them. So if you can get the permits I'd pick a more arterial road next time, like Broad Street or the circle in front of City Hall. Race St. already has congestion problems thank to that fucking parking garage at the beginning of Chinatown narrowing the road.
That's true to some extent, and I apologize for the inconvience. That said most of any traffic snarl I saw (mind you I was at the beginning of the pack, so I might have missed something) was as a result of a small parking lot directly behind us.
I will suggest that should another protest come up (and if we have time to get permits neccessary for such a thing).

Also, I'm pretty sure I saw a guy with a Mumia sign in the back of the pack.
Really? That fucker. I think I know exactly who you're talking about.

"Free Mumia" people are like lampreys who latch onto any form of ongoing protest regardless of content. I've seen them attached to antiwar and free-trade protests here in Washington D.C.

If the Mongols couldn't destroy Islam by the sword then it's pretty certain that it's not really a practicable solution. As Valdemar said, the only feasible way to destroy organized religion is by gradually neutralizing its ideological basis, using education and culture over generations to progressively reduce the prevalence of magical thinking. Church attendance in Europe continues to decline by these methods.
In any case, attacking the Church of Scientology represents an opportunity to impede and otherwise damage a rather insidious religious movement in its infancy.

Bingo, Pablo. The best weapons against dangerous cults and myths are science, knowledge, information-spreading and education, and last but not least, humor in the form of merciless mockery!

many of the anon have been bitching about that on 4chan. many want anon to go after Christianity next, and half of the 4chan /b/tards hate this protest in general, calling it being nice when that isn't what /b/ is about

I actually went to observe, medium to small size group, but they appeared to handle themselves well. Of course, it's Sac, most people will be going to SF or Berkly to protest.
As far as protests go, 8000 people worldwide is pretty pathetic.

I hear 4chan is new to this protesting business. It's called a "march". Of course, when you're just ten people, I guess "walking around" would be a more appropriate term

It's also fucking useless. Anyone who thinks this is actually going to hurt the cause of Scientology is a blithering idiot. It's nothing more than an exercise in this "anonymous" group trying to wank its own importance and morality, by carefully picking a "safe" target (a religious group which won't be able to hurt them in return) and then putting on these protests which accomplish absolutely nothing other than to make the members of the group feel important.

Uh....a decent portion of Anonymous did not want to conduct this campaign in the first place due to the whole 'morality' thing ("what /b/ is and isn't"). Some Anonymous wanted to counter-protest the Anonymous protesters against Scientology. And the protests were to raise awareness as well..
Also, if this letter is true then Anonymous might have won:

How the hell does that letter of advice mean that they won and dealt a serious blow to Scientology?
I meant that they are 'on the way to winning' (what the letter said) and the higher-ups in the church are confused and shat their pants at thousands of people protesting and hacking their shit out of nowhere and 2 million people seeing that anonymous video on youtube in 2 days.
Any organization would be asking a lot of questions if they just got hacked and protested. It doesn't mean the organization has become seriously weakened, or that its long term prospects are significantly damaged.

Which can be good as well. The more holed up they get, the more they look like Heaven's Gate in the public eye. Good luck getting recruits then.
And the more large religions will look like they're "normal" or "sane" to Joe Average, thus reinforcing the status quo. I don't agree at all that going after Scientology is some kind of first step towards making the public see that all religions are bunk, especially not with 4chan leading the charge, whose dismissive centrist horseshit attitude towards atheists is something I've had to deal with and personally find more irritating than the fundiest of fundies. All this is going to do is widen the chasm between "crackpot" and "sensible" religions in the public eye, not help them see that they're all cut from the same cloth.
Here's an awesome vid of what happened on Sunday in Deansgate:link. Much better than those other crappy ones! Anyway, an asston of people asked Anon what they were protesting for, lots of easy to understand anti-church literature was disseminated and it was generally amusing. I think that's the main moral of the story.

Let's all be honest: the U.S. government blew their chance to dismantle the CoS as a criminal organization for its crimes in the '70's and '80's when they were investigating but did not prosecute - and we all know that that had to have something to do with the the fact that they were afraid of creating hate-speech and exploitation-of-membership precedent that could be used against fundie Christians. I am convinced that's why the CoS has been so much more successful at crying about religious intolerance and draping themselves in persecution in the U.S. than Europe and elsewhere.
